I have never visited but deep in my soul my spirit wants to live there. Lol. How is it? Tell me all the things....lol Weather. Food. Expenses. Dish it out.
I am not Hawaiian but I’ve been to Hawaii twice and loved it. The shave ice, fresh pineapple, sunrises and sunsets are the best; no air conditioning is the worst.
We’re currently on holiday on Maui! It’s really beautiful but quite busy. We’re loving the temperature right now, about 78-82 in the day and about 70 at night. Most days there’s a bit of rain but not enough to stop you from doing any activities. There’s lots to do - cycling, kayaking, snorkelling, diving, surfing, paddle boarding, kite boarding, etc. apart from just chilling. The biggest downside to Hawaii I would say, is how expensive everything is here which is understandable when you realize almost anything you buy has been imported. Property prices seem crazy too. We have been here before but not for a few years and I don’t remember it being quite so expensive in the past.
Hawaii was my first duty station. Spent almost three years on Oahu. While I did love it, for me I go a bit of island fever...one could drive around the entire island in a day. That makes it difficult to explore somewhere new...you reach a point where you literally have been to every spot on the island. It was expensive then, and I imagine even more so now, to live there and fly to-and-from there. Many things have to be shipped in via boat or air (as opposed to train or truck). Housing costs hurt many military members...especially the junior enlisted who did not/and do no make a lot of money. For me, I am incredibly happy I got to live in Hawaii for a few years and experience the Aloha Spirit and tropics. But for the long term, I prefer a continent to an island. And I prefer all the seasons. I am a winter babe and find lots of beauty in winter.
I've never been there and would like to visit someday. A high school friend did live there for several years back in the late 70's or early 80's. She said she enjoyed it but it was so expensive. She was quite happy to move back to Ohio and be closer to family when she got divorced.
My cousin lived in Hawaii in the late 60s (Peace Corps) and she ended up with island fever and was happy to get back to the mainland when her time was up. I'd like to visit some day.
I would love to visit there someday. I actually had an opportunity to move there shortly after I graduated from college for work, but I knew I couldn't be that far away from my family here. @yellowpeep is from Hawaii though! She could tell you all the good stuff about it I'm sure.
