Wondering if anyone also sews? I have outgrown my beginner machine and am looking at upgrading to a machine that can grow with me and last for years.

I am currently looking at Berninas, Janome and Juki. My beginner machine is a Bernette, so I am familiar with the Bernina brand. I have a Juki serger also.

I am mainly sewing with knits and would like to do home decor/curtains and the learn how to quilt someday.

Anyone have any suggestions?? Like I "needed" to add another hobby with all my others!!! :circles:circles:circles
 
I also sew but unfortunately I have no suggestions. I use a beginner machine and am not planning to upgrade as I mostly sew bags and little things.

I would also have a look at Pfaff machines if I was you. Their reputation is extremely good. If I could afford them I'd buy Pfaff.
 
My Nan's Bernina is still going strong, it must be a least 40 years old, if not more!

I have made a few quilts, but never got the hang of dressmaking.
 
For home decor you need a strong machine to get through all those thick layers of decorating fabric and/or trim. I used to sew all the time but rarely do any more.
 
I have always been impressed by people that can sew!! I had to make something in home economics (OMgosh - like in 1975!) I made a shirt - one sleeve was so small I could barely fit my arm through it and the other so big that it just hung! LOL.

I had an expensive Pfaff that turned into a paperweight after moderate use and switched to Bernina. I have never had trouble with my machine, and my mom has a Bernina that is around 30 years old that is still going strong (with various servicing).

I looked at Janomes for a bit but was not overly impressed with their build quality.
 
I used to quilt before scrapbooking and got a Bernina, guessing it's about 20 years old. I probably made 5 or 6 quilts back in the day. Still works like a champ. I only use it to do the occasional pillow sewing or mending anymore but I have never had a problem with it.
 
@amandac :compcoffee :compcoffee Valium!! nearly spat a mouthful of tea all over my laptop Amanda!!!! and only just got this laptop plugged in after letting it dry for a week or so since the last spill!!!:rofl :rofl Knitting is the one I need the Valium for, I started a lot of projects over the years but never finished one of them! I was always dropping a stitch and the tension for woeful, tight one day and sloppy the next! Finally caved in and owned up to the fact that I am not a knitter! :)

I love sewing but haven't done anything for awhile................ while I am taking my sewing machine with me I have had to give away a TON of material to my DIL as I can't take it with me!! :( I have a Brother which I have had for a few years now and have sewn quilts, handbags, pillowcases and other craft type items. While I can make a dress I don't like it. :disagree

My sister can sew ANYTHING!! (and knitter as well!hmph) and recently she upgraded to a new Janome and absolutely loves it! It can virtually do everything my Brother can but she stayed with the Janome brand name as her old machine which she had for some 20 years was a Janome as well.
 
I used a Janome for years when the girls were dancing but rarely use it now. It is still going strong.
 
I used to sew a lot but other interest have taken over. My sewing machine (a Janome - very reliable) has gotten more use sewing onto paper layouts than material but since I now only digiscrap it barely gets used - only mending occasionally.

Would love to have the patience to quilt more.
 
I have a Janome but it's 20 years old and not sure if the new ones are built like the old ones.
 
I have a brother, my last one cost $129 at Wal-Mart and lasted me almost 20 years, so I stuck with just getting another cheap one when I needed an upgrade... However, if I found myself really sewing a ton, I would get a Bernina, because they are AWESOME!!

I'm never done more than the basics with sewing but years ago bought a Janome and it worked great, was easy to use (since I was a total newb at it) and it still works all these yrs later, although it probably needs oiling now b/c I haven't touched it in at least 5 yrs or so.
 
I have a very nice Viking - I bought the floor model which is not something I normally would do but I could test it out in the store and it was such a good deal. It's a great machine.
 
I have a basic Janome for about 20 years and have never had any trouble with it. BUT it isn't good enough to go through thick material like jeans. I have done a couple quilts, bags, sewing on paper layouts, and am in the process of making quilted Alphabet set for my daughter who is expecting a baby.

A Bernina 530 jumped into my car today. I didn't even go try out the Juki. I was uneasy about it to begin with and once I sat down, I just knew! LOL

How exciting that you already have a new machine! I can sew, but I don't really love it so much. I used to quilt, but I never took the time to iron my seems flat, so nothing every laid as flat and nice as I wanted. I rarely finished projects because of that. I did make my son a blanket this weekend though. It was just a couple 2 yard pieces of fleece that he wanted, so I basically sewed around the edges, flipped it right side out and then stitched around the edges again to make it lay flat better. That's about all I ever want to do these days.

I have my Mom's OLD Husqvarna sewing machine that she got from her MIL when they got married. It cast metal and seriously sturdy, so not too many bells and whistles.
 
Thanks for sharing - I was inspired. I cut out and sewed up a simple 3 tier skirt for myself today. I also cut out a blouse. I hope to sew it up tomorrow. Now what is sad is that I bought the material about a year ago when a fabric store near me went out of business. Oh well, at least I am making progress.

p.s. I used my trusty, no computer to break, Kenmore from 30+ years ago.

YAY!!! I am hoping to break out the new machine over the weekend and get familiar with her.
