After watching the video that Katie picked on The Digi Show a few weeks back (a guy who shot one second of video everyday for a year), I realized something about these projects. I work hard at trying to make sure I capture something different everyday but as I watched the video it hit me that this may not be the best way to approach things. For instance there are several days that are shot from inside a hospital, and it really hits home just how much a part of his life that hospital were for those days, vs if he had gone and shot other parts of his day. And the other thing I realized that there were several days throughout the video that he recorded games of Settler's of Catan. It just emphasizes that that's a game that they enjoy enough to play over and over. I sometimes get to feeling that my life is too mundane or boring to do projects like this (lol...doesn't stop me from trying though), but it hit me that if our lives are really mundane or boring (which they probably really aren't), shouldn't we be capturing those moments anyway. Isn't it amazing that in this digital age we can really show what our lives are like on a day to day basis, and not just capture the big events? He also makes comments that after shooting the same thing (i.e. him at his computer) for several days it motivates him to get up and do things. How great is that???

It really has me wanting to attempt P365 again, and not just my mishmash of PL that I've been doing this year (which is fine...it's what I needed to do this year to make it work for me).

If you haven't seen the video I'm talking about it's here:

I think that is an interesting topic for discussion. I know it seems like most of my days are the same, but there may be one thing that is different or stands out each day. I haven't been keeping up with PL because it seems like there isn't anything going on in any given week, and there are only so many pictures I can take of Kennedy or the dogs, but it is a good thing to think about and contemplate how to dig deeper.

I think that is an amazing project he took on, and I was totally thinking that it would be so neat for future generations. But I guess that is also why we scrap. :) It is just a different medium.

Thanks for sharing that!

I like what he says at the end, about doing the video not to show people what his life is like but so that he can remember what his life was like over the years.
When I started doing PL I realize how many day to day little things we were missing by focusing on recording only the big events in our lives. I love to look back and see some of those little things. There are days when all I have is a picture of a sunset or maybe a school lesson for that day, or a drawing of my girls. But that is ok, it's our life and I love it!! Thanks for sharing this, Sarah!!

Um yesterday I did a layout of pics my hubby took while sitting in the carwash, lol

I love the mundane, the everyday ordinary. Those moments are precious and tomorrow is not promised so document today! Who cares if your life is boring and monotonous, some people would kill for that. Just snap a pic, and talk about your thoughts for that day, that moment. Don't compare your life with anyone else's, they haven't walked in your shoes and you don't know where they have been either and what they are glossing over to make their albums/life look perfect on the outside. Let it all go, you'll be happier and your albums will be a better reflection of your real life.

Just my thoughts, lol

I agree. I've always scrapped the everyday...even years ago as a paper scrapper. I think it's so important when documenting our lives. What I didn't get until now is that capturing the same thing over and over could be so beneficial (especially in a PL/P365 kind of format).

On a similar note, does anyone remember who it was that talked about doing P365 as a diptych. I'm totally fascinated by that idea. I can totally see where having a closeup shot along with an overall shot, or a before and after kind of thing would tell a much better story. And it would also solve the what if I have more than one thing I want to document on a certain day.

I love that too, the same thing over and over. I am such a believer in Ali Edwards for that reason. She doesn't try to reinvent the wheel. She captures her sitting and working many times during her week, I love that.

wow that video is awsome and truly love the idea...also truly understand what you're saying! I've done P365 for our girl the year and will end on Dec 19th...her 2nd birthday. I need a new idea for next year too!! And just love the everyday life...my original plan for her 2nd album was to photograph her and her daily life & stuffs. I did that the first few weeks, but somewhere along the way...and I honestly just recently notied, is that she is ALWAYS in the picture!! LOL...and it wasn't just about her, but about her life...our life! So maybe that is my goal for next year... her 3rd album needs to have a whole diff twist on her 2nd year! Simply cause I can imagine people (&myself) to get bored of just seeing her! hahaha

I often get burned out on project life, but every time I do, I go back and look at my past pages, and I quickly realize how much I love capturing those every day moments. They seem boring and mundane when you are writing about them, but after time, they become a time capsule. This is why I can't ever give up on my project life- no matter how behind I get!

Thanks for sharing that video and your thoughts, Sarah. So, so true. It was perfect perspective for me as I am gearing up for my 3rd year of PL in 2013. I was worried about keeping it fresh...and now I feel much less concerned about it.

That was Heather Hess... I love that format. She posted a bunch of those on Facebook I think.

Great discussion! I love documenting the everyday, and this is probably why I'm much more into Project Life than a P365 approach, and why I add so much journaling to my album.

I am doing P365, but I include journaling for each day. I love it when my boys go and get the album from last year and sit and look at it or they ask me, "can you put this is our 2012 book?" I am not sure what direction I am going to go for next year, but I will definitely be documenting the everyday life I have this year and last.

That was a cool video and perspective too!

Thanks, Karen. You think I would have remembered that LOL...I was pretty sure it was somebody here, but for some reason I couldn't figure out who. I'm really trying to figure out a way to make that approach work for me, and how to deal with it if I miss a day...that's my big fear with setting goals and why I'm approaching PL the way I am this year. I definitely tend to have an all or nothing attitude toward things like this.

This is my 4th year doing project 365. Only this year I went project life format and I am really enjoying more journaling on my pages. My kids do sometimes take out my other years and look at that particular day to see what we were doing like 3 years ago or 2 years ago on that particular day. I'm not so sure I could keep up with a video each day but a photo each day is doable on my iphone. For days that I have more going on I will try to include that in my journaling and I will reduce the photo to fit in the little box.

PL has really changed my outlook on documenting our life. I love that I can go all out or simply just add photos if I need to. Some weeks the photos speak for themselves. Other weeks I embellish my pages like crazy. It's flexible and ever changing...just like our life ;-)

Also, you may not appreciate your video now, but in 20 years it's priceless. I've been taking my 22 year old 8mm tapes and down loading them in my pc to edit them and copy them to dvd's. I have been having a ball going through them. 22 years ago we thought we were nuts to buy that camera, because we couldn't afford it. Now I realize we would have been nuts not to. Those tapes are now priceless.

WOW! Thanks for sharing this! I really need to start sticking with daily pics/etc. I also need to pullout my video camera more often. :(

Thanks so much for sharing! That is a really cool idea. I find myself trying to make my pages more interesting, and feeling like a lot of the time what I write is boring, but when I look back, it makes me remember our lives, which is what matters.
