    So here's my latest situatuon...
I put everything that is on my PC on an EHD, in the event that my PC hard drive crashed I would have everything on another drive here at the house. But I also have Crash Plan with an off site backup, just in case anything ever happened to the external drive AND my PC (like a house fire). But then my PC was getting really full so I deleted a bunch of pictures (2004-2011) and felt ok because I knew they were still on the EHD and backed up to Crash Plan. My EHD died last night :( So I go to retrieve my photos from Crash Plan, and 2010 and 2011 are not there! I'm pretty sure they are gone forever. I could try a data restore of the drive but considering I have over 300 GB of data on the drive, and it's $50/GB to restore with no guarantees, there's no way I'm spending that kind of cash. Thankfully all my scrapbook pages are there, so it's not like I've got nothing to show for those 2 years. But I'm still kinda bummed. :( So I guess the moral here is make sure all of your back ups are really backed up!

Oh no... I can't think of anything worse than losing photos... but don't trust EHD's... my ex's dad was a data recovery specialist and he put me off them for life with some of the tales he told of disasters bought to him in hope of recovery...

Glad though that you have your pages at least...

    That sucks!

How did you have it set up in Crash Plan under their "Frequency and Versions" options?

These are my settings for photos. They have to be done for each backup set if you use multiple backup sets. I have several different sets because I use different settings for different items. But I have "Remove Deleted Files" set to "never" for my photo backup set. For other things, like my scrapping supplies, I have it set to "One Year" because chances are if I deleted it from my computer I won't want it back - things like extra previews, TOU files, supplies I don't use anymore, etc.

Oh no. :-( I was also just going to ask about your backup frequency settings. Have you tried to contact CS at Crash Plan? I'm hoping you can somehow recover them! Losing so many photos completely sucks :(

OH wow! That's awful! I do have two EHD's with my photos and scrap pages one them... but I'm always still nervous that something will happen. Hopefully you can recover some of it!

I'm sorry for you Lynette. I feel your pain cause I lost twice my datas. First time I was very lucky and got it back even thought I thought the salty water of the flood had ruined it all but the second time it's just my fault and the EHD crashed.
After that I subscribed to Crash Plan too. And when I see Peppermint's screen shot I realize that until this week and just by chance because I looked around a bit I discovered that feature lol
I've had it set up to never too so I'm good I think but I wish I knew how to check... Maybe I need to go look around again.

I backed up my scrap zips on DVDs this week... Still need to do some more so I will have to buy more DVDs.

I've had too much troubles with that, and pain above all, to loose all my scraps so I don't want it to happen again.

EVERYONE!!! BACK UP BACK UP BACK UP! Twice is not enough in my opinion lol

I have pretty similar settings to you Peppermint, so I'm starting to wonder if I'm the one who made the error? Maybe I didn't have 2010 and 2011 files on my EHD like I thought? It seems weird that Crash Plan would somehow exclude just those 2 folders and all the others are intact. Either way, still super bummed. :(

I was just asking my hubby if he thought we should have a 3rd ehd. Decision is now made after reading these post. In todays world our entire life is on the computer.

    Lynnette,

Have you tried using one of the restore programs to see if any of the photos are still on the hard drive on your laptop? Unless you did a secure erase when you deleted the photos, the only things that were really deleted were the pointers to the files in your directory (sorry, that's kinda techy). As long as the data hasn't been written over, the files will still be there and there are programs that can access them. Chances are that some of the photos have been written over, but others are probably still on your hard drive.

Lynnette, when you go to restore, have you checked the 'Show Deleted Files' and 'Show Hidden Files' checkboxes? I had an EHD die on me a year ago, and since I replaced it the contents of the original EHD don't show up to restore unless I check the 'Show Deleted Files' box. It took me months and months to restore my old layouts mostly because I was lazy about it but I knew they would never delete the stuff either so I took my time.

If you have Crash Plan backing up both your computer and your EHD it should have all of your photos that you deleted off your laptop stored forever. Have you called Crash Plan and asked them for help finding them? I'm so sorry you are going through this. :(

oh no that sucks.....I haven't printed any pictures since 2007 so I am seriously thinking about printing alot of pics and just getting them put in albums just to physically have in case something like this happened......so I think starting next payday I will print so many and then start putting them in albums....and if worse came to worse I could always scan something later if I wanted to digi scrap it :)

Thank you, thank you Carolee!!! I didn't even notice that little box, but sure enough when I clicked "show deleted files" there they are! I was about to contact Crash Plan but I hate doing customer service stuff, I know it would have taken hours to figure it out. You saved me! Doing a major happy dance right now. :woot:happydance2:fairydance

YIKES!! Going to get right on with that process then... I have two EHDs here at the house plus Flickr Pro for my photos. My BFF also has and EHD of mine at her house - time to swap with the extra one here. :)

I've lost thousands of photos over the years and still I am so bad about backing up. You'd think I'd learn my lesson...ugh. I do try harder these days to put digi stuff on pc and EHD and images on pc and on smugmug. It sure is frustrating.

Oh I'm so glad you found them! Woot!

I figured they had to be there somewhere when you said your settings looked like Peppermint's. I cannot tell you how much CrashPlan has saved me. I get a little trigger happy when it comes to the delete button on my computer. I have recovered important things like layouts and my stash when EHDs have failed as well as trivial things, like finding a text document I had deleted that contained details of my disney reservations from a 2009 trip so I could do the journaling.

I hope they don't jack up their prices like Mozy did once I need to renew.
