When I was growing up there was a local smoothie place that sold a “coldbuster” smoothie with a lot of Vitamin C. It was bursting with orange flavor and was quite delicious. I always wanted one when I got a cold but I don’t know if it actually helped with the cold.

We have a bunch of germs going around our house right now, most likely the common cold, and everyone is in the coughing stage. My oldest said last night that she’s never going to get better so I told her she needs to get more sleep, even if it means skipping out on late nights with friends or skipping early softball practice.

Do you have any “coldbusters” that work for you? What’s your recipe to get rid of coughs and stuffy noses?

whenever I'm around people with a cold etc or feel the beginnings of one I fight it off with the following immune system boosts:
  • no sugar (this reduces your immune system so that's the most important)
  • echinacea extract or tea
  • sage & rosemary tea - herbs fresh from the garden (do not have sage tea if you are breast feeding)
  • vit C & D3
  • Magnesium & zinc

Thank you Angela. I will refer back to this often. I grew up taking zinc & echinacea for a cold. We also have a friend who swears by spearmint tea for sore throats but I feel like the last spearmint I used was better than the recent one I purchased which is frustrating.

There are two things I love to use when I feel a cold coming on. My colds always start with a sore throat, so I start with a dose of Emergen-C which is a bit of hot water and a packet with a ton of vitamin C. Then for the itchy sore throat, I love Throat Coat tea, which has slippery elm in it and I sometimes add a dab of honey too. That always soothes my sore throats.

And double-triple-quadruple-yes to just get more sleep. That gives the body time to recuperate and heal. Not easy to tell a busy teenager though I know!

I forgot about Emergen-C! I love that stuff and it’s kid friendly because it tastes so good!

Your Throat Coat tea sounds amazing too. Do you buy it online or from a certain store?

I'm the same really. In some cases I also add some pain relief/cough medicine as necessary
Thanks Jennifer. I usually add in pain reliever/fever reducer once a fever sets in.

Both of my local stores carry it. You could also look for any tea with slippery elm in it... but it's not the most appetizing name, so it's sometimes only listed on the back with other brands. :giggle

At the first sign of a cold, usually a sore throat, I take 4 drops of oil of oregano in a bit of water, vitamin c, zinc and try to go to bed early. I haven’t tried the Throat Coat but will have to look for it. I also like lemon ginger tea with lots of honey in it.

Mmmm lemon ginger tea with honey sounds delicious. I’ve never tried drops of oregano but I have some so I might as well try it!
