I finished! The premise of the book was so intriguing to me as someone who is fascinated by both history and ideas about the future. I was kind of skeptical about how someone could survive in her circumstances, after she made the deal, but as the book went on, I really identified with her curiosity about the world, her love for it. I find it very true that we can always have new experiences. My spoilery thoughts: Spoiler: my spoilery thoughts In the middle, I started to suspect Henry had made a deal with Luc too, and I was so relieved for Addie. I didn't fully understand why he could remember her though...? I also suspected that Luc actually became fond of Addie. But I was ambivalent about her choice to leave Henry. It was clever, but maybe she could have thought of a different clever way that didn't involve leaving him. Or do you think she really didn't care about Henry? Also, it ended a little abruptly, leaving me wondering how her life will be like while she's waiting for Luc to become tired of her. I'm hoping she doesn't have to wait too long and then can go spend more time with Henry. So I think there could be a sequel. This is my first time reading VE Schwab. Does she do sequels?
She has done series books. Though, I still have to read it... but I don't think she was planning on a sequel for this novel. I'm finishing up a series now, then this is on my list. That list is growing so fast, lol!
am I the only one that can't get into this one? lol. I've been reading it for over a month! That's NOT like me. I'm only like 18% done.
I'm with you! I finally finished but it did take me quite a while to get into it. The premise is interesting but for whatever reason I couldn't get invested in the story. It did get better as it went on, by the time I was 75% through I was more engaged but still, it wasn't a favorite and I don't think the story will stay with me.
Same. I thought it sounded fascinating but I am severely struggling. Not sure I can get 75% done any time soon. hahahaha. More things I WANT to read!
I finished it and like you, it took me awhile to get into the book. I kept starting and stopping and towards the middle, it finally grabbed me. Spoiler: Addie and Henry The part where Addie met Henry is when I really got into the book. As soon as she realized he could remember her, I knew it wasn't a coincidence that he happen to cross paths with her. I truly wanted them to be together but I knew love was one sided. Henry loved Addie. But Addie herself knew she didn't love him as he loved her. “And then he whispers three words into her hair. “I love you,” he says, and Addie wonders if this is love, this gentle thing. If it is meant to be this soft, this kind. The difference between heat, and warmth. Passion, and contentment. “I love you too,” she says. She wants it to be true.” I didn't want the book to end as it felt like another story needed to be told of Luc and Addie. But I guess we are left to decide how will end.
YES! I love her narration & have actually searched goodreads just for books narrated by her. She is so great on this one and in general!
I just finished this book for one of my book groups and loved it! I agree that it started a bit slow but once it got going, I was captivated. I loved the character, Henry and his relationship with Addie.
I finished it in 2024, but I never came back here! It was so interesting how she "traveled" her road. I just wanted Addie to be happy. I would have loved to see more of an Epilogue. I found the ending gave me mixed feelings. Bittersweet.
