I have a laptop and a EHD. I only use my EHD as backup. However my poor laptop is getting pretty full ever since I bought dSLR. Those files are huge! I've been thinking about getting a portable EHD for me to dump most of my files onto so my laptop can have a break and run better. I'm a bit wary about doing this because as my husband pointed out I will need the EHD hooked up to laptop most of the time I'm using it. Since I only have two USB ports that kinda creates a problem. Another concern is that 90% of the time I am using my laptop on my lap. where would I put the EHD while doing this? Also, I've heard portable EHD's crash more often than non-portable ones.

So back to the original question...who uses a portable EHD with a laptop? Do you love it? Hate it? Have any advice on my concerns? Convince me that I need one....or don't need one :giggle

    I do I do...

I actually use a non-portable EHD with my laptop. Mainly because when I went to buy one, I was on a tight budget and I could get a 2 TB for less than I could get a 500 mb portable. I got a really good deal.

I have a much smaller 250 mb portable that I really don't use, but if I HAD to pick, I'd want a small, portable 2 TB. I don't use my laptop on my lap because I MUST have a mouse, I am challenged with that trackpad. I use a "tv dinner" type tray and put my big ol' EHD next to me on a table. It's quite dangerous really, especially when a dog or cat runs under the cord and nearly takes the whole set up with them.

My laptop IS faster because I store almost nothing but programs on it and I feel like I can almost unplug and go anywhere even though the one I have is a large drive.

I'd say absolutely get one. I'd choose a portable with a lot of file size. It doesn't require a power supply (mine does!) and they are absolutely light as a feather. If I used my laptop on my lap, I would just plug it in and sit it on the couch or chair beside me.

    Go for it!

This one is like mine...but I paid 75.00 on sale for it.

This is like the small one I have at home, but I'd want a 2 TB, I couldn't even find one on the Best Buy site so I'd probably buy this one or something similar.

I have a portable 500 GB that I store all my digi-supplies and most of my photos on. I back it up to a 2TB non-portable drive.

I use a tablet next to my laptop and generally sit up at the bar counter in my kitchen to scrap.

I like that storing the files on my EHD makes the laptop faster. At some point, I will have to expand the size of the portable one. I have traveled with the portable EHD so I think I'll stick with the smaller portable size for supply storage.

I do this, too. It's awesome because the EHD is small and portable and I do move it between two computers in my home. I keep all my scrapping files on one EHD and I back it up to a second EHD every month or so (should do it more).

I keep everything of mine on a portable EHD. I have a WD 1TB that I love to pieces. I mainly scrap on my desktop at home, so the issue of where to put it isn't a problem for me. I started putting everything on the EHD though because anytime I scrap with my laptop outside of my house I don't have to worry about transferring files I just unplug my EHD and take it with me. I can't imagine it any other way!

I also have a 2nd EHD (non-portable) that I back everything up to.

Jewelle, I only store programs, fonts, DH's documents, etc. on the laptop. I have all my photos and scrap supplies on a portable EHD and have done it that way for years. I have everything backed up on other EHDs at my house, the most important photos on my MIL's and my mom's computers, and through Flickr, so I feel reasonably secure.

I scrap on my lap, too, and just set the EHD on the chair/couch arm when I work. Mine is getting old enough that it's starting to be sensitive to movement when I get up/sit down, but it's no big deal, just something I am aware of. I have two spots in the living room where I do 99% of my scrapping and am positioned in such a way that the chair/couch arm I use is up against a table or bookcase so DD and the dog don't have easy access to it or have the chance to bump it off. I usually only scrap when DD is napping or in bed for the night, so it hasn't been a real concern for me. I bring my EHD to my ILs' and to my parents' as well so I can transfer my photos to their computers and transfer theirs to mine ('cause Lord knows none of them could ever figure out even with instruction how to email a photo or burn a CD!).

You can always buy a USB hub (which is way cheap) if you're concerned abt only having one free USB port.

I do, BUT the laptop is not my main computer. I just have a little MacBook, and I use my little 500GB Western Digital portable ETD with it and it works like a charm. I mostly only use it for traveling.

I do. I actually don't keep much of anything on my laptop. When I download kits, etc. they go straight to my EHD. I keep all of our pictures on there as well. I back up my EHD to a 2TB family one we have. It is nice because my laptop stays running pretty efficiently this way.

I do too. I use a portable and a non portable EHD. I've done this for years and do not think one last longer than the other unless you are rough on your portable. All my scrappy stuff and photos go to the EHD to leave my laptop running smoothly. And I do send my stuff to both so if one EHD goes out, I do have a back up. When I need more ports I use a USB hub as someone already mentioned in another thread. Good luck!

    I do!
I have a 1TB WD portable ehd that I keep all my digi supplies and photos on. I do keep the most recent things I've downloaded on my laptop though...I only switch ct things over to the ehd once i've used them. I keep all my layouts on my laptop too, but I delete the layered files. I also back everything up with Backblaze. I've had a crash before and was able to recover everything that I hadn't transferred over to my ehd. I like that Backblaze will also backup your ehd!!

I don't, but thought I would suggest the idea of networking your laptop to another computer. I have mine networked with our home computer and it's awesome! I have huge EHD on my puter just for my SB stuff and another just for my pics. Just thought I would mention this option. :-)

I use a portable EHD for almost all of my files and then back it up to a couple of regular EHDs. (I plan on signing up for an online backup sometime soon).

This sounds great! We're in the process of moving soon, but when we get settled and get our desktop hooked up again, I need to look into doing this!!

Thanks for asking this question. I've been wondering the same thing. I scrap mostly on my desktop, but I would like to use my laptop more. I just think it would be much more comfy to scrap on the couch at night.

I have most of my scrapping stuff on a portable EHD that is the size of a pack of cards. It is 500 GB and that is enough for most of my current stuff. I use Carbonite online back up for my laptop files but I do worry a bit about the EHD failing.

All of my scrap stuff and my photos are on the EHD! I take it with me when I go to crops.
