Told to get a new laptop

thanks! I ended up with the HP Envy. the exact one I posted earlier but no touch screen. Got a steal at Costco for $800 instead of the $1150 at Best Buy to not have the touch screen. Wasn't sure what I'd do with a touch screen laptop anyway!

so here goes the pain of moving everything starting next weekend. UGH

Awesome!!! Merry Christmas to you!! I’v Never done any scrapping on a laptop. Don’t even own one. We’ve always have had desktops.

This made me giggle cuz my Envy has the touch screen and I don't use it. DS uses it for a reading site that his school recommends they use, but that's probably cuz (1) they use iPads at school so he's used to a touch screen and (2) he can't really "hold" a mouse yet. :)

So this thread shoulda come with a warning - congrats on your new purchase, Jlynn.

I ended up buying this HP Pavillion 15.6" yesterday after seeing this thread and many hours of consideration and spec comparisons (gaming pc's and 17" pc's like Jan's were pretty close to $2k for the most basic on sale with still only 8GB RAM and my budget is nowhere near that, and HP Envy i could only find in 13" screens here)
I was looking at a Lenovo one around the $800 mark with 12GB RAM a few weeks back (my Acer is 3y.o. and replaced a Dell workhorse but never matched up to it so I know what Bev means but they weren't even close to my price range this time either).
I've never owned a HP but maybe this will change me, it has room to upgrade the RAM to 16GB and still has a CD/DVD drive (i still like that feature but it's getting less common with cloud storage etc) and if i'm honest, the extra USB port & battery life on the HP swayed me over the Lenovo one (and the fact that it's RAM was maxed out). I'm picking it up in a few hours and hope that means I'll be back in full (faster!) swing before MOC!

Congrats on the new laptop--enjoy!

IDK exactly which graphics card I have, but otherwise that one is similar to mine. Oh, unlike Laura I do not have a SSD, but DH told me that I can remove the disc reader and put a SSD in its place.

That's what I did. I removed my disc reader, which I'd maybe used twice in the year and a half I owned the computer, moved my existing 1 TB HD into the disc reader's space to hold data, and then put a 512 GB SSD in. I'm so happy I did it! My computer runs much faster, and all the frustrating slowdowns I'd been dealing with disappeared. Even though my 1 TB is 3/4 full, things don't slow down because programs are booting and running off the SSD. I think this is the 1st time I've made it to 3 years of owning a computer without even being tempted to get a new one.

we have a desktop too. but I can't take that with me with I'm on a retreat so I do the laptop. Otherwise I'd LOVE to use my desktop - the screen is twice as large!!

yay! I've always had Toshiba's so the HP will be new for me too. But it seems like people really like them!! And, yes, my goal is to be up and running by Christmas so I'm totally ready for MOC!

@tinkerbell1112 I did the same switch in 2015 from Toshiba to HP and haven’t regretted it for a second, only reason I’m on my 2nd HP laptop is the first was stolen earlier this year.
