I'm so excited. Seriously, my niece needed her routine back. I was counting hours yesterday. And it's back! Summer felt so short, until last Thursday. Then it felt like it would never, ever end. Bless the teachers! When does school go back in your area?
This is my first year of not having a k-12 student. Our district starts on Aug 15th, but Megan doesn’t start at BYU until Sept 4th. We are going to be official empty nesters.
In the school district in which I live and work, teachers started back last Thursday, Kindergarten, Sixth and Ninth grades get an intro the day after tomorrow unless the hurricane remnants are so bad by the time it gets up here in Virginia that they have to cancel it, and school starts for everyone on Monday. I think the adjacent school districts are nearly the same.
My mom went back on Monday and her students go back next Monday. We started homeschool on Monday too. It's just too hot to be outside right now and we prefer a longer winter break (which coincides with MOC )
August 18 to June 11 for FCPS in Northern Virginia. I no longer have children/grandchildren in K-12, but I get to deal with the high school traffic and walkers trying to get to school while I’m trying leave my neighborhood in the mornings. School is across the road from my “exit” intersection.
I'm always so surprised when some schools start back so early in August! I'm in Michigan and ours usually start the day after labor day (September 3rd). This will be the first year I don't have a kid in K-12, so I don't even know if they start the day after labor day or the week before that. My two boys will be in college. One starts August 26th and one starts Sept 3rd.
FCPS used to start the Tuesday after Labor Day until a few years ago, then they pushed it back so the students would get out earlier in June, then they added more days off during the school year ... so the kids are going a week longer than my kids and I did back when we were FCPS students BITD.
My neighbor (a teacher in a neighboring school system) and I were just talking about this yesterday. When I was in the local school system in the 60's/70's we started the day after Labor Day and got out the first week in June. We also didn't have a spring break, it was usually just Good Friday and Easter Monday. At Christmas, depending on the calendar, we would get out the 22nd/23rd and go back on Jan 2. These dates also made sense for us because back in those days, the schools were not air conditioned and we would have hot weather right up until Labor Day and cooler temps in early June. Now they start around the 20th of August and get out before Memorial Day and have longer breaks at Easter and Christmas. There are schools in the area that start August 13th, go for a week then have a week off because of the county fair. My neighbor and I both think that is stupid.
My aunt's kids grew up in Maine, they'd start school in August, then have 3 or so weeks off in Sept/Oct for the potato harvest. Once my cousins were 13-14 years old they picked potatoes to earn money to buy themselves back-to-school clothes and shoes.
Our schools start at all different times because we have a large amount of catholic schools and charter schools as well as the school board schools. Some started this week and some next week. My DD works at a preschool and they start the 19th! My DGS started elementary school Pre-K4 today!
I can sort of understand that. But with the county fair being the 3rd week of August, why not just wait until the next week to start school instead of starting the 2nd week of August going 2 or 3 days then having a week off for the students who showed their 4-H projects at the fair. Even starting a couple days before Labor Day then having a long weekend was a pain according to my mom (taught 33 years). The kids hadn't yet gotten into a routine in the classroom then the teachers had to start all over again after the long weekend. Actually, Mom always hated the first day back after any time off... the kids were hyped up and didn't want to settle down, even when she taught 7th grade.
I start back Monday and our kids come back on the 19th. They are adjusting our calendar this year, so summer was a bit shorter. We are going back about a week early and supposed to finish by May 30 instead of a week in to June.
My kids are going back on the 16th - yes, on a Friday! Our district always starts on a Friday which is so weird. And it's a shortened day, so only like five hours long. I have a love/hate relationship with going back to school. Summer never feels long enough but getting back in a routine always feels good.
When my kids were in Prince Wm County schools (early 80s), school started the Thursday before Labor Day weekend. Thursday was the elementary schools half-day ... I thought that was so dumb. Either start them on Monday or wait until Tuesday after Labor Day. I'm so glad to be done with having kids in school!!!
