I have a lot of boys...and they make the weirdest noises.
We have a saying.
small spaces...
that means the noise you are making is perfect for outside or in the shower...but not in the mini van.
and they stop doing the noise.
from gum snapping(forgive me I do it too)
The holding the breath and talking is the newest irritation to mom's brain.

Is there a sound that just gets on your one last nerve? Tell me! tee hee

I cringe every time my dd (16) pops her fingers and toes. She starts with one and has to go through all twenty before she stops. It makes every joint in my body hurt when I hear her do that. We have a lot of arthritis in the family on both sides, so I don't want her to increase her risk for that.

I hear every last noise in my vehicle. And I've traded a few in because I couldn't stand it any longer!! I splurged and bought a "better" vehicle a few years ago, thinking it would be better - ha! Not so much! Shortly after I bought it there was a recall on the sunroof and ever since then it makes noise. It's been back and forth to the dealership several times, but they can't hear it (nor can hubs!) LOL! He tells me I ought to go to work for Audi and be their quality control person because I hear (and complain about) every little noise!! :-)

My husband tells me the same thing. I have good hearing and his is not so great because of years of shooting shotguns without proper ear protection. I'm constantly telling all three of my boys (hubby and 2 kids) to TURN IT DOWN! My oldest is a hummer/singer. He is constantly making noise and he doesn't even realize he's doing it. I'll tell him to stop, and within a minute he'll start up again. Oh boy. Lol.

Cracking of the knuckles makes me want to whack the person cracking. I just cringe though.

"that means the noise you are making is perfect for outside or in the shower" LOL We used almost the same line with one son (only about 9 but that's boys!) but it was related to an activity that is really not appropriate in the family room. My then husband said "I" had to talk to him!

Noises drive me crazy, especially repetitive ones.

Dogs barking incessantly. Loud chewers (gum or food). Nose sniffling. Loud music from cars or houses but I can only hear thumping.

And yes, my son is a master at humming, talking, tapping, banging, etc. I'm kind, though, when I ask him if he will please stop . . . and he usually stops completely or at least for more than 5 minutes.

fans - the portable ones. I'm okay with them for an hour or so, but then the sound grates on my nerves. Overhead fans don't bother me the same way. Also, unexplained noises. Like our fridge makes this sound like a mouse? And it startles me every time.

Chewing, sniffing are my worst.
I hate two competing noise sources, like the tv and someone else singing or watching something different. It freaks me out big time. I am going to blame it on being an only child.

Oh boy... maybe you all can help me?! I struggle with this everyday! Everyday! Gah!

At work, it's not a big office, but the only person who sits next to me, hums. If she isn't humming, she is cracking gum. It drives me absolutely insane/bonkers. :banghead I don't want to be mean, and I'm not a confronting person, especially about personal things... so I've bit my tongue. I do try to ignore it, and sometimes it works. She is also a chatterbox... and talks, giggles with EVERYONE on the phone. I need a wall!!!! Occasionally, I do have a bad habit of doing something that annoys her when she does it, and I'm at the boiling point. I'm mean, I know. I can't help it. It might not be as occasional as I am thinking though. Gah!!! At least this little post is a vent. I also vent by googling random phrases - coworkers who hum make me crazy memes. :giggle

As for my family... nothing else really bothers me...an occasional hum. Most times, I start by ignoring. If it does get past the ignoring stage, then I just try to ask the kids nicely to stop, or nudge them. My Dh, Peter... it's not noise... it's his crazy, bobbing leg. Constant bouncing! He seems to bounce the whole room, lol! I usually just ask him to stop or tap is leg.

Forks scraping against teeth. WHY do people do that when they eat?!!? And anything that is metal scraping on metal...I get actual shivers from it!

DH does that - i feel your pain!

both my kids do this too - someone told me it's like a left brain right brain thing that is part of how they think and helps them take in new info (and helps them be smart). Even if it's not true, i cling to that!!!

for me, these days, it's the sound of local birds seeing their reflection in our windows and then deciding to attack the window, repeatedly, beaks, claws, everything in a flurry, until they are distracted by something/someone else
(it's been ongoing but we found the baby bird they are protecting 'the kids have named it 'fluffy' so we are being more understanding but man, they aren't home most of the week to hear the house shake)

I feel your pain. The nicest lady ever used to sit in front of me (I was fortunate enough to move to an office all to myself a few months ago!) and sings with her ear buds in - so she's a bit loud and a whole lot off key!! :-)

I can't stand chewing/smacking sounds. Drives me nuts. I also really don't like any repetitive noises, like balls bouncing or like a ball hitting a glove over and over and over or pen clicking. Ahhhhh! I've wanted to take kids' pens at school and snap them in half lol.

when i send my kids outside after too much screen time and they use the trampoline or play basketball, i wonder if the neighbours all start groaning #suburbia

Loud kind of white noise sounds drive me crazy. At our trailer, we have a dehumidifier that is awesome for getting the moisture out of the air after the winter cold and dampness but the loud hissing sound it makes drives me insane. I cannot be in there when it is running. So for the first few weeks of the season when we start going out there, we only turn it on when we leave to go into town and then shut it off when we return. My hubs doesn't understand b/c he just ignores it and doesn't even think about it. I start getting a headache and it's all I can think about.

At home, its my hubs drumming his fingers/nails against the side of the end table repetitively and quickly. I have ask him to stop.

It drives me ballistic when people talk when they're supposed to be silent like at the movies, during a presentation, at church. I can't focus on anything but what they are saying, and it makes me want to throttle them.
