One of today's wacky holidays is Campfire Day and Night! So I'm wondering, do you like to sit around a campfire? Do you have a fire pit at your home? If yes, do you use it often? I do like to sit around a campfire. It brings back memories of week long camping in West Virginia. When Don and I moved to Missouri, I thought we'd have more campfires at home. We have a rustic fire pit and I have used it. I do like to cook over an open flame - from hotdogs to marshmallows, to roasted veggies and steak on a skewer. And s'mores are a tasty treat that are best "fresh" rather than store bought. I find the flame to be mesmerizing and have enjoyed hours just sitting and watching a fire. The quiet time with one's thoughts is pleasant. But - I am not a night person at all! Regardless of the season, my brain starts to turn off around 7pm - and I'm often in bed ready to sleep by 9pm. So I'd say one of the biggest barriers that prevents me from having more campfire time is my sleep cycle - I'm just not a night person and I feel campfires are best at night.
I would love to be able to sit around a campfire or firepit but I can't. I can't handle the smell from the smoke. My neighbors have a stone firepit and whenever they have it going I have to close my doors/windows so the smell doesn't get into my house. I think I am a lot like my mom. With her lungs (died from emphysema in 1996), she couldn't handle smells at all. I even stopped wearing perfume because it bothered her. Over time I became very sensitive to smells as well.
i love campfires! we do have a fire pit in our back yard. we just put it in this spring, actually, and have used it a few times this summer already. i would like to use it more, but it has been so blazing hot that it has to be 10 at night before it's even remotely cool enough to light a fire. so i'm hoping as the weather cools, we'll get more use out of it.
My neighbors tend to use theirs a lot in the fall. That's when the days are still nice but the nights get a little cooler here in Ohio. They usually have a big party and show an OSU game on the side of their garage if OSU has a night game in September. Fire pit always in use then!
Oh gosh! I do understand. I don't know the name brand, but there is a popular men's cologne - it makes me very nauseous. I have to vacate the area if someone is wearing it. And it does not smell bad, but something about it makes me feel sick. I do love the smell of fire. Yum. And I do light candles in the house, the scented ones. But I can only burn them for about an hour before the smells become overwhelming and downright irritating (making me feel like I can't breathe). Most hospitals I worked in had "scent/incense" policies as there is the realization that some folks react very badly to either the chemicals in whats producing the smell, or the smell itself. But on the other hand, some folks swear by aromotherapy and I do like many "smelling" things like sandalwood, frankincense, cigars, and patchouli, and many variations of basil (just in moderation).
I totally get this! And that is one reason I haven't had as many fires either....I'm already snoring haha! I do hope you and your family produce many happy memories around your new fire pit!!
I start coughing whenever I walk into the eye doctor's office. They always have a very strong scent burning or whatever when I go in. I've told them that maybe they ought to tone it down a little because some people can't handle strong scents. I do like to diffuse some essential oils but can only do so for about an hour at a time. And, I only use a couple of drops in the water so it isn't a strong scent. But candles, big nope. At one time (about 25 years ago) there was a brand that I could burn that wasn't extremely strong. But when I looked to see if it was still being made, I can no longer find it. And, the funny thing is back in my 20's during college and immediately after I burned incense all the time!
We have a fire spot, not a pit exactly, but a spot with chairs and a swing. We haven't used it in several years, other than to just quickly randomly burn stuff. I say every year we're going to use it more and we never do. It seems like it's just too hot in the summer and during the work/school year we just get too busy or go to bed too early to really enjoy it.
I only like to sit around a campfire when I'm camping in the mountains. We had a fire pit in our backyard and had it removed recently because it never got used.
I love to sit and watch a campfire! It's one of my favorite parts about camping. Once it's starts to get dark, we always have a campfire (unless the bugs are horrid) and everyone gathers around the fire and just chats and hangs out. It's great! We do have a fire pit in our backyard and we do use it quite a lot when the weather permits.
Love fire pits, sitting around them, and chilling. We are mostly earlier Spring and Fall nights. Summer is usually too hot, but if it works, then we will light it! Mostly, it's us and friends just chatting, watching the fire, relaxing time. Smores come out on occasion. Kids used to be more around, but as they get older, it's a little less.
I like to sit around a campfire, it's relaxing and the kids usually do smores- but I hate smelling like a campfire (hair/clothes!) We have a fire pit out at the lakehouse, which feels like a place that has to have one, but not at home and I don't think we ever will.
We're in Ohio, too, and we also do outdoor football game-watching parties! And yes, the firepits are a must for those! In the past we've always done them at my brother-in-law's house, because he has the firepit. Hopefully now we can host one as well. The only difference is, we are watching Notre Dame games instead of OSU.
I love watching camp fires! And I do love them in general... but don't always feel like messing with the pre and post stuff. We had one a couple of years ago that just would not die and we wanted to go to bed! We thought we had it out and then in the middle of the night, I see glowing orange out of the window. Yep... it had reignited! We have a fire pit here in Michigan but we also bought a Solo Stove a couple of years ago and we love it. Minimal smoke and super easy to start and put out. It also stays cool enough on the bottom that we can keep it on the deck (we do have a fireproof mat under it just in case). I think there will be a chance that we'll have both going this weekend when my husband's family is here.
Love a campfire, especially when camping. It's not real camping without one. LOL. We have more of a burn pile in our yard. LOL. We usually have a bonfire in the fall. We pile all of the dead sticks and branches from our yard on it. I would like a nice fire pit...but don't think we'll have one.
