Facebook terror by members....

I just got an email from her saying the same thing! I came right over here to see if anyone received anything! I figured it was some phishing or scam or something, scary!

The title of the email says: BAD VACATION......Carolee Harris

and here is the content:

I'm writing this with tears in my eyes,my family and I came down here to London, United Kingdom for a short vacation. unfortunately,we were mugged at the park of the hotel where
we stayed,all cash and credit card were stolen off us but luckily for us we still have our
passports with us.

We've been to the Embassy and the Police here but they're not helping issues at all and our flight leaves in few hours from now but we're having problems settling the hotel bills and
the hotel manager won't let us leave until we settle the bills. Well I really need your financially assistance..Please, let me know if you can help us out? Am freaked out at the moment!!​

 

Hi guys! I was hacked. I'm so sorry. I did regain control of my account but I have some extra 'friends' and I still have to fix some things. One of my old college roommates called me after someone got to her via phone. Scary.

I'm still trying to clean it up so if you see anything weird from me please don't answer.

I have gotten this exact spam email from one of my friends through FB too when her account was hacked. I am glad you are on top of getting it all fixed! Crazy that people do this kind of thing.

 

Yes, they created a new yahoo e-mail address in my name. I have reported it to yahoo but I have no control over it, so I hope yahoo shuts it down.

That's awful Carolee. Did FB give you any idea how you were hacked? Did they Phish from FB or did they guess your password?

 

Ugh... what a mess! I'm so sorry that this happened to you. I hope you're able to get it all straightened out quickly.

Holy crumb that is awful Carolee!! Glad you are okay but still frustrating to have to clean up someone else's crappy mess. A good warning to everyone though. The hacking has gotten really bad at FB.

 

Heather, I'm not sure how they got my pw. It was a pretty easy one unfortunately, I normally use really strong passwords but when I first signed up for facebook I used a weak one and had never changed it.

I was able to get access to my account taken back pretty quickly. I locked it up immediately and then it took me through a verification process to get it back. What facebook does to verify it is really you is to quiz you on identifying your friends via their photos. So I had to answer a lot of multiple choice questions about 'Who is this?' and they showed me photos. It got a bit difficult because they were showing me lots of scrapbook pages as some of the photos and I had to figure out who made the page. LOL

I did learn a lot from this. It could have been avoided if I had used some account security safeguards that Facebook provides. One is called login approval and it makes it impossible for anyone to login as you from a non-approved device unless they enter a special code that is sent to your phone. So I am signed up for that now. You can find that in the 'Account Settings' area.

Another thing I did was remove access to my e-mail address from friends. People can still message you but that protects your e-mail from being taken if someone else's account is hacked.

I cannot tell you how many phone calls I received yesterday from people, some I had not talked to in years. My phone was ringing all day.

Wow, that is awful. I just went in and changed my facebook password and made my phone number private. I tried to set up for it to text me a code if an unrecognized device was used for login but it never texted me the code. I will keep trying though. I had my email hacked a while back and it was awful. What a horrible feeling to know some stranger has accessed your account! I'm glad you got it straightened out. Thanks for alerting us so we can be more vigilant about our own account security. I know I am now!
