We went to the drive in theatre last night. And it made me curious, do you have a drive in near enough to visit?
Did you ever go as a kid?

We love it, and I can remember going as a child. My parents would let us watch the first movie, then flip the vehicle around, so we could sleep, while they enjoyed the second one.

We went with my parents a lot as kids. We would put on our pyjamas and take our pillows. The first feature was for kids and the second for the adults, by which time we were likely asleep. When my kids were small there were a couple of drive-ins in Quebec, but my husband told me they had to drive to Ontario for a drive-in because Quebec did not allow them when he was a kid.

Never been to one. There were none where I grew up and there aren't any here. I know there was at least one sort of nearby when I lived in MN, but I didn't have a car anyway so it was kind of a moot point.

We do! And we don't go often enough. I remember doing it all the time as a kid too. A few of us were talking about doing this summer with our daughters. We need to make that happen!

I went one time as a kid. It was a Superman/Supergirl double feature. I still remember Helen Slater flying across the screen, clear as day. I would've been 7.

We're 35 miles away from the nearest drive-in & we go whenever there's a good kid friendly movie out. 5yr old can't sit through a movie, but loves them. We put the kids in pajamas, throw sleeping bags & pillows in the back seat, & stop to pick up dinner. We buy the giant bucket of popcorn and settle in. The last time we went, we saw Zootopia and Star Wars. The best is when they do special stuff like old Christmas movies in December & they showed Purple Rain after Prince died. The hard part is that they start so late at night.

This was our wedding anniversary last August.

We don't have any in Seattle although I think there is one in Kent, but I grew up with them as did my kids in Iowa. My husband grew up in a small town (250 people) and the locals would hang up a sheet in the baseball field and everyone would come in to watch the movie. He still remembers seeing the Creatures of the Black Lagoon at the makeshift, drive in theater. Ah, such kinder, gentler times.

I never went as a kid, but we go quite a bit in the summer. I'm not sure if there are any near Chicago, we go to one in Michigan. I've heard that there are some not too far from the city, but you have to be there super early since the line to get in will be really long (again, just what I've heard). We go to the Cherry Bowl Drive-In in Honor, MI. Absolutely adore that place! Nothing over PG-13, very family friendly. We've learned the tricks over the years and always bring our portable radio so we can hear the movie without having to run the car the whole time (plus Jeff and I usually sit just outside the car, having the portable radio means we can hear too!). They run the movie no matter what, one night we watched the movie in a downpour! :-) The drive-in was the subject of one of my MOC layouts (double page spread one, I think)...

We used to go to the drive in theaters off and on when I was growing up. When we were little my Dad would put a board across the back seat and make a bed of blankets for us kids. He always popped a ton of popcorn that nearly filled a big brown grocery bag for everyone to share and off we'd go. I remember seeing Tom Thumb at a drive in. The only part I didn't like about going was having to climb out of that car after the long drive home and walk inside to my bedroom. Us kids would always fall asleep before the second movie was over and it was hard for me to be woke up when we got home. In my teen years my Mom would often make our dinner for us to take and we'd eat it before the movie started. A picnic at the drive in. Fun memories.

You mean there are actually drive-in theaters around???? LOVED them as a kid with my parents and then as a teen with the whole gang. What fun!! Only tore the speaker off the stand once!!

Courtney, What time did the second show start and which location did you go to? Redwood Road or Ogden?

I loved drive in movies as a kid, but sadly have never taken my kids to one. We should do that this summer.

You totally should even if it's just for the experience! I went to redwood, I'm not sure when the second movie started (maybe 11ish) but the first was at 9pm.

I wish we had one close to us! The kids would love it. :) Maybe there's one not too far away, but IDK of any.

I love the drive-in! I would much prefer to go there than the actual theater! We have one about 10 or 15 minutes from the house and try to go several times during the summer.

It was the only place that showed movies nearby, next closest was over an hour away so we did drive ins a lot as kids. I remember being scandalised and slightly impressed - when we went with the neighbours big kids and they chucked a couple of their brothers in the boot (trunk) to smuggle them in for nothing. I felt like a drug smuggler and was so relieved when we made it in...

Most memorable were Star Wars (my first movie obsession!) and for some unknown reason, Mum and Dad let me go see Jaws 2 with friends when I was about 10 - so terrifying!

I would love to go to another one...

YES!!! Randomly, the newspaper did a story on the Utah ones today. There are 8 in the state. There used to be a website you could look them up in your area, but all the ones I'm finding are outdated.

There is one near us, but it's in a bad part of the town it's in, so we haven't gone. I did go when I was little. I don't remember what movie it was that we saw, but I remember being put in pjs and hanging out in the back of the car and thinking how cool it was.

We used to have one in my town when I was younger but the city demolished it after being out of business for a while back in 2003. We would go quite often and it was only $5 a carload! Mom would pop giant bags of popcorn at home, we'd get in our PJ's, and lay out in front of the car on our sleeping bags. There's another drive in about an hour away from us, but we have yet to go. I really want to take the kids at least once, just so they can experience it, but an hour both ways, plus a double feature, means leaving early and getting home laaaaaaate. BUT DRIVE IN'S ARE SO AWESOME!!!

We have 2 that are a bit away, but so much fun and usually worth it! The NJ one is about an hour and a half, and the one in NY is pry an hour an 15 or so. They don't do car loads anymore, but charge per person - still cheaper since it's always a double feature, and occasionally offer a triple feature. We try to go a once a year.

I went as a kid so many times, with so many friends crammed in the car between my parents and their friends. It was car load back then & it was a blast! They always had a park, and the the concession stand, so we were allowed a little freedom. We would go early, bring dinner, play at the park, and settle in to watch the shows.

Oh yes, we have a drive-in theater a few miles away. I used to go alot as a teen, it was a every weekend event then. Now, we maybe make it every other year or so...
