Broken Bones?|Pad Patter 9.26

Oh my! This was painful to read! :giggle I broke my collarbone twice as a kid and in 7th grade a mean boy tripped me in the hallway and I broke my wrist. Of course, my writing hand too. My left hand writing during that time was barely legible!

Like @jenn macabre I hesitated to write that I've never broken a bone. Sending a gratitude message up to heaven! My eldest broke his arm playing soccer in his freshman year, and never said anything other than his arm ached that night. Day 2 we went to the doctor who looked at me suspiciously and even my son said 'but it didn't hurt much yesterday!!' This is the son who fell off a ladder at home last year and shattered his elbow, broke his other wrist and cracked his ankle. It was a horrendous mess and his wife had to do everything for him!

But on a sadder note, Dick just had lunch with a friend whose wife (about 65) has had many broken bones recently. It sounds like she has osteoporosis and her husband says they can barely find time in the day for her various medical appointments. I recall hearing sometime that diet sodas leech the calcium from the bones. Anyone recall this? She is a very heavy diet Pepsi drinker but still it makes me sad for her to have one bone then another give way. I know she was also depressed when she had to retire because of nerve damage in her arms. She was a beauty supply rep for some great companies and carried heavy boxes to clients for years. Dick and I count our blessing hearing stories like that.

I have heard that carbonated drinks effect bones. I'm not sure if I read it was diet soda or ALL sodas (i.e. the carbonation) that is the culprit. But either way, we avoid them here.

What an appropriate thread... my 8 year old son broke his arm just last week on the monkey bars at school. He's a champ and sporting an awesome blue cast now, but it was a rough day when they had to set it properly. It was one of those "wish it was me" moments for momma.

My oldest son has broken each of this arms (different times) but those are the only broken bones for the kids so far :)

I broke a few fingers and ribs in gymnastics when I was young but nothing requiring a cast. Ribs were pretty bad, because that breathing thing is painful :giggle

Yes, unfortunately it is carbonated drinks in general that causes calcium loss- not just diet ones. My mom did some of the research on this back in the 80s and I and my friends participated in a few of her studies to earn money. Women and teens are particularly susceptible. She was looking at caffeine as the cause for it - but I don't remember what exactly the results were for the studies. I'm sure we could look it up on google, or I could just ask her LOL

Personally I've broken toes several times and fractured a wrist during sledding (no cast required, but did have to wear a splint for a few weeks). DD3 had a severe compound fracture of both radius and ulna a couple of years ago when a back walkover went bad. That was not fun for either of us. She got through it and is fine now, but she vividly recalls how painful it was.

Like many others, I've also broken a few toes over the years. And I fractured my elbow 7 or 8 years ago when I tripped, fell forward, and extended my arm to catch myself. I wore a sling for weeks and had to go to physical therapy. It was so painful - I could not hold anything in my hand and I could barely move my arm. Showering and dressing were not fun. Luckily it was my left arm, so I could still write and go to work.

As a young adult, I was at a pool party one Friday night and got thrown into the pool where I smacked my baby toe up against the side of the pool and broke it. It turned black/blue almost immediately and swelled up but no one thought it was broken b/c I was still walking around (might have had something to do with the copious amount of beer I was drinking LOL). The next day we all went out boating and pulled up to an island beach where we played volleyball and ran in and out of the water. So guess what? The following Monday when I had it x-rayed finally, it showed two different fractures, so I broke it Friday night and then again the following day. Ugh....teen years LOL. I haven't broken any toes since :)

*Knock on wood*

I have never broken a bone. I do have a problem skull, lol, but it isn't broken (yet). :giggle

My grandma just broke her C2, C3, C7-T1 and had previously fractured two others (decades ago). That full-body brace is crazy. My husband broke his ankle almost 2 years ago, and we put a permanent ban on breaking any other bones in our house. :giggle

I broke my left arm/wrist when I was 7. I roller skated into a wall. I've broken a couple of fingers, and almost all of my toes. Other than that, nothing major. Each of my kids has broken a toe or 2 here and there. My almost 16 year old has a fracture in his back, that he is currently doing PT for. We aren't sure how it happened, but the 2 culprits are either football or the huge growth spurt he went through in 1 year. He went from 4'11 to 5'7 between June 2015 and March 2016. Luckily with the other 2 kids (KNOCK ON WOOD) nothing major broken so far. They are 19, almost 16, and 13 1/2. I think that's a pretty good track record! LOL

Eek. I have broken several, but the most painful was my tailbone when I was in highschool - I played softball and was sliding into home when a pretty big girl tackled me and well - things broke.

I kissed the frog....

I fell on a sheet of ice and broke my leg in 11 places. I was told I'd never walk again and if I did I'd be using a cane. It's been 7 years and while I still limp, I can walk (can't run), but I don't need a cane!

Although I've had multiple surgeries, none of them have been for broken bones

Shattered TWO bones in my right arm playing kick ball for a summer program when I was 10. Spent the whole summer in a cast.. it was a nightmare!
also broke all my toes at least 100 times as I was ballet dancer.

my kids, shockly haven't broke any bones yet.. my oldest has twisted her ankle a few times and hurt her wrist but nothing broke

not so much broken bones, but the absence of ligaments in my hips when I was born, the femur head outside the pelvis socket (which these days is very easily fixed but in the 50s meant paralysis or some really badly outcome in operations) I had 9 surgeries from birth to age 8. started walking aged 5-

Then I had a fissure fracture in (not sure if tibia or fibula) when I was 9-
I had a motorbike accident when I was 19.... can't remember exactly what, don't think it was a proper fracture but my right arm I had on a plaster for a few months, and I had a huge cut on my knee but didn't break any bones....if I'm not mistaken that was it..
