This week I learned that prison inmates (or at least some of them) can vote. I had assumed that they couldn't. This week I learned a wire wrapping technique for jewelry design and am finding that craft so intriguing. I learned a new rule in Canasta (card game) that I hadn't heard of in the year I've been playing it. I have learned thru trying different jewelry designs that I like to design very much like I scrapbook. I like to combine different styles, colors and shapes. I don't like symmetrical designs, I like something to be off kilter.
Im learning new phrases in moroccan arabic (dajra) Such as dinosaur Dog Cat My handsome husband I'm hungry No thank you
I just watched a video on how to make a wavy beaded friendship bracelet. I haven't successfully executed the technique (yet!) but I will. My husband just learned tonight how to butter baste steak and I am super proud of him for it.
Looking at a book with a student in the library this afternoon, I learned that axolotls are about 9 inches long and come in a variety of colors.
Mmm not much yet but I need to learn a bit more about zucchini growing. A friend said he would give me a cutting? Not sure how you call it (had to look in the dictionary). He planted a seed and he is growing the baby zucchini plant and when ready he will give to me so that I can grow it in my tiny garden. Actually, I did already learn that it needs a lot of water? I guess I will be on my toes all summer so that it doesn't die from the Japanese heat
I was reading the book Demon Copperhead this week and learned the term "Melungeon", I had never heard that before. Then later that day I was scrolling facebook and saw a post about Melungeon people so that further piqued my interest and I did some google searching and further reading about Melungeon people. Melungeons are a historically distinct group of people of mixed European, African, and Native American ancestry who lived primarily in the Appalachian Mountains, particularly in the southeastern United States.
Things I’ve Learned this week: That using ChatGPT, I can create weekly menu plans tailored to a special diet. How to use live captioning to have phone conversations on my iPhone. It’s been years since I used my phone for anything besides texting, photography, and reading. Which of the perennials I planted last summer actually survived. All the verses to Mercedes Benz. (Long story.)
I learned that the plural of Lego is LEGO (and not Legos or LEGOs) .. I also learned that Lego should always be capitalized to LEGO! (my youngest is a LEGO maniac)
I learned the same thing from reading the same book! I had never hear of that term before and also went and looked it up. I love that book! I've read it twice already.
I kind of re-learned how to use oil paint over the last month. I learned how to oil paint when I was in high school but then switched to acrylics for a couple decades. I bought a couple of classes in about 2017 and bought all the supplies and then was too chicken to just start painting. This year one of my goals is to complete all of the classes and projects that I already have supplies for before I start anything else new. Anyway, I've made 7 new paintings now and I'm remembering how much I loved oil painting! SO much easier to blend! I also learned a little about robotics competitions because my nephews team went to the World championship in Houston last week and they live-streamed all their matches. It's SO cool! Last night I learned (from a FB video) how flour tortillas are made. Now I want to try making my own.
I learned that the Regency Era only were 9 years long. Very short period of time, and judging by the amount of regency romance novels, people couldn't have time for nothing else than falling in love during that time.
Canasta is such a fun card game! It was years since we played it though. Wonder if we can remember all the rules?
We saw a clip on Youtube about them just recently. About their DNA. Really fascinating - you really wonder how this mix came about.
Just a guess but given they live in the southeastern US ... male European colonists mating with their female African slaves who mated with Native Americans (Indians) ... also the colonists mated with the Native Americans. I need to Google this group.
I learned that I want to do all the crafts, but do not have all the time or energy! I recently learned about English paper piecing and I really want to try it!
I learned how to replace the o-ring on my suction trap in my dental chair this week- it was not sealing correctly & the hissing sound was driving me nuts, so instead of waiting for the repair guy that comes once a month, I took it apart & figured it out when my patient didn't show & I had some free time! I learned about seed banks while reading a book and that piqued my interest so I researched it a bit. There are roughly 1700 seed banks throughout the world. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault, located in Norway's Svalbard islands, is widely considered the largest seed bank in the world. It can store 4.5 million seed samples, each containing an average of 500 seeds, potentially holding 2.25 billion seeds in total! I learned that Prom is a crazy expensive tradition, but thankfully I have a budget minded daughter & she found the most gorgeous dress online for ONLY $100 and is reusing a bunch of her jewelry from past dances. While we could afford to spend money on luxury stuff like this, it's nice to know that we've instilled some money conscious values in her and she doesn't ask!
