This is the fourth of a set of tutorials intended for beginners getting started using Affinity for digital scrapbooking. The basic process for using text is the same for Affinity Designer, Affinity Publisher, and Affinity Photo. In this example I'm using Designer. There are two main text tools in Affinity: Artistic Text - I use this for titles and dates. Frame Text - I use this for all my journaling. To create the title select the Artistic Text tool. Click on the document and then start typing. Notice the context tool bar. The 3 most commonly used text formatting tool I use on here are a: font type b: font size c: font alignment. When you click on the font type drop down box you will notice 4 tabs All - all the fonts currently installed Recent - your most recently used fonts - perfect if you use the same fonts regularly and want to find them easily. Used - all the fonts currently in use on the document Favourites. In the font list there are some heart shapes next to each font name. Clicking on this will toggle it on and off (empty is off, solid is on). If switched on this font will show up in the favourites list. I have many fonts in my favourites list, including Heather Joyce's fonts. Heather sells at the Lilypad and her fonts are awesome. For my title text I have chosen The Toffee Chip font by Heather Joyce. For your journaling select the frame text tool and draw a rectangle for where you want your journaling to go. For my journaling text I have chosen The Heather A font by Heather Joyce. The font can be recoloured using the color tab. Sometimes I like an outline only style for my titles. To do this set the outline colour. Then set the fill colour to empty. Adjust the outline thickness via the stroke tab. There are lots of options in this tab you could play with including a dotted outline, or using a brush for the outline. Affinity Publisher Only Because Affinity Publisher is used for desktop publishing of layouts, pamphlets and books etc it has a lot of powerful text tools. I always use publisher when I know I'm going to include lots of journaling in my pages for this very reason. Select the text frame and then go to the character tab. Here you can adjust many features including leading, character spacing, and text angle. I regularly adjust the line spacing, here I have increased it slightly so the text is less crowded. The paragraph tab enables the adjustment of the spacing between paragraphs, and the inclusion of indented first line etc. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
