Does this exist? (transferring photos from camera to phone)

I used to want to do this when my camera had a compact flash card too and at the time I was debating on buying a hard drive device that was made specifically to backup your photos from your camera. It was a hard drive with a card reader and all it did was download everything on the card to the hard drive. This doesn't help you for the social media posting part though, so that's why I never pulled the trigger to buy one. Sounds like it's time for a new camera that takes SD cards.... you know just so you can have an Eye-Fi card. Lol. Actually I think a lot of the newer cameras have wi-fi built in, right? Don't think that this hasn't crossed my mind! LOL! The new version of my camera both takes SD cards AND has built in wifi... it would solve all my problems! Now to convince my husband that this is a better option than buying the $5.99 USB adapter

It might be worth looking at dropbox on your phone to store the photos...I believe there's a way to back up photos to dropbox then choose a selective sync so they're stored on the cloud rather than the phone.

This might be the space issue problem solver though! If you can get them to the phone, and then upload them all to Dropbox, that would take care of the phone storage issue. I know with my phone, it auto uploads to dropbox, and then I can delete them off my phone, but dropbox won't delete them. That ONLY works on my phone! Anywhere else, it will delete from Dropbox.

But... and now I'm beginning to feel like it's some conspiracy against me... I looked up Canon versions, first, they range in price from $150-769 (!!!) and second, I can't tell that any of them are compatible with my particular camera.

I don't think it's a conspiracy, as much as it's a usefulness thing. They probably don't make many any more because so many of the cameras will do bluetooth or wifi. I know that's a feature I thought was superfluous, but now I'm realizing how awesome it will be for exactly your situation! I don't want to take a laptop on our cruise, and this way I can still upload to the phone. But man! That is super frustrating that it's not available cheaply for you!!!

I probably need to edit my original post. A place to upload my files to in order to get them off of my phone is not my issue, as I have those options already in place... getting the photos to my phone is the issue. That said, I have also heard that, although we will have wifi at all of our hotels, it might not be good enough to upload mass quantities of large files which is why I'm going to experiment with backing up files to another card via the card reader before we go.

Yeah... I know it's not a conspiracy ... it was just beginning to wear on me that all of these inexpensive options existed out there but none of them worked for my exact situation.... I even found an inexpensive multi-card reader for phones that had a CF slot, but it only worked with Android phones! No iPhone option! The iPhone ones only have SD slots! I was so close, so many times!! My little waterproof point and shoot has wifi and I love it! I'm super careful about not opening it until it's fully dry... so the wifi lets me immediately transfer photos off of it without having to open up the card compartment. My big camera is over 10 years old... before wifi was an option. It's still going strong, so I can't justify replacing it (yet ). If I get my desktop before the trip, this may all be a non-issue too. I won't need to be so protective of it if it's not my main computer (plus I'll be able to take it in for repairs... which I hate to do now since it means being computer-less).

That stinks! I know it's hard to justify spending a lot of money when it's something you're looking at for one trip right now, but if you think you would get lots of use out of it, it might be worth investigating some more...or even later. Especially if you don't think you'll be upgrading the camera any time soon. But I hope everything works out for you and you find a solution. I'm glad you're giving it some time to figure out. I'd be like the day before the trip going "oh crap" lol.

I have one and, basically, it is a portable hard drive and router. It doesn't take CF cards but presumably, you could use a cheap card reader that ends at a usb plug. I take ours traveling to do a bunch of things (1) I download photos onto it to free up space on other devices, (2) it serves as a backup battery, (3) it is a file hub -- so it sets up its own bluetooth network that you can hook your phone or other devices up to and those devices can wirelessly access the files on its hard drive. I load movies onto an SD card, plug that into the unit and then we can stream them to connected devices.(4) because it is a router, you can use it to route an ethernet or wifi signal to more than one device (which can save money when traveling if you have to pay individually for wifi).

Anyhow, you could plug a card reader into its USB port on the unit to transfer the photos from your CF card. Then you could access those file on your phone through the unit's blue-tooth. The only downside is that you have to use their software to access the files, which admittedly is a bit clunky although it works.

Because it's connection specific? Or os specific? One of my cords came with an iPhone adapter that slipped on the edge of the micro USB so it would work with both iPhone and Android. Hence the question.

And that's an added bonus with being able to use it to stream to multiple devices!

especially since it sets up its own hub and doesn't require the hotel WiFi!

My camera has wi-fi. I had to download an app and the camera syncs to the app on my iPhone. Depending on the signal, it came take a few minutes or forever.

hey not to be a debbie downer or throw a spanner in your works at all Tracie, but i have a canon 5D (the original not the mark2,3,4 whatever they're up to) and a 7D and they're both CF cards (which i've hated for years, there's nothing compact about them and those pins were just trouble waiting to happen). But after a trip, hmmm, not sure which one now, i had a cheapy multicard reader to plug into my computer to transfer files. I know you mentioned pins bending and stuff but my problem was it was corrupting the CF cards and making them unreadable as soon as they were plugged in and then the camera couldnt even read them (fortunately i didn't lose any photos or possibly only a few i'd taken of just random moments after we got back b/cos i'd copied them to an EHD with the USB cord between the camera itself and the laptop already and this was my 2nd back-up, but this is my preferred transfer method now b/cos i still have 3 cards on my desk that are in a post-it note with 'unreadable' written on them - and they're SanDisk Ultras or Extremes so not crappy cards, now ultimately whether it was the cord or the reader itself, i don't know but it was enough to scare me into changing my method of transferring (i was shooting as smallRAW+Ljpeg as a just incase method anyway b/cos i have had issues with random jpegs transferring funny in the past but the RAW hasn't been an issue but if the whole card is useless, my 'just incase' shooting mode can't save me).

I found this reader corruption is fairly common after googling it and that the more, ummm, 'connect this to that and then to that' steps that you have to use when you can't find a direct way to transfer your precious memories increases the risk of data problems - sorry but happy planning!!

Yeah, one of the reasons I like it is that it does so many useful things. And it's a bit bigger than your typical back-up battery stick but not too big. Seeing Bellbird's post below, you will for sure want to test it out before you go!
