We got an amazon gift certificate for Christmas and used it to get the ice cream maker attachment to our kitchen aid...so who has some yummy recipes??
My SIL and BIL LOVE love LOVE to make their own ice cream and swear its cheaper then buying ice cream at the store, is this true? I can't imagine that to be so but I am looking forward to making simple ice cream without all those added ingredients!

oh I would love that! I am lactose intolerant and haven't had icecream in years! If I made my own I could use lactose free milk! Cream is already lactose free so it's just the milk that's the problem! Let us know how it goes!

I got an ice cream maker for a wedding present and love it. I don't use it often as we are not big ice cream eaters around here but it sure is yummy. Hmm not sure about it being cheaper I guess that would depend on what you put in it

That would be a bad idea around here.

I'm lactose intolerant, not a big ice cream eater, but if Tom could make his own whenever he wanted to then he might eat nothing but ice cream.

Although when it comes to things that we "make ourselves" most of the time we look at one another like "We could just .. you know .. BUY this .."

LOL!! Us too...too lazy to do it ourselves! hee hee! But you can't buy lactose free ice cream here (not sure if you can) so I would love it for every now and then!

LOL exactly US too!!!

BUT its goes with out less pre-packaged stuff in 2010 goal! Since I can my cream at the local co-op. Although I think the first one we are making is banana blueberry sorbet! :)

I do!! Love it, and it means that you can make flavours that the shops have never even heard of! We love Cardamom and pistachio ice cream. Yum. Oh, and Baileys (Irish Cream) ice cream (with chunks of brownie ideally) is so much better than Haagen Dazs. And I made Lemon Meringue Ice Cream Pie for Christmas Dessert and everyone was completely wowed and it was really easy!

Will have a look for some recipes for you but they might be gibberish as we use different measures and I can't make sense of american or australian recipes easily ;-).

Definitely recommend the Ben and Jerry's recipe book, it's paperback so quite cheap and is mostly recipes that they don't sell.

OMG I am drooling over the banana blueberry sorbet and lemon meringue pie ice cream! YUM! :D

Oooo, if you guys share your recipes I might be forced to get out my ice cream maker. We got one as a gift years ago and used it twice.

I used to make banana ice cream without the ice cream maker with banana, cream and sweetened condensed milk.

We usually buy cheap reduced fat ice cream and let it melt a little, then add our own ingredients and refreeze it. In fact I made my "Christmas pudding" that way with dried fruits soaked in amaretto and butterscotch schnapps. Everyone loved it (including the kids)

I have made it a few times. Still haven't found a recipe I love though. One time I made raspberry sorbet, it was good, but at the price of raspberries, I think one pint of ice cream cost me about $20. :rollingpin

We have quarterly meetings and we normally try to do a pot luck. Our manager (and his wife) are always in charge of desert. They started making ice cream for us. WOW! It is like coffee ice cream with cinnamon toast dipped in it. It's amazing. I don't have the recipe for it since i don't have an ice cream maker yet. But its enough to get one!

I love to make our own ice cream! So good, I don't know that it is cheaper than store bought but it is tons better. Lots of what we make is more custard like, though. I will have to look up some of our favorite recipes and put on here.
I did make Pioneer Woman's blackberry ice cream with some fresh blackberries last summer and it was to die for good!

I used to, and it was REALLY good, but my maker died and I never replaced it!

This cracks me up because everytime my 16 year old dd and I go shopping we look at each other and say "we could just...you know...MAKE this!"

I like this basic vanilla from Fannie Farmer... to which most anything can be added - no eggs and very easy

4 cups heavy cream (or 2 cups heavy & 2 cups light)
3/4 c sugar
pinch of salt
1tsp minced vanilla bean or two tsp vanilla (extract not flavoring)
mix together til sugar dissolves, then put into machine and freeze

for coffee ice cream add 2TBS instant coffee with the vanilla - really good with those mini chocolate chips too (they sink so wait to add them when you get a slush consistancy)

or try omitting the vanilla and adding 2 tsp lemon extract - my grandma did it this way

add can pumpkin pie mix for pumpkin ice cream - I do this by sight... I have never measured - pumpkin fudgy with hot fudge sauce.... YUMMO

kaluha or ammaretto chip - use your liquor instead of the vanilla and once again, add your chips when it gets a bit slushy.

I have made chocolate by whisking melted chocolate into the cream prior to freezing too

the possibilities are endless...

Oh wow! These all sound so amazingly yummy! I never even knew people made their own ice cream these days! The last time I had homemade ice cream was when I was little. My grandfather had this old fashioned ice cream maker. But I do remember it being yummy!
