What do you generally like to do for your birthday?
These days, Publix cake with my mom, husband, brother, and son. A few years back, my mom got me the Monsters Inc cake from the Publix bakery even though it was way too big for just us and I had cake for breakfast for days.
Any memorable birthday celebrations?
In 2021, we went camping in a dark sky preserve. We stopped at Publix on the way up for cupcakes and kept my son up until slightly past his bedtime so I could photograph the Milky Way. We walked just far enough down a path from the campground that the trees weren't blocking the horizon, I got greeted by an owl (which is a big deal in my family as my great-aunt, who was like an extra grandma to me, LOVED owls), sat my kiddo in a camping chair, and I took all of 5 photos - 1 test shot, 3 to stitch in a panorama, and 1 that was a more standard shape in case I didn't want a panorama. Then we went to bed. I head bobcats between me and the bathroom at 4am so I waited until sunrise, when the deer did NOT obstruct my access. As we were packing up, I saw a rare bird I really wanted to photograph (a crested caracara) in the empty campsite across from ours and I got some great photos. When we got home, my mom ordered me a metallic print of the pano which hangs over my desk.
I also did Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party in 2016 when I was pregnant with my son. One aunt & uncle got D & I tickets, while another set got me the PhotoPass downloads. My husband went off with my uncle to ride rides while my aunt & I waited to meet characters and it was so magical. I only wish everyone had been with me when Aladdin & Jasmine sang to the prince in my belly... (Husband was getting a Dole Whip and the rest of the fam was just entering the park; I got there early for Jungle Cruise before it closed for the event.)
How do you celebrate family birthdays?
Red Robin! My brother and I are 3 days apart so we apply my free birthday burger promo to his more expensive one. They also send a free kid's meal for my son's birthday now too. Last year, we took my mom to her favorite local Thai restaurant.
