more often it appeared to be tourists in the kimonos on this trip, rental is everywhere if you ever want to dress up over there yourself - the wooden thongs/ authentic footwear with a high heel kind of bar across the bottom made my feet ache just looking at them. We did see locals in more traditional dress on one of the public holidays on our 2nd trip but then it's a trade off of more crowds
You bring back amazing memories. I lived in Japan as a child, in Misawa, but visited Kyoto often. I giggled about the rental of kimonos! I actually had those silly shoes as a kid; they are fun to wear, and ours had a velvet thong through the toes that helped. The beauty of Japan shines off your page, and I love it!
