I never got mine cleaned and it was hanging the basement for years. A couple of years ago we were cleaning and my hubby convinced me to donate mine to Goodwill. I have felt a little regret a couple of times, but then again, I don't know what i would have done with it. I do wish I had made baptism gowns out of it, but I had a hand me down outfit that my hubby was baptized in and that was important to his mom, so my boys both wore that.
I got married in a navy blue Old Navy cotton summer dress since I was 20 weeks pregnant. I don't have it anymore so I must have donated it to Goodwill or something after our daughter was born. I don't think I ever wore it again but since it was only $40 or so I didn't feel bad donating it, either. Sorry that I can't be any real help! I think my mother might have my first wedding dress in her closet somewhere but she's moved twice since then so I'm not holding my breath.
Would you believe I received my Country Woman magazine in the mail yesterday, and there is an article in it on what to do with your old wedding dress?? One lady made necklaces from the lace for all the girls in the family, she had granddaughters by then. Another lady made head bands, and they were really pretty!
My mom paid to get mine cleaned. That was almost 18 years ago! I don't even know how much she paid. I still have it sealed and in the box. I'm just now beginning to think about what to do with it & if I want to open the box and peak at it. My teen girls might like to look at it. I really don't know what we'll do with it.
If I remember correctly, my sister had her dress cleaned and vacuum sealed in a box after she married in 1988. But I have no idea whether she still has it. I'm guessing her daughter, age 25, who is in a long term relationship but with no plans to marry, will not be wearing it. My mom made my dress at my request. I had no interest in a big formal gown. After my wedding in 1996, I put the dress in a zippered garment bag and it has hung in the 3 closets I've had since then. I showed my girls when they were young and they liked it then, but now, as teens, they are both bigger than me, so even if they liked the style in the next decade, they won't fit into it. I can't zip it up on myself anymore. I tried a few years ago for a scavenger hunt.
Michele, are my eyes deceiving me or is your wedding gown ...backless? That photo was quite a surprise if so!!
Mine has been hanging in my old room at my parent's house for the last 3 years. There's a lovely layer of sand at the bottom of the garment bag (we had photos done at the beach and pretty much the entire beach stuck to the hem). I've been meaning to clean it for, oh, three years. Whenever I see it I think, hmm, I should really get that thing cleaned - and then I forget about it for another couple of months! I'm sure I'll get around to it eventually.
Well I bit the bullet and checked again on line. David's Bridal had a sale price so with postage & tax @ $120 I await the box to send the dress off. Now I only pray that I can jam the dress into the box to send it off back to David and his minions. Thank you all for your help and your funny and otherwise stories!
