I've always had the idea that I could only read one book at a time. This somehow made me avoid "harder" books - in the meaning harder to read, like classics and heavy non-fiction books. I really wanted to add more of those into my TBR, but they always made me read less - just because they are harder to read.

I know - reading isn't a competition, where the one who reads the most wins, but I got really annoyed by those books slowing my reading down. Especially, non-fiction can really take some time to get through. At the same time, I want to read more non-fiction, to learn more about stuff.

I know, I talk about this guy a lot - but stumbling on to the YouTube channel Tristan and the Classics, really was a blessing. He had this tip for reading classics - read 12 pages every day. I've tried this now for about a month - and it's such a GREAT way to get more "harder" books read.

I've taken it a bit further - now I read three books at a time. I start every morning with 12 pages in a non-fiction book, then 12 pages in a classic, and after that - I'm free to read my "entertainment book", i.e. any book I feel like reading right now, usually a romance, a murder mystery or a biography (those are the types of books I read the most of). Note: sometimes I read 8 pages in a book - or 15 - depending on the length of chapters and so on. But 12 pages are what I'm aiming for.

Yesterday it happened that I finished three books in one day, and today I was able to start three new books. My current non-fiction book is Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge, my current classic is a collection of short stories (seems that the Swedish edition has made a selection from three different books) by Julio Cortázar, an Argentinian author I've never heard of before, and my current entertainment book is Death Comes to Pemberley by P.D. James. (Yes, I cannot give up on Lizzy & Mr. Darcy).

I really think I love this way to read! And it sure makes me read - I finished THIRTEEN books in April!!!!

    How about you:
Do you read one book at a time?
Or do you have several books going at the same time?
Do you read non-fiction at all?
Will you try my new way of reading?

You just adjust it to a way that fits you. Maybe you want to read one self help book and one fiction. For me it really helps with getting the variation of books. Also, I have some tendencies to think that romance isn't "real" or "good" literature. Now I can avoid that ... guess I should call it shame ... by reading "good books" too.

I mostly listen to audiobooks right now since I’m driving around a lot. I like my kids to see me read actual books sometimes though because I like them to read. ;)

Do you read one book at a time? I mostly read one at a time, but I often do pause one book to read one "required" book for my book club and then I'll go back and finish the other book. I also quite often have an audiobook that I'm listening to during the day and a kindle book i'm reading at bedtime, so then I do have multiple books at once

A friend of mine said she didn't know how I could do that and I asked her if she watched more than one show on TV... I said it's the same thing. :giggle

Do you read non-fiction at all? Rarely, but once in a while. I did just read a 230 page book about Vincent Van Gogh that was excellent.

Will you try my new way of reading? Maybe?

Never thought about the TV shows. Of course it's the same!

Vincent van Gogh ... that must have been interesting. I love biographies.

Do you read one book at a time? I usually have two books at a time - one audio and one physical. I go through audio books WAY faster. I tend to put a physical book down and not pick it back up for a week or more. I like your idea of reading 12 pages a day, I want to try that!

Do you read non-fiction at all? Most of what I read is non-fiction, I love narrative non-fiction history books and memoirs. I'm probably 75% non-fiction, 25% fiction.

I'm inconsistent. I do both. On a whim. I'm currently reading 2 books. For many months now, I've been keeping at least 2 books going at a time, because I started liking to read the Anne of Green Gables series (I'm on book 7 now, Rainbow Valley) only at bedtime, as they have short chapters and it's easy, non-exciting reading. But I want to read bigger, deeper, more exciting or more informative stuff during the day, so I do. I include non-fiction in my reading all the time. Five of the twenty books I've read so far this year have been non-fiction.
I'm glad you've found a way that's working for you. I just want to read a bit every day and I prefer to count by chapters rather than pages. I mean, I don't want to stop just because it's the 12th page, but because the chapter has ended. The only time I stop in the middle of a chapter is if I got tired.

I mostly read one book at a time. Sometimes I will have a physical book in progress as well as a book on my Kindle. I like reading my Kindle in bed at night because then it's not quite as apparent to my husband how late I'm staying up in bed reading as when the lamp is on.

I do read nonfiction although admittedly not as often as I read fiction books.

I won't change my way of reading because I happen to be blessed at reading quickly while also retaining what I've read. I can easily finish a book in a day. That comes in very handy when time is short and I've got little time to get a book done for one of my book clubs! In fact, I've got to go now and start reading "James" by Percival Everett for Wednesday's discussion.

P.S. Thanks for the Tristan & the Classics info. I subscribed to his channel. Great videos with interesting content!

i usually read with my ears lol (audio).
if something is too 'heavy' and will keep me awake, i'll leave it for daytime (cleaning or chores) listening but i have been just listening to music more then lately. And it takes me ages usually to 'read' books at night because some narrators are good at putting me to sleep - Case in point: I've listened to about 3 chapters of Andy Weir's Project Hail Mary over the space of a week and a bit now because i'm out so quickly with that narrator despite liking the science and spacey stuff so far!
I did start a Sophie Kinsella book while overseas recently and got a 1/4 of the way thru so technically i'm reading 2 books at the moment and that's pretty normal for me. I'm not up for non-fiction but i have shelves full of paper books i should try your method just to put a dent in my real 'to be read' books

I love memoirs/biographies too. I actually would (for my reading plan) read them as "entertainment" and not as a non-fiction book.

I'm not totally fixed at the exact 12 pages, it's more like an aim. I break where there's a natural break, like chapter or paragraph. Like yesterday, I only read the foreword in the non-fiction book, which turned out to be 8 omges. Then I read 2 short stories in the classic which was 14 pages.

Happy you like the Youtube channel! He's so enthusiastic about reading, and has been such an inspiration to me.

I need to read James as well. It sounds so interesting.

I wish I could listen to audio books too, but I've realized, I just don't keep up with them. My brain just won't remember who people are and I get lost all the time cuz I "forget to listen". I need my eyes involved when reading to register everything. I'm totally old-school when it comes to reading. I'm even struggling with e-books. My eyes dors not like reading on a screen. I can do it for short periods of time only.

    Hard-cover books. That's my thing.

Sometimes I can read more than one at the same time.. I read on line free through my library so I borrow both fiction and non fiction.

I love to read .. I find when I ride my exercise bike it make the time go by faster. I no longer buy books I just read them on line :)

I cannot do audio books as it is like someone reading me a story and I fall asleep :)

Oh, I wonder if I could read while on my threadmill? Gotta try that. Though I doubt it, my vision isn't the best.

I rarely buy books these days either. We have soooo many books, we should get rid of books really, rather than buying more. Nowadays, I borrow books at the library, and if I really love a book, I might buy it. I have some books I call my "prozacs" - books I want to read again cuz they make me happy.

I liked borrowing from the library too but it is across town so it is easier to borrow on line from the library. What I like with the reading on my phone, I can change the settings to make the print larger and the white background brighter so it works well.. I got my hubby hooked on it too reading books on line from the library!!!

I hear ya re your "happy books"... That is my "North & South" Trilogy by John Jakes, Twilight, Harry Potter and Outlander :) Those I have all the books and DVDs to -except Outlander, which I will get the DVD to as soon as Season 8 is finished to get the entire collection :)

I got rid of most of our books last year to the library so they can resell at their "Friends of the Library" store on site. A lot I had bought there to begin with when I was working as it was like $2 etc for hard cover books and less for a paper back.

[I need to see about donating games/DVDs that we no longer play or watch to perhaps an adult living place.. still working on that, otherwise I will give them also to the library to resell. (I do not like to host garage sales - Here in the states to get rid of things, some people have sales at their home by putting stuff out on their driveway etc. People come and buy and you make some money from your unwanted items. Some sell on EBay and I just give a lot of stuff to Good Will or Salvation Army.)]

Do you read one book at a time? Yes. I'm happier that way.

Or do you have several books going at the same time? Nope.

Do you read non-fiction at all? Not usually. Seldom, maybe if it's for my book club.

Will you try my new way of reading? Not likely, lol! I like single book reading at a time. I even do single book/audio at a time, same book. I prefer the focus on one story.

I read a lot, so while a book might take me a day, it does go fast. I think I read 16 in April, 15 in March.... then 8 February and 5 January (was away on a cruise for 2.5 weeks and didn't read much and those books were heavier).

I don't watch much TV... so I read all the time. I think I put my goal at 100 this year... I was iffy last year with 110. This year I'm already at 47 so I might make it, haha!
