Chocolate Class (nom nom nom)

@catschwartz thanks for the cookbook recommendation! I think my issue is that I need to know the Why and usually a cookbook doesn't tell you that info but it sounds like the American test kitchen book does. Yea! I'm adding it to Mt Amazon wish list.

I was going to recommend Appetite by Nigel Slater. I guess it is out of print and now just used. https://www.amazon.com/Appetite-What-You-Want-Today/dp/1841154709

It is interesting. He tells you different things to use and why. Not traditional recipes. Kind of fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants and experiment things. I really like it because I'm not a good one for following recipes.

What?! Chocolate class is a thing? That is soooo cool. I dont know anyone with that specialty, but I imagine there is a group. :drool

Side note: Anyone wanting all the chocolate, become my best friend. I dont eat it, so I will give you my share. :faint2

I had to think if I'd ever taken another cooking class other than the bread making one I took at the Community College a few years ago. I haven't! That bread making was really good and fun and just the right # of people for each station. Sadly... but probably better for me...I haven't made any of the breads since. I would certainly eat them all up!

@Danyale I can certainly be your BFF! but in reality the only chocolate I really like now is the Trader Joe's 1lb (yes ONE POUND) Belgian Milk Chocolate one. $4.95 and it's the best deal in town.

I almost feel that the smell of the chocolate might be too much for me in a class but one night with well behaved folk like us...lol..would be fun.

Oh just remembered...I did take a several night class in Thailand from an American woman married to a man from Hong Kong. Thai food with a Chinese twist. I still have the recipe sheets!

Kim , that sounds kinda fun...except for the fact that, if I was there? with the things you are saying these rude people do? I would have stopped the class, shouted a bit around and have them thrown out of the class!!!!! can stand people like that...

That sounds fun (except for the selfish people)! So I guess I should say, It sounds like you had fun! :)
I haven't taken a cooking class but I really should. I don't like to cook, and part of it is that I don't know what works with what, or what to substitute in order to make the dish still taste like it should (like, if I'm out of basil, could I use thyme? IDK!). So I need, like, a Science of Cooking class... something that covers the basics of both the ingredients and the techniques (like, "This is an onion and here's how to dice it" lol) and then explains WHY the basics work together in certain combos (like, "This is a tomato and here's how to make pasta sauce"). This is probably stuff other women learn cooking with their mom in the kitchen but my mother hated cooking. *shrugs* Too bad there isn't a place like that around here where I could take a class. It would be nice!

Here, that is called Food Technology and is taught in high school, you can even do an A level in Food Technology, Sarita did (she loves cooking) Now, the books are great, I have used books and at some point started experimenting with changing some recipes to my liking. These days... there is so much in YouTube, Nadia, one of Sarita's friends, is from a Bangladeshi family but she is in love with all things Korean.... she learn how to cook and now is rocking it....in You Tube. Sarita has been cutting my hair for about 3 years now...where did she learn? in You Tube...for people like us who have no money, or even more so like me , can't get out of bed much, learning on You Tube is perfect!
My mum cooks to this day for a living, she started when my dad retired, she cooks Arabic Food, both Sarita and myself love cooking...but there are some amazing step by step videos or phioto recipes around that you can l;earn so much with!!!!

@scrapsandsass my address is 1650....oh, that's not what you were asking?? well, this is awkward :backing

:rofl:rofl:rofl NOPE. she will have MY addresss!!!!!!!!!! :rofl:rofl :stash

That sounds wonderful ... except for the obnoxious people. They're everywhere.

I've not done anything like that before, but I would love to take a sushi making class!

we wanted to go to a Yo Sushi class ( a restaurant that serves in a conveyor belt) but it ended up being so expensive ...I got a book that comes in a box with everything to make it and rolls and stuff...but ended up never using it...I think we love the ritual of going out to eat it but we haven;t done in over 18 month so, I may start looking around You Tube for sushi!!!!

Yum, the title drew me in ... never taken a class, but I'm ace at eating it =)
:rofl:rofl:rofl yes!!!!!! I'm with you!!!!!

oh there are so many...depending in where in town you are.
WE live 5 minutes drive from Camden Town and used to have one there, they closed it in 2014 I think :(
There is one in the Eurostar station, St Pancras International, then there is Finchley Road in the O2 Centre which is a Shopping Centre/Mall. is a nice place there, I have never been to St Pancras because even though is 10 minutes drive, you have to walk a lot inside the station, difficult to park, etc... but I know there are Yo Sushis in the West End, I'm sure you can find at least 10 restaurants around London!!!! If he like Japanese, Asian, Wagamama is an amazing one, they dont do sushi, more like Ramen and rice and stuff like that but is far cheaper than eating at Yo Sushi, the Camden one ios amazing, I know Danica had some tummy problems when she ate in one near where they were staying..... but the one near us is great :)
Oh my.... now I am so hungry am gonna need to get out of here LOL

Love the sound of a chocolate class. My daughter would love it. She wants to be a baker when she grows up (14 now). She has taken 2 Wilton cake decorating classes and does a great job.

My niece completed culinary school in pastry. She made a human heart with veins, etc. for Valentines Day. Their school sculpted a dinosaur out of chocolate for a chocolate competition. Beautiful stuff and yummy too.

Haven't taken a chocolate class... but a cake decorating class! It was fun! I would love to try a chocolate one, and a cooking class one.

Karma will work it all out for the rude obnoxious people!

@MrsPeel Thanks so much for all the info. We had a special price deal at the St. Pancras Marriott a few years ago - it turned out to be their grand opening - so I doubt we'll be staying there again. But it's good to know there are lots of locations. Yes, we both like Wagamama and have them in the US too. :)

Sorry to bring back an "older" thread, but @catschwartz I got it from the library yesterday! :) I haven't had a chance to really look at it yet, but I'm already excited!

My cooking is more like by the seat of my pants and the taste in my mouth. I think I never make the same thing exactly the same twice. I'm follow the recipe and measuring challenged. I tend to use coffee cups and silverware from the drawer or my hand as a measurement. Then I taste - everyone likes my cooking so far but they know better than to ask me can you make that again? I am also totally bake anything or make sweets challenged. I would definitely Gail chocolate class.

Not a class, but one of the best cook books for techniques is the America's test kitchen Family cookbook one. They give you the tips, tell you why it is important to use butter, or that it doesn't matter if you use butter, things like that. Even though I had done a lot of cooking I still found their book great, and have liked everything we tried(unless i didn't like the food category in the first place)(and I don't work for them :)
Sorry to dredge up an old post but I finally got this from the library and I really like it! DH saw it on the table and starts skimming through it and then yells out "Where did you find this?! (cuz the big sticker with our library's name on it wasn't a clue?! lol) and he told me we must buy a copy for ourselves. So I ordered it from Amazon that minute. Yea for online shopping!

I was going to recommend Appetite by Nigel Slater. I guess it is out of print and now just used. https://www.amazon.com/Appetite-What-You-Want-Today/dp/1841154709

And I STILL have a hold for this with the library. :( I'm worried they can't find it cuz it's supposedly just on the shelf at a different location. What a bummer. Hopefully I come across it at a used book store!

I took a chocolate class at our local library. We were licking our hands and anything else that got chocolate on it!!!
