In February, I made the mistake of congratulating myself on staying really healthy all winter, so the universe decided to punish me with back-to-back colds in the month of March. I was coughing and sniffling so much last night that I took a Nyquil. Today, my head is all fuzzy and I find myself staring into space with my mouth hanging open. In short, Nyquil turns me into a slack-jawed idiot for at least a day after I take it.

What's your favorite cold remedy medicine? Do you take OTC stuff or does it affect you like ti does me? Anything good for a cough that won't leave you dopey afterwards?

Haven't had a cold recently --- but allergies? Oh my. I have to take 2 meds year around.

One of them, generic version of Flonase, has been prescribed to family members for cold symptoms of congestion. It is OTC.

Ugh, me too! I had just commented that I was doing good at not catching the cold going around. And here it is.
My OTC is the Kirkland (Costco) or Up and Up (Target) brand stuff. They sell a day/night pack that is reasonably priced. I prefer Costco cuz it's cheaper. But both work well for me, without the zombie side effect.

I really don't do any of the night time medicines well. I usually buy DayQuil, or whatever the store brand equivalent is, and I take it day or night...nothing really affects my sleep haha. I also like Mucinex, or generic equivalent, for a cough.

Alka Seltzer Cold is my go to. I also use Airborne 3x a day when I have something like that. It will give you energy to get them because it's full of B vitamins!!!

some of the medicines work opposite on us (like in a Day/Night box, we take the Day ones at night because the NIght ones keep us up)

give the pharmacist my driver's license to prove I don't cook meth
Ugh. I hate that. Once we walked to the store, didn't have our id (just cash), and couldn't buy freakin children's cold medicine! And the stupid thing was it was a manual enter birthdate, and I am obviously above 16.

that's awful! And if Im in the store trying to buy children's cold medicine, it's probably late on a weekend and pharmacy is closed and I'm calling around to all the Walgreen's and CVS's, etc to see who has "real" Sudafed in a liquid. It really sux!!!! and is open past 10pm

The stupider thing was I bought some white wine for a chicken dish earlier that day with no id required. Seriously.

I think the difference is that they don't have to check your ID for liquor if you look over 21 but they always have to see an ID for sudafed because they have to record who is buying it.

I get that, except, they don't write down who's buying it anywhere? We went home, got the stinking license, and went back. They looked at my license, typed the b-day year into the computer and end of sale. Regardless, I hate that I have to jump through more hoops over cold medicine than anything else. Except maybe a plane ticket.

I shouldn't say it either but I almost never get a cold. However, I apparently got pneumonia 18 months ago and it lingered in different ways for quite a while. One thing the Dr said was not to take Mucinex because I was fighting my body's natural response to get those germs out with the lovely snot. That gunk has a purpose.

I have become a great examiner of snot...kind of like a Mom of a pre-schooler. Green? yellow? or phew! finally clear stuff.

LOL. Yes, it's icky but serves a purpose, I guess. :D My hubby also had pneumonia this year and it took him weeks to shake it off.

Oh no!!! And with the recent wind we've been having in the Valley, it's going around!! Unless I'm "dying" I avoid taking anything...just not a big a pill popper, but when I do it's usually the Wal Mart brand of the DayQuil and NyQuil.

I don't really know if it works or not, but I do find myself drinking a lot of warm tea with a bit of honey when I'm feeling icky...I think it's probably just a comfort thing.

Great idea! I think I'll make some now!
