That is an enormous effort -i would say you deserve a standing ovation rather than a pat on the back! Way to go!
Awesome!!! My scrapping is all over the place, so my albums are mostly a mish-mash. That said, once I retire I want to make newborn to teen albums for my GK with themed double-page spreads (birthdays, Christmas, beach, Disney, scouts, etc.) and then I'm going to print them as photo books as my GK have already let me know that they aren't interested in a bunch of album. I'm also printing some of my fave photos as 6x8 prints to put in a three-ring binder as I think they may prefer to have some loose photos. I do plan to use a pencil to identify the person(s) on the back of each photo.
I so agree with this! A real life example here: My late father in law painted once he was paralyzed. My mother in law had a ton of his paintings sitting in boxes along with some newspaper/newsletter articles and a few other bits of stuff. No one saw it. I scanned them all, and arranged them in a Shutterfly book. Sure, they aren't as amazing as seeing the painting framed on a wall, but they are viewed many more times than in the box. We sent a copy to each of my husband's brothers, and now grandkids and great grandkids have seen the paintings and learned a story that some never knew. It's always easier to look through a book than random photos with no context.
I agree that having something done is better than nothing. Having something in an album is so much easier to look at than rather than looking through boxes. And more important than that is to have everyone identified. That is the one thing my mom was good at. I can't tell you how many boxes of photos of old family photos we went through years ago. Her memory for details was astounding - she could remember names, dates, places, events... , not only for her family, but for my dad's, too. Unfortunately, it all falls upon me to get everything scanned and into albums. Even as I'm typing this I'm scanning the contents of my mom's recipe box - it has things in there from both grandma's, her sister, friends and more. Now I've got to figure out what to do with them. some of them are so damaged from years of use and food spillage that they're damaged beyond use. So I'm having a font made of my mom's writing to see if I can recreate them. Thankfully she printed lots of these cards so hopefully I'll be able to get enough from them. There always seems to be something to do, isn't there?
The books that I've done for my 2 cousins were so appreciated. Neither of them scrapbook and old photos are in boxes. Digital photos are on their phones or their computers. I did "borrow" quite a few of the more current photos from FB postings which they were OK with. But all the old photos from camera days were those that were taken by either my mom or me. Some were photos they never saw but they now have in those Shutterfly books. Thankfully my mom was great about noting on the backs of photos the when and who of who was in them. So for many I actually had some information which was nice. But the best thing is that both of my cousins still tell me to this day how much they love those books. The grandkids are able to see what life was like for the grandparents when they were kids as well and of course they have to laugh at how they looked back in the 60's!
that sounds like a huge undertaking, but it will be SO worth it to have those and keep them in good condition for years to come!
I love this soooo much! My mother-in-law has always been great at writing on the backs of pictures as well, and that does help quite a bit. but it's still sooooo much easier to look at them all when they're in an album format!
Jan, what an accomplishment! I want a peek at your Eagle Scout book. I still need to do Chase’s and also a mission book for both him and Aspen. I start and don’t continue. I need to find a simpler system. Maybe a combo of what you and Tracie @tkradtke are doing.
I sent you a message. Oh, definitely do the simple Tracie way! lol! The scout album took me YEARS of work because every page was done with all the bells and whistles. The album I did for our sister trip to Sweden was much more simple - everything was the same, starting with using the same grey paper for the background, an album template set (with many modifications to fit the photos), fonts, and very few elements - if at all. I love the continuity, but it still took me four years to complete simply because I took so many photos. It was also a very special trip, so I wanted it to be perfect, ya know? It ended up being 99 pages! Yikes!
