Do you do anything special for today? When I was a child in Canada, we always had an assembly program celebrating our veterans. The poem 'In Flanders Fields' was recited, and I was so excited the year I got to be that student who recited it! We also wore poppies.
In Boston area, and Utah, we went to a parade a couple of times.
Here, we have the day off school, but no plans. I think I'll talk to munchkin about what the day means.
 
My kids and I have the day off from work/school. There is a parade downtown but we don't usually go. We will go put flowers on my grandpa's grave. He fought in WWII and the Korean War. My daughter is at a friend's house so my son and I will probably go on a date to lunch.

Good morning everyone. Today is Veterans Day in the US. It's a day to celebrate all the men and women who have or are serving for our country and I'd like to include those serving in law enforcement too. Thank you to everyone who is serving or has served AND their families for putting it all on the line so I can have the freedoms I have and live in a safe place. You have sacrificed so much for me. Probably more than I'll ever know, but I'm so glad that you have.

I have family members who are serving in the military and law enforcement right now. And I had an uncle who passed away while serving before I was born. I will be forever in their debt and thankful for their service.

Do you have anyone who has served or is serving in your family? Say thanks to a Veteran or law enforcement officer today! :heartslub
 
We don't have school off today, but I'm putting up the flag. I also hope to see some military folks at the store when I go out so I can thank them. We have an air force base here in town, so it's common to see vets out and about. It's also fun that the jets bank over our neighborhood. Some people complain about the noise, but I call it the "sound of freedom". I don't mind if i have to wait a couple of seconds to continue my conversation. I just smile and remember I live in the land of the free!
 
It is a day to be thankful for all who serve our country. I'm saying a prayer for a young police officer who was almost killed yesterday by a machete wielding guy at a local store parking lot yesterday. He was stabbed multiple times but thankfully is going to survive. He's only been on the job a few yrs and I'm sure this will be very traumatic for him. My mind boggles at all the craziness going on out there.

oh that is scary Rae.

I worry about my nephew every day. He works as a guard in a county jail, so it's not as bad as some, but still a worry. He was a marine before becoming a law enforcement officer.

Yes, thank you to all who are serving or who have in the past. The kids are off today, they had a ceremony at the HS yesterday morning.

I have family who have served, family who currently serve and a son who plans to enlist in about 1.5 years. :beat

that is so scary. thankful to hear he will survive & hope his recovery is speedy. our police and firefighters and EMTs are also heroes who serve, here and around the world. :beat

Any situation, any job, any endeavor can be dangerous, but I think a little extra respect and pride should go out to those that put themselves in a career/job that has a higher incidence of violence. You should be very proud of him.
 
My husband is a chaplain in the Army. He's been to Iraq twice and is currently in Korea. So, yes, this day holds meaning to us and our family. I didn't come from a military family, though, so I grew up not really paying attention to Veteran's Day. Now I am so much more aware of the sacrifices that are made for our freedom everyday.
 
I don't do much although it is on my mind all day. I'll post on FB and often write a note to the family members who served. My DH is a veteran so I'll mention it to him. I used to wear the poppy but haven't seen them as much lately. It's just a day for me to remember. I like including the police and other public service people. Great idea.
 
I don't have any family in active duty anymore. But, I do appreciate everything the veterans have done, and are doing for our freedom.

I'll just take a moment to thank @AnneofAlamo for her service.

I wish the best to any other veterans at TLP & those with family serving now. Thank you and bless you.
 
I can't remember if there is something like this in Argentina or Brazil, but I always try to celebrate at least in a small way by remembvering everyone who have served in wars...which many of my family have done, and LOTS of friends of mine were or still are Military....

there is something most of you do not see...but there are lots of Pollys you don't seem to see "working" or "playing" but they work so so very hard behind the scenes.....

I'm the wife of a veteran, the daughter of a veteran, the granddaughter of a veteran, the niece of a veteran and I live in the town that proudly claims the Home of the Infantry and Armor (Ft. Benning).

I love Veteran's and appreciate their sacrifice. Thank you for all who have or are currently serving this country.
 
My daughter's school has a huge Veterans' Day program every year. The different grades sing a couple of songs, they have a photo slideshow with veterans somehow related to the students, and there are a couple of speeches from veterans and the school administration.

Her class made flag teeshirts to wear for the program and do worksheets, coloring books, etc. about veterans and the American military for 2 or 3 weeks beforehand.
 
We have a parade here in town and the schools here are out, but unfortunately the school where I teach was not, so I didn't get to attend. We did some special things in class and talked about it most of the day. My son is Army Reserve, so I made sure he got a special thank you.
 
There was a parade and a ceremony today in our county, but I didn't attend. We went before when Olivia was singing with her school's chorus, and it's very moving.

I spent the day with family (daughter, son, sis-in-law, niece and great-niece).

I posted this on Facebook last year, and shared again this year:

All the things I've done today . . . worked, played around on the internet, read, ate, chatted with my son, etc. . . . I enjoyed because there are men and women in service to our country to allow me the freedom to do so. My family has a rich history of military service, and I've actually made a few layouts about it. From my grandmother's brothers, to my grandfather and his brothers, my husband, and my own brother who continues to serve in the Army . . . and more I'm sure I'm overlooking . . . I'm so grateful.

My grandmother's brother Man who was in the Navy, perished on the USS Sims that sank in the Coral Sea near Australia after the ship came into conflict with the Japanese.

My grandfather and his brothers. My grandfather went into the Navy, and the others went into the Coast Guard and the Army. Barney was the only one who didn't make it home from WWII. I can't imagine having four boys in the military at one time, all during war time. All are deceased now except for my Great Uncle Jesse, who is 95.

Remembrance Day in Canada is much the same as you Remember it, @bestcee. We had an assembly. It seems universal that you will hear, "In Flander's Fields." Also, a French Immersion class will sing the Celine Dion song, "Une Colombe" ("The Dove"), and "Why Wear a Poppy?". I found it hillarious that at our school, about half the teachers were even wearing the same outfits as last year. Thankfully, the band has improved by leaps and bounds. This year, we ended up staying in a hotel in downtown Ottawa on Remembrance Day. This was what Parliament Hill looked like. Amazing. My fellow Canadians at the Lilypad, it's something everyone should come and see:
