I'm super late getting by here today. I have just let this whole day get away from me and didn't really accomplish anything I intended to lol.

But I did notice that today is Dewey Decimal System Day. More than 200,000 libraries in 135 countries use this system and Melvil Dewey was only 21 when he created this system. Makes me realize that I am long overdue for a trip to the library.

I haven't been for awhile, but usually I check out physical books. Our library does something just about every evening of the week. There are crochet clubs, chess clubs, story times, and several other activities.

Do you visit the library often? I visit the brick-and-mortar library at least 2 or 3 times per month, but often more frequently. I visit the library website almost every day.

Do you check out physical books or rent e-books? I check out physical books, I rent e-books, I read newspapers and magazines online, I order books and microfilms through interlibrary loan.

Does your library do any special activities? Yes. My local branch of the city's public library has some impressive programming, given that it's a small branch. A couple of months ago, I joined a new book club which meets at the library once a month: it's a lot of fun!

I listened to an audiobook about a library today so I guess it was meant to be! ;)

Do you visit the library often?
Yes I do. I’ve recently been checking out games to play with my kids.

Do you check out physical books or rent e-books?
I prefer e-books for myself but my kids prefer physical books.

Does your library do any special activities?
Yes! So many! I loved the activities when my kids were little but now they’re not as interested and we’re more busy with other activities.

I used to but as I have a lost book at the moment that I have not found yet I haven't been for ages

Do you check out physical books or rent e-books?
Mostly physical but on occasion I might grab the ebook version

Does your library do any special activities?
Yes but other than kids storytime or play time I am not sure what either local library has especially now that they have become way more community focussed offering events, workshops etc that they never used to

Since I quit working there, it's not that often. I would never set my foot in the library here in my town (the people working there are not my favorite people) and I don't go into Mora (neighbor town) that often.

Do you check out physical books or rent e-books?
I prefer reading real books and I check out books regularly. For those who wonder how I do that, when I never vist the library, the secret is to marry a librarian. :agree

Does your library do any special activities?
Lots! Book clubs, lectures, activities for kids, embroidery club, and much more. Also, it's not just a library. In Sweden it's very common that libraries are some kind of combined culture centres, hence there's a lot of art and stuff like that too.

Do you visit the library often? I do not visit the library often as it is across town. I used to visit a lot when I was working as I could run there at lunch :)

Do you check out physical books or rent e-books? I rarely check out physical books anymore. Since the pandemic and the breaking of my arm in 2021, I found borrowing books digitally from the library, is the way to go for me. It is also FREE so that works too!! They (the local library) use "Hoopla" and Overdrive for the digital books and I enjoy that and read the books on my laptop or iPhone. I do have 2 books currently on Hold to borrow when they become available at the library as they are not offering them in e-book form.

Does your library do any special activities? Ours does, but the only one I use a lot is the "Friends of the Library"... It is a place to buy hard and soft cover books for $1 or $2 that people donate. I in turn, give all my physical books that I no long want back to the library to resell at the "Friends of the Library". I recently did this with my entire collection of books except a few of my favorites as we were decluttering. :) The library was thrilled to get them :)

Yes! In fact, I need to go today. I have some books and a board game to return.

Do you check out physical books or rent e-books? Yes. To both. I borrow audiobooks too from the library - physical and digital. I borrow games - video games, board games, outdoor games. Our library has a 'library of things' which includes cake pans, record players, and ukuleles among other random stuff.

Does your library do any special activities?
Yes! Our library has preschool, homeschool, grade school, tween and teen events. And adult events. Everything from Minecraft meetups to story times, to make and take activities to graveyard tours, to geocaching. And more! They even do a gardening series with Purdue Extension in the spring/fall. And they have a seed exchange, and a food pantry.

Our library is amazing. They are currently looking to expand by taking over an old church that's been offered to them. They also have a bookmobile that they take to the senior living places and, in the summer, to spots where kids have a hard time getting to the library.

Do you visit the library often? I used to spend a lot of time at the library in the genealogy section when I was doing research in the 90's. The main branch of the county library is in my town and has a wonderful section on local genealogy for being a small county. After a remodel several years ago, it is now in its own locked room. Items would go missing when it was out in the open area.

Do you check out physical books or rent e-books? I have been getting e-books for about 10 years.

Does your library do any special activities? Yes, they have activities going on in all the branches all the time. About 15 years ago, I was going every couple of weeks to a knitting club! Knitting was something one of the retired librarians was passionate about and she talked the director into letting her start this club. Some nights we had 15 to 20 people!

Fun fact: When I headed to college in 1974, I wanted to be a librarian. Since it was a Master's Degree in those days, I changed my mind after 4 years of college. I chose the college I went to because they offered the degree in Library Science but I did love that college anyways. Had wanted to go there before I even decided on library science.

Do you visit the library often? I don't visit the brick-and-mortar building as much as I used to, but probably once every other month or so? I visit the online library a LOT though!

Do you check out physical books or rent e-books? I prefer e-book to read on my Kindle, but if our library doesn't have the e-book, I'll go in and get the paper version. If they don't have either of those, they have a lending option from any library in Michigan, so I almost always can get a free version of any book I want to read. Yay!

Does your library do any special activities? They do lots of fun events for babies through seniors! It's a great active library and all the people there are so nice and helpful. I love our library!

Do you visit the library often? No, in spite of the fact that there's a small branch about two blocks from my house. I use to go frequently when the grandkids were young ... we'd walk down our street and through the park. It's so convenient!
Do you check out physical books or rent e-books? I borrow e-books, and always have my "holds" at the limit (10).
Does your library do any special activities? They used to and I imagine they still do.

Happy Dewey Day! He may have been an unlikeable man, but he was spot on with his non-fiction shelving system. He came up with his plan exactly 150 years ago. How is it possible that a system of knowledge from essentially 1873 can last to 2023 you may ask? This when trains were relatively new and people traveled by horse, to now encompass space ships, flying airplanes and automobiles. Plus snow mobiles and under water personal submarines? There is an entire “company” (I’m not sure what else to call it, but I do believe it is non-profit) of people who assess societal and scientific changes and updates to the numbers.

Dewey also invented a colored pencil which was half red and half blue so he wouldn’t have to change pencils. He also invented/started/founded the college to educate female librarians. This at a time when Columbia Univ would not educate women, so he rented office space across the street. It provided a vehicle for much-needed jobs for women, as well as providing low cost workers for the libraries, since women didn’t get paid nearly what men did. At that time it was considered a win-win, although I understand Columbia was QUITE put out by the college right under their noses.

I have often wondered why people in bars back in the day would ask, “What’s your sign?”. They could have learned a lot more about the other person by asking, “What’s your Dewey number!?” :).. Mine is 745, but of course, that changes as my interests change.

and yes, I go to the big downtown library almost weekly, and the neighborhood library maybe every other week! Plus the day after Halloween to drop off all our extra candy. They love me. :)
