We're in the middle of a deep freeze. Overnight temperatures are plunging to -40C with the wind chill and daytime isn't much better (-35C with the wind chill). Train and bus terminals are staying open overnight to give the homeless some place to stay relatively warm. We've been staying indoors and when we do go somewhere, we make sure we take hats, gloves, boots, down-filled jackets, car blankets with us to survive just in case of car trouble. It is so cold our garage door-opener isn't able to work.

Do you get some really deep freeze periods during winter? How do you survive them?

It's only getting down around 30 degrees F here in Fredericksburg, Virginia, lately, but as someone who spent the first 29 years of my life in southern California that is barely survivable. ;) But it even gets down to single digit temperatures here occasionally. What I most want to do on the coldest days of winter is wrap myself in a big afghan and read, read, read!

We usually have fairly mild temps in the winter, in the 30's and 40's but this week will dip down to the low 20's during the day. That's cold enough for me. After our big snow storm, now the rain has come and all the snow is heavy and wet now. Not looking forward to freezing snow on the roads. The city still hasn't plowed our street so if it freezes, it will be tricky to get out. I'm staying home today.

We had a cold snap, with a high in the 50's on Friday, but today will be a high of 65 and low of 40 today. Tomorrow brings more rain and higher temps. Mid 70's during day and high 50's at night for those couple of days, and then back to 60's during day and low 50's at night.

Just reading about the extreme temps makes me hurt. Just having the cold snap Friday night and being out to dinner, it was hard on my bones! LOL Hope y'all stay safe and warm!

The temps today aren't terrible, but they are supposed to drop by mid-week ... highs of 4 and 5 (Fahrenheit) above and lows 8 & 9 below zero.

We got about 3 inches of snow yesterday and it's been snowing here since mid-morning ... we've gotten about 8 inches today - it's pretty ... but I do hope it stops soon!! LOL!

We had a cold snap Friday and Saturday. It got down to about 18F, with highs in the 20's. It was in the mid 40's today and supposed to stay that way until the end of this week and then back to the teens again. I hate it with everything I have. I just want to get under a blanket and not move! We usually get a few days with single digits and below zero towards the end of January, beginning of February, but not a lot of them *knocks wood*. The biggest issue we have is with freezing pipes, especially to my laundry room. We have replaced those pipes more times than I care to remember.

Hot here but heatwave of last week has thankfully gone and we have some cooler weather. Last week temps over 100F with humidity. Just too hot to do anything. Today I'll finally get in and make my Christmas cake which has been sitting with fruit marinating in rum for last week. Just could not bear thought of oven on for afternoon.... Would love to see snow and a white Christmas really sounds a dream :-) Anyone want to swap?

Yup, we're in northern Indiana and currently a victim of lake effect snow so it definitely gets cold here! It's supposed to be especially frigid by the end of the week and we have around 8 inches of snow with more coming tonight.

We stay inside with blankets & sweatshirts & pray for Spring! :giggle

Wow! @HeatherB that is a deep freeze! Last year I think the coldest it got to was about 2F & everyone was talking about it. Right now we are in the 40-50 range during the day & 30-40s at night. Not too bad.

We've had a cold snap for the past few days too. It got down to about 10F and we had snow steadily since Thursday evening. Luckily it hasn't been too heavy, about 8 inches and its finally stopped and warmed up a bit. I went out on Friday to get groceries but the roads were so slick that I haven't been out since! Tomorrow, though, I have to go out again so I'm hoping the roads have been plowed and sanded!

I do feel bad for you guys in the deep freeze but meanwhile its the hottest December day here in 11 years - going off a Sydney newspaper - we must have opposite extremes!

If it gets really cold here they will cancel school... but it has to be in the -20 F windchill range for them to even consider it. A couple years ago they canceled due to cold since it hadn't happened in a long time... but then we kept getting those super low wind chills so they stopped canceling school. My son, in public school, is more likely to have school canceled than my daughter, in private school.

Layers are key! My daughter (15) makes me crazy, as she at times won't even wear a coat and wears her uniform skirt with bare legs. But today, she actually wore a coat and put on sweats under skirt for her commute to school. Progress. My son (16) lost his coat last week right before the cold snap began. Not pleased. So he got an early Christmas present of a warm, but inexpensive coat (with 2 day delivery thanks to Amazon Prime)... if he wants something nicer, he'll need to save for it himself since he lost a really nice coat.

What is it about teens?! My 13 year old tries to get away without wearing a jacket but even he has been wearing a jacket with our frigid weather these days.

Oh no! I was amazed to see how many jackets were in the lost-and-found at school.

Another Aussie here in the throes of HOT weather! Last week was terrible and then we had a short break but today it was stinker outside! We had the fan on last night and it looks like it will be the same for tonight.

They predicted 32C for us today but it got to 35C it is 4.44pm as I write this and it is still hot! bleh!! Looks like more hot weather for the rest of the week, but a chance of some thunderstorms as well. Last week we had a storm three afternoons in a row with hail each day as well, only small stuff though, thank goodness!

We are fairly cold here - gale wind warnings at the moment. Real Feel is in the single digits. But nothing like what you are feeling @HeatherB Goodness. I would do everything possible not to have to leave my house. As it is I walk around me house with a scarf wrapped around me 50 % of the winter time ... I need to feel cozy and warm. Stay safe!

Thankfully we never get that cold during winter and anyway we are "enjoying" summer now, although with the heat and water restrictions enjoying may be deemed to be a stretch!

We have finally started to get winter temperatures here in Ottawa. It's -15C here today, but bright and sunny. I grew up in Waterloo, Ontario. It's an hour outside of Toronto. When I moved to Ottawa, everyone told me the winters would be worse. One person described it like this, "most of the time, It'll be like what your used to. But there's two weeks, usually around the end of January where you just want to die." That's about right, there are probably two weeks where we are below -30C every day (not including windchill). The thing I've learned from French Canadians (they are way better at dealing with winter than with English Canadians, even when we all live in the same city) is to embrace it. Buy snowpants, and good boots. Go snowshoeing, skating, cross country skiing. Do some tire-sur-la-neige (you pour hot maple syrup on clean snow and roll it around a popsicle stick.) Drink lots of warm drinks, and eat homemade mac and cheese and french onion soup. And watch this (from Rick Mercer Report, in English) while you're waiting for the cold snap to end:

Montreal used to not cancel anything - we would get snow so high it reached the roofs of houses on the south shore. Everyone just tunneled out - the kids had school. We would also get up on saturday in a raging blizzard and skate our car to hockey practice with the kids.

I guess global warming has given us some respite and that last few winters have been temperate with only three feet of snow in my front yard by february.
This weekend it is supposed to drop to -23C which is around -10 F - we already have ten inches in the front yard...

yes, we do...and worse of all? the windows here have gaps so there is a draft that makes up spend so much money in heating.... I don;t really leave my bed much these days so I am fine...but big fur coats, lots of gas heating and warm drinks and duvets!!!!
