Does this exist? (transferring photos from camera to phone)

We're in the planning stages for a big family trip to Paris and London in November. I would prefer to not bring my laptop like I usually do on trips (it's old, has zero battery life and needs to be babied a bit). My camera is a Canon 5d that uses Compact Flash cards. While on the trip, I would love to find a way to transfer some or all of my photos to my phone. The reasons I want to do this would be 1) so I could upload some to social media throughout the trip and 2) so I could backup the photos to the cloud periodically so I would have them if something were to happen to my camera and/or card during the trip. I usually do this via my laptop on trips, backing up everything each night at the hotel. Any creative ways to do this that I haven't thought of? Most of the card readers I'm finding that will connect to a phone are for SD cards only. If there really aren't any options, then I'll bring my laptop with.

@tkradtke hmmm - I think you have two options:
1. Get a CF to SD adapter and use a eyefi SD card
2. Get a tethering kit for your big camera to your phone
 
Okay... @lmccandless you lead me down the right path!! I found the iPhone SD card reader that Shutterfly sent me and saw that it also has the ability to plug into a USB port... so I'm thinking that I can connect that with my existing CF card reader that plugs into a USB port. All I would need is a USB female to female adapter which I found on Amazon for $5.99 (with good ratings)! For that price it's definitely worth a shot to see if it works. I was just so hung up on finding a specific product for this instead of figuring out a work around. Thanks!

You're going to have such gorgeous photos!!! I'm already excited to see them and your LOs!

And can I say, backing up from the phone is a brilliant idea I hadn't thought about!
 
Is your phone memory big enough? That would be my only concern. It sounds like a superb work around. I have a friend who basically transferred her photos to her iPad using a little dongle adapter. It sounds like the same basic ideas. Let us know how it goes!! :)

That is a concern that I need to look into. Some options I'm considering are 1) seeing if I can upload directly to the shutterfly app or an iCloud album from the card reader for a backup, 2) possibly transferring photos to my phone, uploading them to Shutterfly or iCloud for backup and then deleting from phone to save space or 3) buy an SD card as my backup and see if it's possible to transfer photos from the compact flash to the SD card through the app for the card reader. With these options, I would only have to keep the photos I wanted to post to social media on my phone, so I don't think I would need too much space.

That's the good thing about starting this process early.... I have time to play around a bit and figure it all out. I'll keep you posted as I figure things out!
 
I don't own one, so don't know how adaptable it is, but if your phone memory is not large enough, ( and I doubt that it will be )you can get a device that connect your camera to your computer ( IP address ?) It will transfer any photos you take directly via wifi from your camera to your computer or cloud storage or whatever you set it too.
 
Have you heard of Eye-Fi? I believe they have what you need. It's a card that uses Wi-Fi to transfer images to your computer, tablet, TV, phone and I believe, clouds. http://www.eyefi.com/ I'm honestly not sure if they are in business anymore... I think Toshiba bought them.... I do think the Eye-Fi is better for DSLR cameras.

Yup... but unfortunately they don't make compact flash cards, only SD cards (at least as far as I can tell). I would need the SD card and the adapter to make it fit the compact flash slot. Which could be an option but I have a brand new fancy compact flash card that I love and going the eye-fi route would be over $100, where I'm hoping this solution will be under $10. I would have loved one... but even when they first came out, I could only find SD.

No problem! I'm just really sad because an eye-fi would solve my problems and I've wanted one for YEARS... but I've not found any wifi enabled compact flash cards. I wonder why that is??
 
Tracie... I thought they made an adapter? To make your SD cards work with CF. Is this not the case? When I got my Eye-Fi years ago, it came with it... it'd old and lost now, but it did come with one. @tkradtke

They do... but I'm a little scared of the reviews (broken pins in camera, etc.)... and it's also a bit more of an investment (between the eye-fi card and adapter) than I want to make at the moment since I have a great new card.
 
True. I completely understand not wanting to chance things! I hope you find what you need! A trip to Paris and London sounds wonderful!
 
It might be worth looking at dropbox on your phone to store the photos...I believe there's a way to back up photos to dropbox then choose a selective sync so they're stored on the cloud rather than the phone.
 
I'm glad you seem to have found a solution!! I don't know that much about Canon as I've always had Nikon, but my Nikon D7100 has a wifi adapter that you plug in to the camera and it sends the photos directly to the phone or iPad. It also acts as a remote for the camera and you can see the camera view through the phone before taking the photo. Pretty cool little gadget and it only costs like $45. Wasn't sure if there was such a thing for the Canon or not.

Thanks Meredith! I have a cloud backup... I just can't get them there from my camera! At least not yet... fingers crossed that I can find a way to get them from my compact flash card to my phone so I can sync with my cloud.

Aaarrrggghhhhh!!! That sounds exactly like what I'm looking for and that price is good too! But... and now I'm beginning to feel like it's some conspiracy against me... I looked up Canon versions, first, they range in price from $150-769 (!!!) and second, I can't tell that any of them are compatible with my particular camera. All the while, the Nikon version you mentioned is taunting me in a side ad on Amazon for only $39!
