Hi everyone! I recently started reading Agatha Christie’s books, and I have to say, I’m absolutely in love with them. Her storytelling, the clever twists, and, of course, Hercule Poirot’s brilliant mind are so captivating! This year, I’ve set myself a goal to read all the 40 Poirot books, and I’m really excited to dive deeper into the world of classic detective stories. How about you? Do you enjoy detective stories? Have you read any of Agatha Christie’s books, if so, which was your favourite? Do you have other favorites in the genre? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
I like lots of book genres, but yes I do like detective stories in the mix too. I've only ever read one Agatha Christie book and that was Murder on the Orient Express which I enjoyed. Did you know we have a book club here at TLP? You can see all of our picks over the years in THIS thread. We have some books in a bunch of genres over there too.
Karen beat me to it. The book club has a lot of great recommendations. you should friend some of us on Goodreads to see what we all are reading. I like a few different genres but mostly suspense/mystery books.
My mum loved Agatha Christi's books. I was more into sci-fi, but my eldest loves the detective books now.
I love Agatha Christi and any kind of detective stories ... I am currently reading Sebastian Fitzek's psychological thrillers ...
I had the whole set of Christie books back in the 1980's. Love them and read most of them. I will say that some are not up to her standard and I had a hard time getting through them. These days I am a big fan of cozy mysteries. Mysteries without all the gore and usually are quick reads. A favorite author there is Lynn Cahoon. She has several series of cozy mysteries. Each of them has their main character and sub-characters and follow a time line of their life. Fun reads. I tend to like series books as well and get quite a few for free or cheap on my Kindle. Got a whole bunch to read when I'm in the mood to read. Boxed sets are great... get up to 10 books at once. Two other authors of mysteries that are more on the dark side are Steve Robinson and Debbie Viguie. Robinson writes genealogical mysteries. His main character is a genealogist that ends up solving mysteries through genealogical research. Debbie Viguie has a series called the Psalm 23 Mysteries. Again, she has a couple of main characters (a girl being the main character and the man becoming very important in the stories right away). She's got 19 books in the series so far with 4 more to go. I had to set up a spreadsheet to track all my books and what ones I've read.
I read a lot of crime books. Actually is planning to get some Agatha Christie read this year. Only read And Then There Were None before. Aldo thinking of reading some Conan Doyle too.
I love mysteries -- it's probably my #1 genre. I read a lot of Agatha Christie when I was a kid - mostly just in a random order (my parents used to be big yard sale people so there were always boxes of used books around). I have recently been revisiting them, starting from the beginning. It's been fun but I agree with @HavaDrPepper that the quality is uneven.
I love Mystery with a little romance in the mix. Agatha Christie was too tough for me. I could never get whodunnit and so I stopped trying... Maybe I should try again?
Cozy mysteries might be what you might like... mystery with a little romance in the mix. I was a big fan of romance books (especially Harlequin books) as a teenager when they were the flirty type of romance. There might have been a kiss in there but nothing more explicit. The cozy mysteries that I read have that little bit of romance with the mystery being the main story. The romance is usually a side story that develops thru out the series of books. If you want some authors, let me know. And, the ones I read are quick reads much like the Harlequin books.
I absolutely love Agatha christie!! During my teenage years and early adulthood, I read almost all of her books, I used to go to the library or used books store to get them. I had a theory, the ones with numbers on the title, like : The thirteen problems , were the best. I think those had more mystery to solve, maybe?? you should read the most known ones like Murder on the Orient Express and And Then there were no one. and stay away from the new books written by an authorized writer, it's really bad...she tries to be Agatha, but stays so far...it's a shame.
and thinking about this genre, I LOVE detective, mistery, thriller, cozy mystery books... I really like the Thursday Murder Club series, there are 4 books available and there will be a Netflix movie with brilliant actors... other books on the cozy mistery vibe are the ones by Louise Penny (only a few released here in Brazil, but she has a lot in English). I found a site with a list of authors on this style but I don't know many, so I'm not responsible is those books are not good LOL - Cozy Mystery List | A Guide to Cozy Mystery (and Other Favorite) Books, Movies, and TV I unlinked the site so we don't have problems with outside links.
I don’t know if the world is spying on me, but today I got an email from Amazon saying a bunch of Agatha Christie books are on sale for Kindle today for $1.99 https://www.amazon.com/b?nodl=1&nod...&dplnkId=94c1e9f3-f736-440d-818f-7575c4420562
@Karen I believe the bots and algorithm work this way.. it happens a lot, specially when I'm on my phone
I read a couple Agatha Christie books growing up but don’t remember which ones. I like mystery books because I can never figure them out. I recently listened to some Sherlock Holmes shorts that I enjoyed.
I love mysteries. Here’s a few of my faves, some much darker than others. PD James (Adam Dalgliesh), Ann Cleeves (Shetland series), Peter James, Jacqueline Winspear are all great British mystery writers. Then there’s Kathy Reichs and the Temperance Brennan series, JA Janice, JD Robb, Rachel Lynch, Louise Penny, Carla Neggers, Margaret Maron, to name a few. For lighter mysteries, try Janet Evanovitch’s Stephanie Plum series. If you like dark, Scandinavian mysteries, try Jo Nesbo, Camilla Lackberg, Henning Mankell
I ADORE Agatha Christie!! My mom had the entire collection but she gave them to my sister before she died. I wouldl have taken them in a heartbeat.
