I'm back with another finish the sentence. This time it's "You can't have a party without..."

For me, it's cake- i dont know if it's an upbringing thing, but the cake or dessert is *the* important thing. One of the first books I bought after having DD (11yrs) was the Australian Women's Weekly Birthday Cake book - it's like a staple in many Aussie cooks bookshelves! I was given a slab of leftover cake from DD's grade 6 farewell after helping to take home and we will be eating leftover cake for about a week by the looks. I always 'over-cater' cake myself as well (or serve too much other food!) but looking back i've never had to say to anyone 'sorry we've run out of cake!' ;)

Yes, the cake (or other dessert) is important... or just food in general. I learned to over cook/over cater as well. My mom always goes way over board. The nice thing though is the leftovers!

Congrats on your DD finishing another year!

I totally agree with cake/dessert! Otherwise it's just dinner. :-)

We went to my MIL's last year for Christmas and at the end of dinner, there was no dessert. Everyone was perplexed and didn't know what to do... it was Christmas dinner, there HAD to be dessert! I have no clue what happened... she hadn't asked any of us to bring it (I had been assigned a casserole), she just forgot all about it.

We'll cook big meals on occasion here, but rarely make sweets... so it's a big deal when we do. No celebration can be without them!

I think Food and Drink would be my answer, and cake falls into that. Though my family is odd, lol! We have "parties" but they are more like appetizer/cocktail parties. It's all about the apps, beverages, and mingling. My favorite part are the apps - I love to make them, try new ones, and then share with others. :) We are not big dessert people, but would be happy with cookies... and there must be dessert. I agree with Tracie, no dessert is a bit strange, lol!

FOOD! always, lots and lots, and people to eat it! I adore a housefull of people eating my food. It makes me smile, the best kind of party. Filled with laughter and eating!
did I mention FOOD? lol

I agree - you can't have a party without FOOD! Lots and lots of food. I grew up with a mom and grandma who cooked for an army so we always had plenty of food. If you went home hungry it was your own fault because Mom and Grandma always cooked tons so there was lots of yummy things to choose from and piles of leftovers. I've learned to scale back a bit from what they did, but I always have plenty for everyone.

Dessert is an important part of the party food too. It doesn't have to be cake, but it does have to be something yummy. I rarely make dessert for dinner, so dessert is a must for parties. We usually do cookies, peanut butter bars, brownies, pies or cheese cakes for dessert. We've also done rootbeer floats, homemade ice cream, and sundae bars for dessert. It's always fun to see what people will think up for dessert and it's always YUMMY IN MY TUMMY! lol

......laughter and good conversation. I love some good food and splurging on dessert but mostly its the people who make it a good (or not so good) time for me. I don't spend a lot of time with friends and we have a small family, so hubs and I spend a lot of time with each other and not others, so as much as I enjoy my quiet home life, I really appreciate and enjoy getting together with family/friends.

...a theme. I love themes & coordinating things. I jump at any chance to arrange some kind of theme. My 8yr old doesn't want parties anymore, but I still make goodie bags for the class. 8 was Pokémon & 7 was a spy 007 theme. I just love that stuff. I'm turning 40 in April, I can't wait to see what I come up with.

People.
We have good food, and occasionally dessert with just our family. But my favorite parties are the ones with the social aspect. The unplanned, just chat amongst yourself times.

I am with you Jenn... food and drink!

Hmmm... I would say it's not a party without decorations! If there aren't decorations, it's just hanging out with a bunch of people somewhere.
LOL ok so true - my phrase is now 'you can't have a party without cake AND decorations!'

Good friends and food. Not lots of friends either... GOOD friends. :)

Oh and 80s dance music. And adult beverages. Lol!
