I have been feeling like total crap lately. GI issues, headaches. I am not taking care of myself. Yesterday I went out and did shopping to get myself back on track diet wise. I'm doing a 30 day diet challenge - non specific - I just know what I should and should not be eating. And I also want to do some physical activity to go along with that. Nothing hard, nothing too time consuming - just something to kick start my butt and get me moving a bit. I plan on using my TV up stairs in my bedroom so a YouTube video or something that I can watch on a smart TV will be best. It's been too cold for me to want to go outside, so I'm looking for a home/indoor workout. Needs to be a video that doesn't require special equipment and shouldn't be something with too much jumping around on the floor. Anyone have any good suggestions? I'm overwhelmed by the choices I'm finding when I search. AHHHHH!
You might look at Yoga with Adriene on YouTube. I don't follow her always, but she does usually have a monthly playlist, I just looked at March and I think I might give it a try. The nice thing is that it's a "plan", you don't have to decide on what to do next.
I am a fan of HIIT WORKOUTS app. No need for a TV or DVD player, just your phone. Quick 16--20 min workouts that burn 100 calories. Some lighter stuff too. I like the 16 min/100 calorie workout when I am VERY short on time (at least I did something...and my legs burn after). And, there are some lighter/easier workouts on the app too. In DVDs, my favorite is P90X3. I was gifted the original P90X but like the P90X3 series much better because the workouts are 30 minutes. And again--you will FEEL them! This series breaks down DVDs/workouts into legs vs arms vs cardio vs stretch/flexibility. It has it all. Some equipment is needed---either bands (all workouts show how to use bands in lieu of weights) and/or pull up bar (just get an over the door one--most exercises can be replaced with bands) and dumbbells are must. I know you said no equipment, but dumbbells are easy to buy, store and move. There are so many ways to use them to hit different muscle groups. You can even hold one while doing sit ups to work the abs even more. Just sayin' They are small and versatile.
I need to get back on the same bandwagon too. I've been walking three times a week, but I haven't been to the gym since March and my muscles NEED more. When I do real workouts I have way less neck/shoulder aches and pains. I was doing some videos on Amazon Prime in the spring by a lady name Maggie Binkley. They are all 15 minutes long and are great. usually hand weights and a mat. Sometimes I'd only do one video, but usually I would pick two, like one for legs and one yoga or something like that, then the next time I'd do arms and abs... She actually even had a plan to follow for days of the week which took the decision making out of my hands, which I liked.
Another vote for the Yoga with Adrienne and also The Girl with the Pilates Mat (she has a wide range of workouts).
I walk every day! I really don't feel well if I don't and missed it for about a week when we had that freak Polar Vortex and EXTREMELY cold weather. First of all - do you have a Yoga mat? If you do, get down on it and STRETCH!!! That would be the first thing I would do! Just get down on that mat. Then, start doing planks. They're extremely hard, and don't get discouraged, but do what you can do. They're amazing for your core! I worked my way up to a 5 minute plank. JUST DO IT, Jenn!!! MOVE!!! Count your steps!!! Anything else you need a cheerleader for?????
FOLLOWING!! I finally made the committment today to shift to a healthy lifestyle. Too many aches and inflamation.Been researching the food intake end of this, but want a video program I can follow. I CANNOT jump or run in any way due to hip issues (that I believe will improve after a few months of new activity) and I do not do yoga. I had found an "exercise in place" routine on Youtube, but now I can't find it. Something like that would be a good start. Right now my hip is so bad I can't ride my new bike. But I believe that in about 6 weeks that will not be the case. Glad you posted this, @jenn mccabe !!
I really like Fitness blender. Their workouts are free on YouTube. You can buy a plan pretty inexpensively if you want them to tell you what order to do the videos. There's a husband and wife that do them. They have all sorts: cardio, HIIT, stretching, weights, no equipment, low impact, high impact. I like to see my instructor sweat too especially if it's hard for me because it encourages me, so I like her. It feels like a more in shape, knowledgeable, friend inviting me to workout.
Thank you very much - I've done a few of hers now & like them a lot!!! ... before I saw this, I started day 1 with a quick video by Yoga with Bird on Youtube. It was after another Youtube workout and I felt like I just needed to stretch.
I have the original P90X so I do have bands and the pull up bar somewhere. We don't have a DVD player hooked up to any TV these days though. I think I need to start smaller scale for now. I remember those videos being really tough at times. My husband has dumbbells. I think I meant no big/machine equipment. We have a bike but that thing kills my a$$. It's a no go for me. I've done a few HIITs workouts at this point. OMG you feel it fast! So thank you for the recommend on these types of workouts - they are quick and tough. (BTW is this a military thing? 'cause my son told me to start doing these types of workouts too when I was asking him what I should do. )
I will check her out, thanks! I found myself picking 2 videos too. Usually a yoga/stretch and then another workout. I am the type that would benefit from a plan too. I am so not a fitness guru! I've had fun this past week just trying different things that I find. Funny story ... One day I had just done a tough HIIT workout after Lisa recommended doing those, and then I just wanted to walk and move a bit more. I found one that was a Walk with me type video and figured that looked like a good chill one. Nope. Her "walk" was a whole other workout involving squats and a slew of other clearly not "walking" activities. I should have just stopped it but stupid me kept going and I nearly died trying to get up the stairs to my bedroom later that night. Lesson learned not to over do it in the beginning ... or trust the title! I also can't wait to get outside to walk again. I think our walking trails finally are clear of snow by now. I'm going to take the dogs with me this weekend and check them out!
I am fast becoming a fan of Adrienne! I will check out the other one too. Haven't tried her yet. Thank you!
Yes... and YES! Funny you say that because after I posted this, I went hunting for stuff on youtube. I can play Youtube videos easily on my big TV and see and follow along best. I did a workout and then went right for a yoga stretch video. It felt so good. I actually got up early a few days this past week - before work - just to redo those morning yoga stretch videos. They are like 10 or 15 minutes and such a great way to start the day. AND ... after Lisa's recommendation of doing some HIIT, the first one I picked involved planks. They were just for 20 or 30 seconds each rep, but dear lord it was the worst part of the workout for me. So hard - but I did them I am SO impressed you can do them for 5 minutes. You will be my inspiration Cheryl! Gonna channel you every time I do them!
We are not alone! We can do this "together"! How did you make out this week? Find anything you like? I have dramatically changed my diet - and the GI issues are pretty much gone. I feel really good right now as far as that area is concerned. I also am not into jumping for a workout. So far the ones I've picked have been geared toward the no jumping too. I found one that was pretty good Project Body on Youtube or something - I did one that did not involve jumping and the 2 assistants each did a different level of the workout -so you could follow the one more in line with your needs. I did see they also had a video specifically labeled low impact/no jumping (or something like that) too. I did not try that one yet. I haven't picked or settled on one program. I'm still in the trial phase!
There is an APP called HIIT Workouts. I highly recommend it. For the Army, our physical fitness test changed. While HIIT is not taught/trained, it is a logical type of workout to help prep for the sprint, drag, carry.
I have a few if you like Zumba or aerobics or just want a 'virtual walking companion' for a particular number of steps - I'll come back later when at computer (linking from phone is not one of my fave things)
Walking the dog Getting up off the couch Bed rolls The search the fridge Pick up toys off floor Vacuum .... are just a few of my favorites... lmao No serisouly I need to start getting in shape soon... I walk a lot in summer and swim laps..but need more of a daily thing...so I am stalking this post
i am the worst at dancing type of workouts. especially if watching on a TV so i am facing the instructor. i spend so much time trying to get the moves right - they are on to the next thing by the time i get it. so those are not for me!
