eReaders.... which do you have?

i know some people have pretty strong opinions about why one is better than the other (nook vs kindle). i'm not super clear on what the reasons are, and would love to know. the one thing i will say about my kindle is that it was fantastic in the summer sitting outside with the kids. the screen had vertually no glare and i was able to read it in the sun with no problem. that was huge for me, as we spent many long hours at beaches and parks and whatnot.

i did have a moment the other day though that i wished for a tiny second i had a nook instead of a kindle. i was at Barnes & Noble getting paper books for my kiddos for Christmas. they have a yearly membership that costs $25 and then you get 10% off of everything you buy after that. So every book I DL'd would be 10% off. but oh well. i still love my kindle and i'm not giving it up any time soon. if i do, it will be for a kindle fire or a tablet that serves the same purpose but does more.

With the ages of my kids I could never sit at the beach or pool and read so I never needed a screen that was good for that. I do, however; read in the dark a lot at bed time. Especially when I was trying to get my now 4 year old to sleep in her own stinking bed and I would end up on the floor a ton. It was great to be able to read my books until she fell asleep. I also read in bed all the time. I also do Swagbucks and trade in my points for B&N giftcards all the time and that's how I buy my books on my Nook. I'm also one of those people who has been so addicted to my laptop and iPhone that it drives me bonkers when a screen is dim, so even though I have never used a Kindle I worry about that.

I think it all has to do with what you prefer. I don't think one is actually more awesome then the other.. they are just more awesome for certain people. I never did research into mine. I got mine for Christmas last year and my husband bought it without me even asking for an ereader. I guess he knows me well because I love it!

If anyone gets a clear answer about B&N memberships and Nook books, let me know! We've had a membership for a couple years now and I love it. We always get Starbucks in there because you can save 10% on that too!

I have an iPad2, but I haven't yet read any books on it. I have the option of Nook, Kindle and iBooks. But I'm still stuck in my "I need to hold a real book" mindset. Same thing with magazines, though DH has told me several times that I should just read them on the iPad.

You know, this is interesting to me, I rented a Kindle 2 from the library to see if I would like it. I am a traditional book gal, I love reading an actual book, but I also like audiobooks on my iPod. I have an iPhone but my iPod saves my place and is easier to navigate for books, and a bit smaller. I tried the Kindle and couldn't figure it out!! I had trouble flipping pages and going back and it was super complicated. I wondered if I just tried the old old old version and the newer ones were better. My husband has an iPad, I don't use it but I would read on it if I had it with me, it's large enough and easy to maneuver.

Am I missing out on the hype of these e-readers?

kat i've never had any issues with turning pgs on the kindle. :shrug

there's even a way to skip from one chapter to the next or back a chapter. plus on the menu you can select to go to a certain page if you want. or you can add a bookmark if you think you will want to come back to a specific spot later. and when you turn it off and back on again, it starts back up at the exact spot you left off.

maybe you did have some wonky old version of the kindle??? that's weird.

I want either a kindle fire or Nook color. I have researched pros and cons of both and from what I have read Barnes and Noble have better support and better battery life on their Tablet. But alot of people love Amazon and it has the Storage cloud so that is a perk with the Kindle fire. She said the main differences between the cheaper nook color and new nook tablet is the tablet is made more for streaming movies and tv and is a little faster than the Nook color.

My hesitation though is I get a lot of books from the library as I do not want to have to buy all the books I read. I know our library has free downloadable books to rent but there are not that many titles. And most of the books I want to read end up being book series that would cost a lot to have to buy digitally. So not sure what I will end up doing. I do want one to use more as a tablet when I am in my bedroom instead of having to come into the desktop computer or use my cell phone.

Oooh, I shall be following this thread with interest! Hubby is fed up of tripping over my piles of books everywhere (I'm a reader, he's not, he's tidy, I'm...er....not) so I told him to get me an e-reader for Christmas and that will solve the problem! :giggle I've been looking at the Kindle too.

Yes, same at my house. LOL

I was an early adopter of the Kindle. It definitely solved the book problem. Last year, I moved from my Kindle to an iPad kindle app. DH uses the old Kindle, but I got him a Kindle Fire for Christmas. DD1 is also getting a Kindle touchscreen. I'm another who prefers Amazon to B&N. We are Prime users, so adding the kindle stuff along with 2 day shipping and streaming movies makes us happy.

the BN membership never used to apply to Nook Books. Does it now?? I have had a membership up until a couple months ago and just haven't renewed because it didn't apply to nook books. :(

The reason I chose a nook over a kindle was primarily for in store support. I LOVE being able to go to the store if I have an issue or anything, though that hasn't happened yet. I have had zero issues with it at all but the thought is nice that I can do that if I need to!

You are right...no discount on Nook books with a membership, but many many other perks that I love (like free shipping). With all of my family out of state, it's my "go to" gift --books or toys from B&N. Love the discount and free ship, plus they are part of Upromise, so I have saved over $1000 for college from online shopping. Amazon is not part of Upromise which was my original draw to B&N. We bought a Nook color and LOVE it. I know many people IRL who love Kindle too...so it's just what you use and get to love. As for people who hesitate because they use the library...You can lend books and they have sites to lend and borrow electronic books too...

I just decided to become a prime user. I'm not yet, but it's something I know we'll use a lot!

Something else I've heard, is that the library system is more friendly to Kindle users than Nook users. I have no actual knowledge of this though. Whatever format you choose, I love that I can sync between my phone (during break at work) and my Kindle or my iPad if that's what I have in front of me. Wherever I leave off, I can sync up to my last page read on any of my devices. It's so wonderful! I'm sure it's the same with either Nook or Kindle. Just get one...whatever you get you won't be sorry!

We are going to open and load up my oldest sons Kindle Fire with books and comics before we send it to him for Christmas. We want him to not have to worry about buying anything right away. My youngest is really looking forward to playing with it while we're buying all the goodies. He doesn't know he's getting one too!! I love it when I know I've chosen the right gift!

that's funny carolee, i bought the series for my MIL for Christmas! :rofl

merry Christmas to her ;)

LOL!

Just to add to the discussion, I have been checking out tons of books from my local library on my Kindle and I love it! It saves me so much money and they are easy to get.

I can't add anything to the library discussion cause I live outside of the county seat so I have to pay 50 bucks a year to use the closest library and I don't want to do that so I haven't yet! I know you can from the Nook though...just not sure how easy it is or anything.

I think I do have a wonky old version... it reminds of when computers were a big ugly box. lol. I am taking it back today.

Amazon has a Kindle sweepstakes going on right now on Facebook. I'll take one if it's free! :)

lol!!!!

I actually tried to order a Kindle Fire to see how much it would come to with exchange and taxes and shipping and the lot well wouldn't you know that they're currently not shipping it to Canada.... BOLLOCKS!!!! So they redirected to a page with the ones that they do ship. It looks like I'll probably be getting a Kobo touch ereader since they seem to be the popular one here in Canada. I looked at the Kobo Vox (competitor to the Fire and Nook tablet) and the reviewsw were BAD so I guess I'll just get the basic... but I love bells and whistles. lol!

I had a Sony ereader first then got the iPad so sold the ereader but then found the glare on the screen used to hurt my eyes at night and I'd fall asleep plus my mind would wonder and before I realised I'd be on the Internet or Facebook lol plus it was just to heavy to hold in the bath I had to have a plank of wood over bath to lean it on lol.so I had the kindle for my birthday and love how portable it is easy on the eyes and user friendly and Kate I'm like you messy messy messy
