So this month's Inspiration Challenge made me remember a few years back when we were studying the Baroque art period in our homeschool. To help them remember artists and their paintings, we sometimes gave them new names. They renamed "Lord, whither goest thou?" by Annibale Carracci as the "What's Up?" Jesus. Have you ever renamed things to help you remember them?
The "What's Up" Jesus might be the best painting title I've ever heard. And I took art history classes! Sorry to say, right now I can't think of anything I've renamed cuz I'm too busy thinking about What's Up Jesus.
I can't say that I've actually renamed anything per say... maybe nicknames though but I guess that's sort of like renaming, isn't it? lol!
Not to get too political but everything is getting renamed covfefe at the moment - may be the most versatile word yet! Whenever we see an unusual name on the tv, we promptly rename our eldest son (normal name Matt) He is currently known as Stoffel VonWray (vaguely after a F1 driver - it does suit him though!)
there has to be a backstory to that! that's hilarious - DS gets everything from the in-laws fam, i have no idea why they have to call him fred or eggbert or whatever instead of just saying 'hi byron' everytime- it's not amusing to us after the millionth time to see him get annoyed by it and they wonder why they aren't greeted merrily! As for renaming in our house, it's mostly just based on stuffed up spelling or mispronounced words or misheard lyrics - we rename songs a lot - like the unofficial Aussie anthem, Waltzing Matilda, DS used to sing as 'we all sing, matilda', for some reason that stuck. I can't think of anything else specific atm
I rename things. There's a corner nearby with a lot of stores that are the same as in Utah. We call it St. George west. (The southern town in Utah, and Vegas is west-ish). I call otter pops 'freezies' because that's what they were called for me. I'll have to see if I think of others.
I add to names to remember. Like I know a guy, his name is Jeff... and I always forget it! Always... So, now he is Firefighter Jeff, and I can successfully remember his name, lol! I've got Slaughter House George, Principal Tracey, Soccer Sue, and so many more. It sounds like a kids cartoon in my head. Places are the same way... Blue Rock Band is a restaurant on the rocks near the shore, that has bands at night....
Lol on the the What's Up Jesus! It's perfect! Where I work there are a lot of people in my building that I know their face, but I don't work directly with them, so I don't always know their names. There are a couple of guys that I do work with who are ruthless nickname givers. It's so bad that when I DO interact with someone new, I almost greet them by their nicknames... but they aren't always the most appropriate. We have one guy who is a vegetarian, so his nickname is rutabaga, there's another guy who has a firefighter light on his truck, so he's "fire marshall bill" but his name isn't even Bill... but if I ever talk to him, I have to keep saying... don't say Bill, don't say Bill.
This post reminded me of a funny article I read a while back. I wish I knew it in high school! "How To Recognise Famous Painters According To The Internet" (There are some bad words there, so be careful!)
We have a local Donut shop next to a Taekwondo studio. The donut shop just says DONUTS on the sign, so I always call it Taekwon-donut. It always makes me giggle, but my husband is NOT amused. He will always say-- You mean Donut Palace??? It is our favorite place to get Saturday morning breakfast pastries for the family, so my DH even has an excel spreadsheet printed up with each family member's favorite order plus alternates if the shop is out of our first favorite. I guess when you are ordering 15 donuts, it is helpful to have what kinds and how many of each one written down.
Of course! We have funny names from when the kid's were little and mispronounced things. Or just nick-names. Chick-O-lay is Chick-fil-A Black Juice is Coke (or diet Coke) pee-zee is pizza And we still go Shop-Ping at Planet Kro-gar to buy brock-o-lee
Did you hear today is National Doughnut Day? Free doughnut at Dunkin' Doughnuts and maybe other places too.
We do this too! And you are right, it is hard not to say the incorrect name. In our neighborhood, we know most people by their dog's names.
I think most people do this...I do but nothing is coming to me at the moment. My daughter's name is Mattisen. She has this friend that has called her Tanya since 6th grade. I picked her up one day from school and I kept hearing this boy calling out "bye Tanya!!" and I elbowed her and was like Javier is telling you bye. LOL! She also calls him Jose. It's pretty funny.
OMG....Whats Up Jesus....has me cracking up LOL. We rename things too. If we say them out in public sometimes people look at us strangely b/c they can't figure out what the joke is. For years (many many years ago) when I was obsessed with Chris Isaak's music, my husband called him Upchuck which cracked me up. The joke was b/c he hated his music, hated that I played it over and over and if it came on the radio in the car, he was not allowed to speak during the song, which I would be singing along with at the top of my lungs LOL.
There are two St. Martin's churches near me. One is St. Martin's in the Field...lovely name. The other is just St. Martin's but to me it's St. Martin's in the WaWa because it's across the street from a WaWa or was. Whatever the new name for that store, people still call it WaWa as a generic name unless they're new to the area. Then they must think I'm nuts.
That's funny! We have a shopping center that is where a mall used to be (they tore it down). All the old times still call it by the mall name.
I add nicknames to remember people. I met a new person the other day whose name is Alisha. Had to ask her name about 3 times cause I couldn't remember it. So I named her A lease, A dog. A leash A. NOW I remember her name!! Just have to remember to NOT call her a dog!!!!!
