Sauerkraut- Yay or Nay? I love it! I don’t know why. My husband hates it. Hates the smell of it. A few days ago we bought brats and sauerkraut was on sale so I grabbed some and put it in the cart. Hubby was not amused. It probably has been about five years since I had it. It was great on my brat with some mustard. I make no apologies. I read online that it is best served cold probably for the probiotic content and efficacy but I can’t imagine having cold sauerkraut. I have a feeling I am going to be a minority for my love of sauerkraut.
It's been a long time since I've eaten it. My mom used to make her own and it was delicious. I've had others but nothing quite tastes the same. I don't eat as many hot dogs as I used to when I was a teenager/young adult.
Nope, never been a fan. As a child growing up, it was never fixed in my house. Dad wouldn't allow it. You see, one of his high school friends was married and they were expecting their first child. She was near her due date and they had it for dinner. She went into labor and the baby was born thankfully healthy. But mom passed away. She was throwing up following the delivery and strangled on the sauerkraut. Dad's friend ended up remarrying and had 5 more children. 2nd wife raised the daughter as her own. But she ever once ate sauerkraut.
I love a Reuben Sandwich and it must have sauerkraut! I like it with hot dogs, too. My hubby loves it and eats it quite often.
I don't remember if I ever had sauerkraut growing up or in early adulthood, but since I've learned about the health benefits of fermented foods, I've been open to trying it and this year I discovered these. I just like how easy it is to toss more veggies onto my food. They aren't a strong flavor and just kind of disappear in the mix (usually a scrambled egg burrito with other veggies). I've only tried the Beet Red one so far; I'm about to finish my third bag. https://www.clevelandkitchen.com/pages/krauts
yak, i remember as a child opening screen door, and smelling that or her making liver... not pleasant
My family is German, so I was raised on Sauerkraut and hot dogs, Sauerkraut and pork, and just lots of Sauerkraut.
Love sauerkraut. My mom made sauerkraut and pork chops. I love that, plus on my hotdogs and brats. Yum!!!
I definitely like it on good German brats and it's also a must on Ruebens which I also love. I will admit I've never made it myself though.
I like sauerkraut but don’t buy it often. I get it after St. Patrick’s Day when we have leftover corn beef and I make Reuben sandwiches. I thought the sauerkraut in Austria was sooooooo much better than what is available here.
Yep! Love it. Grew up eating it- great grandmother was a Hautz- German. So, yeah. we eat it several times a year or whenever we have the sausage. Sausage, sauerkraut, whipped potatoes and peas. Mmm- hmm.
I went to a graduation party this weekend and there was a side dish that reminded me of this thread... it wasn't exactly sauerkraut, but it was similar. It was shredded cabbage and carrots (like coleslaw mix) and there was some spice in it that made it all yellow. It looked different, so I tried it and it ended up being kind of pickled flavor. It was totally different, but good. I have no idea what that was called.
So, I don't think I've ever actually had it. I think the smell has always put me off... and I've always been happy with other options - mustard, ketchup, relish or a combo.... I don't think I've had a Rueben either. lol! ETA... I do like other cabbage foods and recipes.
