So Garret and I have started taking the Financial Peace University at our church and I can tell already we are going to learn a lot! We are on the edge of being in big trouble financially and we are sooo hoping to get totally debt free and be able to move wherever we want in 4-5 years. Our teacher said that he got rid of 60,000 dollars of debt in two years after taking the class! I want that to be me!!!!

Have any of you guys taken this class or another one of his?? I would love to hear more stories of this working for people!!

Ooooh I have heard sooooo many good things about that program Crystal! They offer it at our church as well, but we haven't taken it yet. I'm interested to see how it goes for you. :)

I have also heard amazing stories from that class!

We didn't do Dave Ramsey but we did a very similar one before we got married - and it has kept us almost completely debt-free throughout our 13 years of marriage. My dad just read one of DR's books and has been working on getting their house paid off something like 8 or 10 years early - and he's totally on track to do it! I haven't heard a single negative thing from anyone who has been to one of his seminars or read one of his books.

We've been on the Dave Ramsey sauce for a couple years :) We LOVE him! (and we're almost debt free!! *except for the house*)

I've not done it myself because DH isn't willing to go along, so what's the point.

But good friends of ours have done it. They have managed to buy and pay off their business in a matter of 7 years. Also paid off all other debt besides their house, which will be paid off in about 15.

I have NEVER heard a single negative thing from anyone who has ever gone through this that I've known personally. Very cool that you guys have decided to take action! Good luck!

k, rachel, after reading that your dad is going through his book, i just hopped on over to amazon and DL'd it for my kindle. i'm excited to go through it. i do all the money managing around here anyway, and i could use a bit of a fresh perspective i think. thanks for the tip.

Well you know we're doing this as well at our church..we had week three yesterday. I've been a Dave Ramsey fan for a long while and I'm loving the class so far! We are approaching a more transitional time with DG's career and so we felt it was time to really put a lot of energy into planning and preparing for our future and I can tell this class is going to really help us do just that. I know that some don't necessarily like the Dave Ramsey approach or his faith-based fundamentals, but I have yet to hear a story of it not working for an individual if they work it. And that has me excited!

I love hearing all these good reviews and testimonials! Rebecca, G never ever would go either but I got his dad on my side and we talked him into it. IT was offered at such a discounted rate we couldn't turn it down and we really do need help! He definitely enjoyed our first class which totally surprised me and he opened up and talked way more than I thought he would! There were a few other husbands who were definitely not happy to be there.

That is so awesome for your dad Karah!!! I so want to do that too!! I am hoping to be debt free and then work up to doing something similar once we move to where we want to stay forever.

I hope you get to that place Rachel where everything is all paid off!! That is so awesome that you are almost there! I bet that feels so great and peaceful! I am eager to just feel peace in that area. *sigh*

It's been a long road Crystal. And hard. The best thing for us has been the more open communication about money and asking each others opinion (and permission) if we want to spend more than 25$ (I know that 25$ isn't a big deal to most...but it is for us) on anything. The cash envelope system has been amazing for us as well. We also knew we needed to buy a new car soon (Nate's 18 year old car with 275K miles on it was on deaths door). We were able to save enough to buy a great car with cash. If we didn't do that, we'd probably be all paid off by now. :) It works, but I can tell you it does take BOTH of you actively doing it.

K Rebecca, which one did you get? The step-by-step book (13.99)? I ran over and looked at Amazon too and would love to get this for DH. I think he's really like it, he's always yakking about money. We both like to spend, he likes to talk about it and I like to deny it. :)

It was offered years ago at our church too and I was really interested in it, but dh wasn't on board. He really doesn't want anything to do when it is faith based anyway.

It would be lovely to be debt free.

Bummer Debra. :( He's not super pushy with the Faith, but he uses Bible verses to get his point across at times. He's super funny mostly and makes us giggle!

leah i got the total money makeover. i like that it is focused less on the information and more on the action. for us, we have done a lot of things right with money since the beginnng of our relationship, so we are very blessed to be nearly debt-free (other than our home loan and one car payment that is very very new). we have paid off college, credit cards, and three car loans in the course of our marriage. we have a decent amount in savings. we've done the 'stuff'. but i tend to be a little lax when it comes to staying disciplined, and i will spend on random stupid stuff, like mcdonalds or jeans or whatever... you get the idea. anyway, i chose that book because i really want to refocus and zero in my perspective on financial decision making in daily life. it's not the big stuff that causes us problems so to speak. it's the little foxes nipping at the vine.

Yep, I've heard nothing but good things from his approach too. We sorta did this type of system before I'd even heard of Dave Ramsey... It was quite a shock to my hubby when we first started dating, but now he'll say that he's so happy it's how we roll. We are debt free except our house and we should have that paid off in about 8 years I think. My Dad actually is the one who taught me. He used to always do the budget for the month and then cash his check and paperclip the cash to these cards for each category, just like the cash envelopes, so my Dad was cool like that even in the 70s and 80s. :)

We love Dave Ramsey! I will say we don't agree with EVERYTHING, but if you stick to his basics...you CAN do it! We have been debt free (except house) for most of our 10 years of marriage - easier to maintain than it is to knock debt down! We love envelopes and saving cash for things before just buying. I didn't really grow up this way and have to admit - it's all my hubby for sure, but I have embraced it and couldn't imagine doing it any other way now! Some days I get bitter or jealous that others have more than me or that I have to work part time and some moms get to stay home, but the freedom of only having a house payment and utility bills is really nice! You can do it!!!
