Back to School shopping | 8.7.17 pad patter

I haven't decided if I'll buy Aspen (17) a new one or not. She's a senior so this is her last year of high school.
Maybe think ahead if you do decide to. My parents bought my brother a backpack last year as a senior, and then this year he had to buy one that would fit his laptop. If your school doesn't have restrictions, maybe that would be a better idea? We spent a lot on DH's Swiss Gear laptop bag, but he's now used it for 4 years (nursing school, and now to work), and it's going strong!

We just got a supply list for the 6th grader, which I think is a joke because we are supposed to have free public school for elementary in Utah.
Usually, the teacher writes "suggested" or "optional" to get around the law...:eyeroll

I'm running low on my blank notebook supply, so I hope the clearance sales are really good this year.
I've seen notebooks at $0.10 and $0.25 this year on sale, and the penny deals mentioned above. What do you see on clearance that makes you wait?

Homeschool Mom here.
We bought glue because it was cheap, and we always need glue! And a new set of thin markers. Because munchkin insisted. That's it for school supplies at our house!
At some point, I'll have to buy him shoes, but winter won't be here for months in the desert! And he prefers pj's to do school in. :happydance2

4-5 years ago I got 100 page notebooks for 3 cents each at Target. I haven't seen them priced close to that for a long time. There was no limit, so I bought 5 cases. Now everything is limited so getting a great deal like I did back then isn't likely.

My husband did this twice before my daughter was born 9 years ago and we still have notebooks...lol!

I did back-to-school clothes shopping online. My daughter is 9 and is worse than me about shopping in an actual store. I prefer to do it online. She mostly needed pants since I bought her some long and short sleeve shirts a size larger ant the end of last school year while they were on clearance.

Supplies - Before we moved, I used to order the school toolbox that had everything she needed. Her new school does not participate in the program. :( My sister was in town, so she and I went to pick up things on the list last month. I also buy extras in case the class needs more things during the year.

I agree on buying better backpacks. I usually make the kids use their backpacks for at least two years, but Megan (11) let hers rub on her bike tire as she rode to school last year. I made her use it the rest of the year, but it's pretty ratty now and has a big hole in the bottom, so she gets a new one. I haven't decided if I'll buy Aspen (17) a new one or not. If she is going to collage she will need one there. You just might want to wait and see. Does she have one now that holds her computer well? How far of a walk to class? Ours did as our school supplied a computer for them (even though the school had a padded type of bag the laptop came in) Anyways with collage you will want to make sure she has one that her laptop will fit in well and safe.

I ordered all our kids LLBean they lasted for Years! Mostly they were sick of them and that is why we replaced. Costco has some at a good price.

you are one lucky lady! My MIL used to take my two older kids back to school shopping. She was never able to take little Megan shopping. Her cancer came back when Megan started kindergarten and she passed away the week before first grade. We sure do miss her.

Aw, so sorry. :grouphug

I'm not sure if any of you ladies care for Lands'End, but for today only, they have their backpacks and lunchboxes on sale for 50% off with free shipping!!

I just came to share that Timmi! Because of this thread, and everyone talking about how great Lands End backpacks are, I ordered my kid one today. I figure he'll use it for our cruise next month.

Too funny!! I don't have experience with their backpacks, but I know it's a good brand!

My mom surprised me by coming over to the house one morning a couple of weeks ago & taking DD supply shopping. DD's birthday is always the first week of school so she tends to get back-to-school things as gifts so she will also have a new backpack & lunchbag from my parents as one of her gifts.

I only care abt the first day of school outfit. #scrapperpriorities :giggle

Luckily, she still mostly lets me buy whatever I want when it comes to her clothes so I showed her a cute plaid dress at Target that I liked & she agreed that she liked it, too. YAAAAAAAAAAAAS.

I buy her a birthday shirt, too, which I usually get from The Children's Place but they have no gurls' birthday tees this year. Boohiss! I'm headed back to Target this week to see if they have any. We might have to settle for a button or sash otherwise. Last year she wore a 'It's My Birthday' shirt and looooooooved all the attention she got from everyone.

I have always enjoyed all the school supplies fresh for the start of the school year. This year my oldest will be starting preschool for the first time. After getting the list, it's not what I expected... Ream of paper, sandwich bags, hand wipes, and a box of tissues. He is only three so I will have many years of school supplies ahead of me.

I still bought sale glue sticks, crayons, watercolors and scissors for us at home. In addition my son picked out a backpack and we got some basics from the office max penny sales which we donated to our local food bank.
