Robyn, those look a lot like the photos my son is sending me. He lives in the Upper Michigan. Amazing!
Holy Cow... you on ground level and there are drifts, right? We get lots of snow usually, but this winter has been quiet!
Wow. I thought Ottawa had a lot of snow. I'd say the snow in my backyard is only about half as deep as that drift. Also, we had freezing rain on the weekend and our driveway right now is both super slippery and sharp and pointy at the same time. Actually, snow keeps things cozy. Snow usually happens as a warm front is coming in, so the upside to it falling is that the temperature rises (usually). Also - snow is a great insulator. It costs less to heat my house once we get a decent amount of snow on the roof. My daughter slept outside in a snow trench two weekends ago with her Pathfinder unit. She said it was warmer than some of her Spring camping experiences. Also, I realize you are in South Africa, so, yes, it's relatively cold where I live right now.
We have gotten almost 40" this month. This is mostly a drift but the snow is knee to waist deep throughout my yard. In southern Minnesota this weekend there was so much snow and blowing it covered peoples garages!! We don't have it that bad. I can't imagine!!
That's a huge drift! I live in Northern Wisconsin and we're on track to break the most snow we've ever gotten in February. In fact, I had to start feeding the rabbits in the yard two weeks ago. The snow is above the tree line of my Arborvitae's which is like crack cocaine to the rabbits. They will eat all the lower branches off because they can't get to anything else. So now I'm feeding them.
I swear February Mother nature was like a sleep deprived momma, on her period, with no coffee left in the house - ALL MONTH LONG! At this rate I fear spring wont come until June!
