I have a dental cleaning this morning and dd has one this afternoon. Even though I love the feeling of clean teeth, I'm really not looking forward to going. I had to get 3 crowns and a root canal this summer. I know I won't need all that again, but it still makes me a little apprehensive to go. How about you.... Do you have a love/hate relationship with your dentist too?

how funny, we actually just changed dentist. My boys and daughter have an appointment tomorrow with the new one. I have a different dentist. I love him, but he doesn't take my kid's insurance. I pay cash for him. He goes to a Pain Free Dental camp every year. The rooms have candles, soft music and big cozy crocheted blankets to lay on you during any procedure. Painted nice warm colors and so comfortable to be in. I love love going there.

I miss going to the dentist. We're having something weird going on with our insurance we haven't figured out yet and I haven't gone in a year. Maybe a year and a half now. I have always been faithful about dental checkups twice a year, so it feels wrong. :P

Oh yes, insurance does play a role in which dentist you go to and how often you go. We didn't have dental insurance when I was a kid, so we only went to the dentist when there was a major problem. Hence, the reason I had to get 3 crowns and a bridge. Back then, everyone just got dentures when their teeth failed. I'm glad that dental care has come a long way now a days. And I'm so thankful that we have dental insurance, so my kids can have preventative dental care and braces as needed. I'm also glad that my kids will never have to deal with the dental problems my hubby and I have had.

We switched to our current dentist last year (the whole family) and absolutely love him. His office staff is very friendly and he's so kind and concerned with all of us. Same with our orthodontist. I love that both of them have really gotten to know us and care about us. Once I was shopping in Walmart and our orthodontist recognized me and asked me how my dd (by name) was doing with her cheerleading. I will definitely be taking my youngest to him for braces when she needs them.

When I was a child I HATED going to the dentist and put up a huge fight every time I had an appointment. My mom even bribed me once with a little pearl bracelet (never did get it) if I would behave. Poor old doctor Ripp (no kidding, that was his name) had heart issues and said I could no longer be his patient and transfered me to, get this, Dr. HURTER, a children's dentist. I was still scared and "acting Up". He yelled at me to "knock it off!" I did, but I was still scared.

I love our dentist but hate going. I have sensitive teeth and always get a dry socket with any surgery, so always feel tense when I go, knowing it will be uncomfortable. I am diligent though and go every three months b/c I want to keep my teeth as healthy as possible.

oh boy! I'd be scared of those names too....lol

I am going next Thursday to start the invisalign process. I'm terrified - I gag asily so the dentist and I are not great friends!

I have one more kid to put in braces and then maybe I'll find the courage to do it for myself. If I do do it then I'd love to do invisalign, but not sure if our new insurance would pay for it. Hubby's starting a new job in January, so we'll have a waiting period and the insurance isn't as good as what we have now, but the position has more learning opportunities and is a BIG promotion so he's taking it. I hope we don't regret it.

I'm allergic to whatever is in those numbing shots. They have to use something different. Once they forgot. I am traumatized, and of course hate the dentist. Poor dentists. Everyone hates them.

Now that would be scary... Glad you're ok Lena.

My appointment went great! I'm a little sore from the scraping but love that my teeth are all smooth and squeaky clean now. Heres hoping dds goes well this afternoon. She isnt good at flossing so Im hoping she doesn't have any cavities.

I was just at the dentist yesterday for a crown replacement and a filling. I HATE going to the dentist and am usually terrified the whole time -- all tensed up, freezing, hands shaking. I know this is counter-productive so I constantly have to remind myself to try to relax and breath. Ugh. I also have to remind myself to be nice to the dentist since modern dentistry really is something to be extremely thankful for and it's not his fault that I'm a big ball of anxiety.

I can finally say I have a dentist I love. My husband found him a little after we moved here. Our dentist is very attentive during procedures and will keep a check on your comfort level and let you know what he's doing along the way. That made me much more comfortable. Also, I like that he will make a plan as to how to tackle our dental concerns ahead of time. That way.. we are not hit with a big unexpected bill. If he recommends anything, he always explains why it makes sense.

Topic just up my alley! :D As a Hygienist- I better like going to the Dentist since I work there! :D :D Honestly, I'd have my teeth cleaned every day if I could talk one of the gals into doing it! lol! I'm not a big fan of having work done though- really who is!? BUT our office is awesome- we have free nitrous & tv's that patient's can watch (as well as headphones if they want), Warm neck wraps, paraffin hand wax dips, heated/massage chairs & try really hard to make everyone comfortable (blankets, pillows, etc). We also have a coffee bar in the waiting room & our office manager bakes cookies everyday for patients!

All of us Hygienists do the majority of the anesthetic for the dr's so I feel like we're a little more gentle with pt's regarding that one thing that no one likes (or likes to give really!) We use topical to numb the tissue first & good, strong anesthetic. Most of our patients use nitrous for the restorative procedures & that helps a lot with getting numb :)

While everyone does "hate" us- we really love our job- we have the BEST hours & get to help people be healthier everyday!

Not my thing. I avoid it until my tooth hurts too much to deal usually. Ugh. I have an underbite, and apparently the only thing any of the dentists want to do is break my jaw to fix it. Oh, and braces, which I know I need if I want a perfect smile. Instead, I'm satisfied with my imperfect one, and just get annoyed with the tooth that's way out of place. Sigh.
I had a very traumatic relationship with the dentist as a child, and I've never really recovered. I was tied down on a board to have a cavity filled. Plus, I gag easily, and the numbing stuff always numbs my ears so I can't hear for an hour more or less afterwards. I would like to get braces to fix my smile, but I'm too traumatized by the dentist.

It helps that my dentist is my very favorite person in the whole world... my DH is my dentist :) I know I'm biased, but he is really amazing! He's very good at putting people at ease and is definitely a people person. It's also a huge perk not to have to worry about payment!

@bestcee I'm so sorry - that sounds terrible! No wonder you avoid the dentist!

I am terrified.... usually have to have full anaesthetic for cavity and teeth pulling ,so I save it up so to speak, like 2 wisdom teeth, plus A filling and clean in 1 go . I have bad teeth as a consequence. My dentist is a paediatric dentist LOL enough said...

OMG ... this is me. Ask for the smallest size fitting when they have to do the molds. And try some "mind over matter" relaxing techniques. My dentist tells me to think of happy thoughts and to control the situation mentally - sometimes it works. They never lean me back far either when they put those molds in bc the gag is just out of control. Good luck Celeste!

Oh and yes Kayla. Total love hate thing ... the best part of going is the second you take that paper bib off and start walking out the door, because it's all done!

Your office sounds wonderful...wish i could go there.

My dentist is a very good dentist. She doesn't try to "upsell" us. She did a root canal on me 3 years ago, and told me that 1 year after the root canal, I'd probably need a crown. But, the root canal is still holding solid. However, she is not nice to her staff. On two occasions, she's snipped at my hygienist while I'm in the chair. And, I've seen her do it in the hallway with other staff. It makes me feel kinda bad for going there, but like I said the service is good, and it's conveniently located.

Hate - definitely. the last time I went was only because I had broken a tooth/lost a huge filling.
It's the noise of that drill that gets me more than anything else.
