My cousin spent 2 (maybe 3) years with the Detroit Lions in the mid 70's. He played during pre-season his first year since the NFL players were on strike. When they came back from the strike, he was cut from the roster but the coach liked him and kept him as a statistician. He left on his own and got a job in sales in the Toledo area but kept his ties to the organization. For 3 or 4 years in the early 90's, the family would go to the Thanksgiving Day game. My parents went to 2 of them. I attended 1 as I worked in a hospital at the time and my holiday to work was Thanksgiving (got Christmas/New Year's off though). Even though he now lives in Orlando, he is still a fan of the Lions. He prefers college football and has now become a fan of Florida, even having season tickets (both daughters went to school there, one undergrad, one graduate/medical school). He played football for Toledo and kept his ties to the team there as well... tries to come back every couple of years for a game in Toledo.
Relationships due to sports are definitely unique. Bruce is very good friends with several of the Toledo coaches that coached long after he was out of the program! He has kept in touch with several of his teammates all these years as well and he's been out of college 45 years.
