As a spin off from the Birthday Freebies thread this week & of my mum's upcoming birthday next week, I'm asking all things birthday!

What do you generally like to do for your birthday?
Any memorable birthday celebrations?
How do you celebrate family birthdays?

Not much to be honest as its winter here in July so generally don't go out much to begin with. Either a nice lunch out with some thrift shopping or a nice meal at home

Any memorable birthday celebrations?
A few spring to mind:
  • I used to go to stamp camps (I collected postage stamps growing up before scrapping took over) with other people aged I think maybe 9 to 18 for a week and most of the time they were in July during school holidays which happened to be when my birthday usually landed so there would be a celebration.
  • I was working at Pizza Hut and one of the managers got wind I was working on my birthday (I didn't mind at all) so decorated the store up without me knowing so all the customers knew and were wishing me happy birthday.
  • A not so memorable one or more specifically memorable for all the wrong reasons. I was away with my cousin & grandmother in Australia and we had stayed at this apartment that looked good in the brochures, was in a great location etc. Reality was the bed was broken & held up with bricks among other things. We had put up with it for the majority of our stay but enough was enough and we complained to our travel agent who managed to get us upgraded to a very bougie (for us) hotel for our last night. We were flying home on my birthday so we had a room service dinner to celebrate.
How do you celebrate family birthdays?
Generally depends - my mum and I we will try and have lunch at a nice cafe though sometimes it's just a nice meal at home - I'd say that's probably going to be the plan for my mum's birthday on Monday. Extended family in the past has usually been either a home cooked lunch at my grandmother's house (before she went into care) or a meal out. Due to being geographically spread out and work schedules it wasn't always on the day. We haven't quite figured out our new "normal" when it comes to family celebrations yet...that will come with time.

Go to breakfast or lunch with my parents then buy dinner and dessert to enjoy with my family that night while watching a movie of my choice.

Any memorable birthday celebrations?
My favorite birthday was probably at Disneyland. Can't beat that!

How do you celebrate family birthdays?
Dinner and dessert together, sometimes a movie or other activity.

What do you generally like to do for your birthday?
We usually have an extended family lunch or dinner together to celebrate.

My favourites are when we go to the Keg for dinner - love a good steak!

How do you celebrate family birthdays?
Dinner and dessert and the kids play pool and try to beat Grandpa at it!

What do you generally like to do for your birthday?
Not much during the day. Sometimes I'll take off work but mostly just a regular day.
Any memorable birthday celebrations?
The one that stands out is my 50th birthday. We went to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, which is such a lovely place with the nicest people. We had dinner at this amazing restaurant that is in an old, elegant villa that used to be owned by Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. It was absolutely gorgeous and you eat on this patio that overlooks the town and the ocean. The food was wonderful and there was a band that strolled around playing gorgeous Mexican ballads and other music. Just magical.

We always take the birthday honoree out to dinner and then back home for the cake of their choice and gifts.

I like to leave the country.

That way I can pretend it is not happening. :agree

Bonus that the weather is always crap here on my birthday, plus my allergies bad. Can't swing it next year for my birthday though, and already annoyed about that :eyeroll

Sometimes we go out to dinner, but this year I did absolutely nothing and it was glorious :)

My 40th was pretty memorable. I loved all the fun things people did to make me feel old haha. Oh to be 40 again lol

How do you celebrate family birthdays?
Usually going out to dinner wherever they choose

What do you generally like to do for your birthday? Whatever I feel like that day.

Any memorable birthday celebrations? Not a celebration but in 2023, I spent my birthday in the hospital waiting to get released after heart surgery 2 days earlier. It was supposed to be one night in the hospital but ended up being 2. But, I did have pizza for dinner with my cousin that came to stay with me for a couple days post op and the cousin that was keeping Peyton while I was in the hospital.

At this time I do plan to have a memorable birthday this year. I will be on a bus coming home from a trip to Vermont... on my 70th birthday. I hope to be pampered all day by being the first one off the bus at all comfort stops whether I'm in the front of the bus or the back. Is that too much to ask????

How do you celebrate family birthdays? I don't. Both parents are gone. No children.

I treat myself to whatever I want for the entire month.

I remember my 21st pretty well because my mom arranged a surprise dinner at a restaurant with the help of my boyfriend and I was truly surprised. My whole family and two more of my friends were there.

I ask family members what they want to do and we do it. My husband wants to ignore his birthday. My oldest loves to order funny custom cakes and have as many people gathered together as possible. My middle kid wants the whole family to do something together. My youngest doesn't care much about birthdays, but appreciates cake and money added to his Steam (game) account.

What do you generally like to do for your birthday?
Nothing, I like to do nothing. I used to not care if I worked or not on that day, but the past few years, I just have taken it off from work.
Any memorable birthday celebrations?
I spent my 4oth in Vietnam. So that was quite wonderful.

We really don't do anything that exciting, although at midnight we call the person up and sing happy birthday to them! They have learned to stay up now.

What do you generally like to do for your birthday? Usually nothing. Call me to wish me a happy birthday, but I don't want any kind of party.

Any memorable birthday celebrations?
For my 60th my BFF and I went to Disneyland. And for my 70th I booked a last minute (14 days out) solo cruise on the Disney Wish. Repeated that last fall, but took my granddaughter (27) with me and sailed on the Disney Magic. Am going to do it again in December with my son, DIL, granddaughter and her S/O ... sailing on the Wish again.

How do you celebrate family birthdays? Now that the GKs are older I usually invited them, their s/o and siblings to dinner at their fav restaurant and give them a gift or some cash.

Rene, I hope you have a great trip AND are first off the bus at the rest stops!

These days, Publix cake with my mom, husband, brother, and son. A few years back, my mom got me the Monsters Inc cake from the Publix bakery even though it was way too big for just us and I had cake for breakfast for days.

Any memorable birthday celebrations?
In 2021, we went camping in a dark sky preserve. We stopped at Publix on the way up for cupcakes and kept my son up until slightly past his bedtime so I could photograph the Milky Way. We walked just far enough down a path from the campground that the trees weren't blocking the horizon, I got greeted by an owl (which is a big deal in my family as my great-aunt, who was like an extra grandma to me, LOVED owls), sat my kiddo in a camping chair, and I took all of 5 photos - 1 test shot, 3 to stitch in a panorama, and 1 that was a more standard shape in case I didn't want a panorama. Then we went to bed. I head bobcats between me and the bathroom at 4am so I waited until sunrise, when the deer did NOT obstruct my access. As we were packing up, I saw a rare bird I really wanted to photograph (a crested caracara) in the empty campsite across from ours and I got some great photos. When we got home, my mom ordered me a metallic print of the pano which hangs over my desk.

I also did Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party in 2016 when I was pregnant with my son. One aunt & uncle got D & I tickets, while another set got me the PhotoPass downloads. My husband went off with my uncle to ride rides while my aunt & I waited to meet characters and it was so magical. I only wish everyone had been with me when Aladdin & Jasmine sang to the prince in my belly... (Husband was getting a Dole Whip and the rest of the fam was just entering the park; I got there early for Jungle Cruise before it closed for the event.)

Red Robin! My brother and I are 3 days apart so we apply my free birthday burger promo to his more expensive one. They also send a free kid's meal for my son's birthday now too. Last year, we took my mom to her favorite local Thai restaurant.
