Downton Abbey

I haven't seen the show, but I'm getting more and more interested because everyone is talking about it everywhere I go!!

Oh I am sad! I knew it was coming too because I had seen a spoiler, but I still don't like!

I knew what was coming and I think it really hurts the show. This past season didn't live up to the last two IMO. I wonder how they are going to recover next year.

Lady Mary is such a pill that I thought instead of killing him off, maybe they'd send him to India or something, try to resolve his contract dispute. I was much more devastated about Lady Sybil. I have to say, I think the only characters I really liked this season were Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes.

I'm late to this train but plan to watch from the beginning as soon as hubs and I are caught up on SOA (late to that train, too).

I have been keeping my feelings inside for so long...I had already seen the whole series before it aired here, so I knew what was gonna happen :(

It's really weird how they showed them in the states. The UK series was actually 9 episodes (8 regular plus the Christmas special)...and they combined and cut a little down to 7 episodes total here.

When you say they cut a little down, did we miss something? At two hours an episode, it certainly didn't seem like anything was left out - this season was a bit of a snoozer compared to the first season.

So sad here, too. It makes me not want to even watch any more. But I'm sure I'll get over it by next year.

I'm glad I saw the spoiler beforehand! And I read an interview with the actor who plays him, and he said he didn't want to do television anymore - it didn't sound like a contract dispute to me, but just an issue of him wanting to move on. So sad!!! I agree, this season wasn't quite as good, but who knows what next season holds! Something good for Edith, I hope! I always feel so sad for her.

Poor Edith! I didn't even think the guy was that bad - so he was a little old, and he had a bum arm - I think she would have been happy. I don't like this creepy editor - he's no Rochester - right, crazy wife in the attic - convenient. Maybe she and Rose will be good influences on each other.

I just watched it this afternoon and even though I had heard some spoilers and knew that he was not going to be returning, it still made me sad. And I didn't love this season as much as I have the past seasons, but I still loved it and am sad that it is over until next season. :(

OK, no one hate me because I'm really not trying to rain on your Downton Abbey parade, but... I just can't get into the show. I've watched a few episodes and I just don't like it.
So, like I said, not trying to be a Debbie Downer about the show. :) I mention my ambivalence because now you all have me wondering: should I stick with it (hoping I start to really get hooked), or are you ladies so darn angry about the season finale that I should just wash my hands of the show and stop watching?

It took me a few episodes of the first season to really be hooked. But if you don't like it, we won't hold it against you! :)

I don't hate you - I'm jealous - I wish I hadn't gotten so sucked in, because now I just can't quit Downton. Season 1 was sooo good, Season 2 started to go off the rails, and Season 3 was ok, but just not what Season 1 was.

I'm not really angry about the Season 3 finale - I kind of agree with this review that it's probably for the best.

I'm so embarrassed that as a lover of all things English I have not yet seen even 1 episode of this show ... note to self hire the season 1 DVD asap!

my DH's grandma asked me tonight if I watched Downton. When I told her pretty much what I'd said here, she was like "Oh, you've got to watch it." This little old lady (and I mean little. She comes up to my elbow) was so serious too! She kept saying "Sara, give it a few more episodes! It's so gooooood." She's like 85 years old and lives on the other side of the country, but I promised her I'd watch the first season.
So now I feel familial guilt--actually, in-law familial guilt lol--to watch it. :) But Wendy, I hope I like all of it and the series stays great. I dutifully watched LOST and I h.a.t.e.d. the final season cuz it just wasn't true to the start of the show. I still get mad when I think about it. So I hope DA won't be like that for me.

Well, if Grandma says you have to watch it, you have to watch it. At least she didn't tell you you had to watch Mork and Mindy reruns. Downton Abbey doesn't deteriorate in the same way Lost did, and you really won't get invested in Downton like Lost (I'm with you on that last season) Lost really was an experience - Downton is just eye candy, fabulous one liners from Maggie Smith, and at least in the first season, a compelling Upstairs Downstairs look at this aristocratic household, slowly being pulled into the next century. After the first season, it's more General Hospital than Gosford Park
