Ugh. I knew it was coming, but I was hoping to squeak a little more life out of my very old desktop, but yesterday my computer would try to turn on and then turn right back off. I turned it off and put it in time out, but today, same thing. sigh. So I'm going to see if it's the power supply first, but sadly I think I'm going to have purse up and get a new computer. Now I'm debating on buying components again and having my hubby build me a new one or just going to Best Buy and buying one that's ready to go.

The worst part is, I was going to take this afternoon off work to scrapbook. I guess THAT won't be happening.

Anyone else recently purchase a new PC desktop that can recommend a good one? I'm looking at an Alienware from Best Buy, but ugh they are so expensive. I have enough set aside in my savings for just this occasion, but I still don't want to spend the money. Lol.

oh no? Didn't you just put in solid state??? my antenna is twitching as my hubs wants to replace my drive with Solid State?
I actually have a beast we built from Walmart.com it is huge, and a few years old. Ibuypower Gaming Machine.
Buying a new one makes my heart quiver with nervousness.
Sorry about the afternoon not being able to scrap....that really is sad. :happyhug

Good memory @AnneofAlamo ! Yes, I just put in a bigger solid state drive in January because it was misbehaving then too. I also went back to Windows 7 from Windows 10 at that time. It fixed the problems for a bit, but I still think the other components are so old that they were probably the culprit to begin with. The power supply for instance is over 10 years old! :faint2 I'm really hoping that I can replace that and get a little more time out of the old faithful computer. :)

If I do have to build from scratch the good thing is I will have that new SSD harddrive to use. :)

No fun having a dead computer. Hope you can get something soon. I'm on a laptop but sometimes think I might go back to a desktop, they seem to last longer.

Oh no! I'm on a laptop so no advice but I admit I'll be watching this thread as DH has been "off handedly" mentioning a desktop for over a year lol.

But I've got to say, 10 years for the power supply is long! Hopefully replacing it fixes the problem so you get some more life out of this machine. But if not, it's so fun to get a new pc and realize how fast/powerful/etc the new one is!

Either way, new or rebuilt, you will be happy to have a working computer again. I am a big fan of building a computer as you know what goes into it and you already have the SSD to put in it. Good luck and hope you are soon up and running with a new computer.

Oh No!! My son just built himself a computer but I have no idea what parts he used.... even what you and Anne are talking about :giggle. Sorry I can't be of help! In January my computer went, it was old too, but hubby got me a new town and I have no clue what the guts are.

If your hubby can build you a PC with the specs that you want/need I'd go that route. A couple months ago we had to get a new one b/c it was just a matter of time of the old one crashing. We ended up just buying a refurbished one from Fry's Electronics it's a Lenovo and so far so good.

I don't know much about PC to really recommend one over the other...I've always wanted an Apple though.

No help as I use a laptop and don't think I will ever go back to desktop. I love the flexibility of taking my scrapping with me wherever I want to go. Best of luck in getting you something soon.

Build it! You'll love it more, it'll last longer, and you could probably get the same specs as the alienware for less price! My brother built our desktop, and I will never go back to a ready made one again. I love having exactly what matters to me, and not what the market dictates.
It was a whole $10 to put in the "reads all the memory cards" drive. And that's so magical!
And another whole $15 for the DVD/CD drive (we didn't upgrade to bluray).
You already have the solid state, so I would totally go build it!

Plus, building our own means I have USB 3's galore! And I adore that. Totally adore that. Especially when I want my Silhouette, my headphones, 2 EHD's and my mouse and keyboard plugged in. I love knowing I still have spares at that point!

That is no fun and I am in the same boat. Hope you get all sorted with something soon. I am definitely getting a desk top to replace my dying laptop.

You make a good point. I am so impatient that I don't feel like I could wait to have my computer "built" for me, but then you say this and my independent, "Fight the man!" streak kicks in.

And as you say, for Karen it really helps to already have the SSD! Heck, she could build it and have an extra SSD installed to make us all jealous! ;)

So in the end I went and bought a new computer from Best Buy. I priced out the components to build another one for myself but I couldn't even come close getting all the components as cheap as it was to just buy the computer already built, especially with the graphics card prices and having to purchase Windows 10. Yikes! This is the first time in 10 year that it wasn't cheaper to just build my own, so that is super weird, but I love the new desktop I bought. I picked it up on Friday night and spent many hours getting it set up and then of course had plans that kept me out of the house until Sunday afternoon. But yesterday I finished getting all my software loaded and all my Photoshop stuff loaded and set back up the way I need it and I actually was able to scrap on it! Yay! I'm back in business!

The title of your post is about the worst thing I can imagine. (Yes, I know people are more important but ...) A dead computer is one of my nightmares. So glad you have a new toy!
