Dead Computer

It's so funny how getting a new computer reminds you of all the things you use ALL the time, but didn't think to transfer. Lol! Thankfully the old computer is fixed too (thank you handy hubby) so I can still get things. But in the future I will remember to save all my created actions that I use on every layout!

And share them? What kind of actions do you use?

Sure I can share if anyone is really interested. Lol. I use a couple on every layout.

1. Trim papers - when I'm using a template and I drag in a piece of paper and clip it to a shape, I have an action that selects the shape, expands the selection a little bit (35 px), does an inverse selection and then deletes all the paper that it outside of my shape. The main reason I use this is because i save my .psd files and this drastically reduces the file size.

2. Resize finished .jpg - I'm sure everyone has a better version of this (like cheryl's or Sara's for free) but this just resizes my 12x12 .jpg down to 600x600px for posting to online galleries

3. Wave - this one I got from Amanda Resende that adds a slight wave to a separated shadow to make it look more realistic

4. Resize for Shutterfly - I use this action inside my .psd file to resize everything except the background down 97% so that I make sure nothing gets trimmed off in my Shutterfly printed books... or actually I've been using Blurb for the last couple of books, but same thing. :)

I do something similar to your #4 but I just kind of eyeball it. I never thought about making an action to do it. I really should look into actions to save myself time!

Also, for anyone interested, our Cheryl has a wave action. It's free on her Fiddle-Dee-Dee Designs blog!

Karen, that is not "bueno". Hopefully it's just the power supply specially w/ this heat some of them tend to go after some time and heat.

Yay for a new computer! Glad you are up and running again! I know that feeling! :)

Wait, what?!?! This sounds magical. So are you trimming after you've placed it where you want it? Or do you adjust the pattern first, and then clip it? Seriously, this sounds brilliant!

Oh no! I can't really offer any advice. My hubby is the computer guru over here...I'm pretty sure he already has his heart set on what he wants my next computer to be. I should ask him.

I'm so sorry about this, even if it was expected to happen soon! I hope you got a lot of good recommendations for a new 'puter!

I would love to have this one Karen.

Karen and others....I have an action that resizes to 600x600 or any other size (e.g. 700x700px) but none of them seem to have the option of making the final size under 250k. Am I missing something or is this still another step for all of you? as it is for me.

I still have to do that part separate because it's so specific to each layout.

Mine goes to the window where I choose the drop down to resize to 250. So, not totally automatic, but just one "input" step for me. This screen:

I guess that's the last manual step for all the 'resize' for web actions. Oh how lazy I can get!

After I place the paper and clip it to the shape, I hit ctrl and then click on the thumbnail of the shape (puts marching ants around the shape) then I click F3 which is the hotkey assigned to my action and it expands the selection and gets rid of everything outside that area. No need to keep paper that isn't even visible. I did it to a couple .psd files today that were about 500 MB and it brought them down to about half that size just by trimming the extra paper inside the layers.

Here it is if anyone is interested. I do have it assigned to F3 so if whatever that was as a default inside Photoshop is something you use, beware.

Maureen... sorry it took me a few extra days to remember to get this to you! @cookingmylife
