Dying Hair | PP 5.2

I got my first gray hairs when I was 15, but they weren't noticeable. I started dyeing my hair in my late 20's, off and on. I started highlighting and lowlighting my hair about 12 years ago. I keep going lighter and lighter.

I like it . . . well, until my little niece was playing a game with me and my sister, and she said, if you have black and white hair, raise your hand! I looked around and guessed it must be me . . . bwahahahahaha . . . I still do like it, but you know, children speak the truth. Now I'm continually wondering if peeps think I'm Cruella DeVille! LOL

I started getting a stripe of grey right in the front at 18... once that got super noticable I started coloring my hair. Now I am 40 and I have grey peeking out all over too, so I just keep coloring. I'm not ready to be grey yet.

I've given up. I am/was blond. So when I started getting some grey (more white than grey) in college, I started highlighting. Which eventually turned into highlighting and low lighting. Then, a couple of years ago, I got my hair cut short. After that, the grey didn't bother me as much for some reason. I think the mix of colors I have shows up better when it's short. Plus, with short hair, I'm getting a cut every four to five weeks, that's already a chunk of money, I just couldn't justify color on top of it. I thought about coloring it myself, but I have a weird hang up about facing my stylists afterward if I did.

Clara loves the thought of color and we've tried twice... a streak of blue one time and purple ends another, but her hair will NOT take color. The blue streak they just dyed because she's blond... it only lasted a couple of days. The purple made it about a week since they bleached her ends (even though they were already pretty light), just to see if that would help the color hold.

Alex has had his hair dyed twice, once when he was 10 and another time at 11. He was in the professional production of Miracle on 34th Street here in Chicago and played the role of Thomas Mara, Jr. The man who played Thomas Mara was a redhead, so they wanted his son to match.

I dye my hair maybe 3 or 4 times a year to cover up some gray. I usually try to stay close to or a little darker than my original color. Lighter never works for me - it just never looks right!

I don't dye my hair. I occasionally get a grey hair. I'm not sure what I'll do when I start getting grey. I usually go to the salon 1x year to get the ends trimmed (I trim my own bangs)...and I can't imagine trying to keep up with dying my hair to keep up with the roots. I may just let it go...depending on what it looks like. Isn't grey/silver a trend right now? Maybe we can just keep that going? Ha!

I figure there's a reason our hair goes grey - to soften our look as we age. I've been getting grey hairs for a long time. I remember on my 23rd birthday I checked to see if I had any grey, and I stopped after counting 50 hairs. It rather depressed me. But I've always had many different colors in my hair ranging from light blonde to medium brown, so it all blends right on in.

I don't have either the time or money it would take to dye away the grey, so it stays. I used to highlight it when I kept my hair real short, and did a layered dye for my wedding, which I immediately grew out. That's about the extent of it. My hair's also been thinning (it's hereditary) so I don't want to put undue stress on it either.

I've always wanted to try a strawberry-blonde henna. Maybe one day I'll be brave enough to try!
