Drive In Movie | Pad Patter 5.19

I think my parents took me a couple of times as I child when we moved to Maryland. I think we stopped because my father and I hated the hot muggy weather and by then we had air-conditioning at home. I actually don't remember ever going to the movies with my parents but I did go on Saturdays with my girlfriend for the kids matinee.

By the time I was dating, my bf and I went a few times but they had become pretty seedy by then and it wasn't the place you wanted to be at night. Lots of running around and the main point seemed to be a dark place to you know what.

There was a drive-in theater less than a mile from where I grew up and I never went. Not even once. I do remember my parents going to see a few movies when I was little but I was too little for whatever movies they were seeing. It closed down when I was in high school and somehow I even missed all the closing shows. I kind of regret it now that I never experienced it but I don't even know where the closest drive-in theater is now. Actually, I didn't think they still existed...

We don't have any in Seattle although I think there is one in Kent, but I grew up with them as did my kids in Iowa. My husband grew up in a small town (250 people) and the locals would hang up a sheet in the baseball field and everyone would come in to watch the movie. He still remembers seeing the Creatures of the Black Lagoon at the makeshift, drive in theater. Ah, such kinder, gentler times.

The Valley 6 closed a few years ago. So depressing. We loved going to the drive-in. So many memories!!! Sadly there aren't any around us anymore.

One of the drive-in memories from childhood... my mom was dating some guy that we really didn't like. She apparently didn't like him so much either (I think that was their last date). He went to the bathroom and got lost/couldn't find the car. We all giggled as we watched him walk around in the dark for quite awhile trying to find the car. My mom finally felt bad and sent my brother out after him. :giggle

A funny/weird story... there used to be an x-rated drive-in in Washington in the late 70s. I remember my mom talking about it when we were kids because some guy she worked with told her he wanted to take her. Ewwwwwwww.

There is one almost 45 minutes away from us, and we've gone once (to see Avengers: Age of Ultron last summer). It was fun, but we are not really theater people in general and still prefer to wait for movies to come out on disc/download so we can just watch them at home. We have a projector + big screen, the popcorn is a LOT cheaper, and we have access to the magical "pause" button and also snuggly kitty cats.

There's another drive in about an hour away from us, but we have yet to go. I really want to take the kids at least once, just so they can experience it, but an hour both ways, plus a double feature, means leaving early and getting home laaaaaaate. BUT DRIVE IN'S ARE SO AWESOME!!!

Just go. Think of it as an experience. The one we used to go to in New Hampshire was about 45-60 minutes away. And it was still fun. Yeah, it was late, but we didn't plan anything for the morning after except lazy sleep.

I loved going to them as a teen out in California, but there really aren't any out in the mid-Atlantic area anymore. There's a few, but you need to drive long distances to them.

We did go to one in San Luis Obispo, California a couple years back so the kids could experience one, and we had a grand time! Saw the Transformers. It was the perfect drive-in movie!

It's going on the list for summer. I'm excited!!
