with the new year just a week away, i have to make a decsion for my 2013 PL. i tried the paper version this year, and i basically ended up doing hybrid. i would make everything in 4x6 digital blocks and print it out. it worked out okay i suppose, but i fell very far behind. i think maybe i fell behind because of the multiple steps of having to create it, then print it out and put it together. so i'm thinking maybe i will try going back to a digital album this year. my only real hesitation with doing this is that i have LOVED the hands-on album being here to flip through and look at throughout the year. if i do a digital album, there's a good chance i won't have that until the very end (if i make it to the end at all). at least with printing out the photos as i go, even if i don't get it done, i have something tangible to look at. and something is better than nothing. long story short, i can't decide for sure what i want to do. *sigh*
I started with paper this year, well, hybrid, I guess...I went to Costco a lot and switched to all digital in July. I love the all digital approach for me, because things are always neat and tidy when I don't actually touch the paper. I do occasionally miss having the "real" things in there (saving a scan of my ticket for The Hobbit rather than my ACTUAL ticket.) As for flipping back for motivation, I'm always "reading" my book in the Blurb bookmaker tool. So though I feel a slight tug to go back to paper, I'm sticking with digital for 2013.
Oh yeah I would loooove to do it paper or hybrid, but I know me! LOL...I would try to keep it up-to-date, but would prob. fail big time. I also love the actual stuff (like the tickets mentioned) in an album, but I'm waaay too messy for a paper, hybrid thing! I did all digital ther past year and loving it... I got it all on my pc & FB too, so I can see through when I feel like it. I never really had the urge to see it all printed...but I do now! I started p365 on Dec 20th 2011, the day after our girl turned 1, and looooooved seeing her 1st year album printed. I just need one more page for the new album and will make an add-on till the end of the year. Simply cause I would like to start a new project for 2013. No clue what it's going to be, but it's def going to be digital! Besides the digital stuff I also have got a daily written journal for Lina where I add some photos now & then... halfway through her 8th book! LOL And also have bought a smashbook recently for the fun little things she says or does...or for when we did something special. The plan is to add tickets and such real stuff in there Sooo LOL, not really anything to help you huh?! LOL You can always do it digital and print halfway through...?
My plan is to do weekly layouts (1 or 2 page) and print them out once a month and put them in 12x12 page protectors. That way I have them here throughout the year, but not doing the little 4x6 and 3x4 prints.
I think Tracy's idea is a great one, you can make the layouts and print them once in a while. Im gonna stick with the way I've been doing it, digital. 2012 was my first year so once I finish I want to print out a book or two.
yes, i think i would definitely have to print on a regular basis... otherwise i would have nothing to flip through. my kids have loved looking through the album (what little i have done of it) for 2012, and i think without that hands-on access, i would lose some major motivation. i may do a digital album, but print individual 12x12 pages to slide into page protectors. that way, too, i can still add inserts and smaller pockets if i have memorabelia i want to include. we'll see how that goes.
also, i'm thinking i might do less of a P/L approach, and more of a 'stay up-to-date on scrapping my pictures' approach. which means i will have to rethink my approach to scrapping just a bit. but it could work. i think. i think.
This is how I approached 2012 and it worked pretty good for me. I love the idea of a photobook at the end, but printing about once a month and having something tangible throughout the year has been nice.
If you're planning on doing your digital version through blurb you can print out a soft cover version every month. I'm such an instant gratification kind of gal and can't wait to see things in print! The soft covers are economically priced, you'll have something in your hands to flip through and share with your family, which might help with motivation to keep going throughout the year. At year's end you can print out the an entire year's worth as a hard bound book.
liz, i've never heard of blurb... what is it? i'm off to see if i can figure it out... sounds interesting!
Will continue digital. In Jan I tried to do it paper but just could not keep up. I also started to do digital 4 x 6 post card like pages for the week but fell behind by June and then I gave up. Taking photos every day is more of a habit now since I have been doing it since 2009. And I use ohlife to do my journaling each night which really helps when I fall behind like in the summer when things get crazy. I will continue that as well.
I've printed 8x10's (my fave), 7x9 (fave runner up), and 7x7's. The biggest book I printed was an 8x10 hardcover, 296 pages in all - that book came out to $99, shipping included (I probably used a 20% off coupon) - Best deal to date that I've gotten on a photobook! These were all just regular photobooks though, not Project Life. If I were to do a PL digital album I'd probably go with the 12x12 size. Like you though, I'm rethinking how I'm going to approach PL next year - weekly spreads are just too hard for me to keep on top of but then again, the appeal of PL is that I print out lots of photos that I wouldn't normally scrap so I'm sort of at a loss on what to do. Let me know what you come up with, I might follow suit.
I'm rethinking my pl too but haven't come up with anything yet....sigh..... I keep gravitating to an 8.5 x 11 size with baseball size protectors for some reason...i don't know if that would help anything though....i feel a slight burnout with the typical size and I don't know if its just a mojo thing or i need a change of "scenery" lol.... I'm also really wanting to hone into my photography more and want to do p365 but i know i cant do both....ugh decisions!!!
I'm going to stick to digi for my PL, and then just have fun making mini-books with all my scrap supplies. I can do mini books of special trips, events, or just a week in my life!
Just do a separate photography photo book that you don't "scrap". KWIM? Make a template and just plug the photos in every day.
I chose to use a 12x12 binder this year so that I could keep all the memorabilia in my scrapbook. I printed my Project 365 pages once a month so that we would have the pages to look at throughout the year. I'm planning to do something similar this year - printing once a month - but more of a PL format than Project 365. I also scrapped additional layouts for fun, and I just printed and put those layouts behind my Project 365 pages in the book.
I want to try this but I'm a little overwhelmed. I'm thinking I'll find a 12x12 album, print the individual 12x12 pages monthly and do it that way. I'm afraid if I wait until the end I won't actually print it out. Now to look through PL digi stuff and decide if I want to follow one kit/whatever all year. I'm not sure what to do there either.
I am a great enabler for my friend and boss Lynn-Marie here at the Pad! fingers, toes and eyes crossed she stays permanant. ..but she has these way cool templates that are beyond for me (at least) to do weekly, monthly or whatever...They are called Document Your Year (DYY) She has a video you can watch before on the same page HERE I was a bit perplexed, and then I opened them, and page after page just flew!! It is a no guilt way to do a yearly book. I am doing my The Christmas Book with it. You can see them in my gallery. Real simple, real quick and very very versatile.
