It's school picture day (again) at my kids school. And I have to sigh. I tend to buy one set each year because, well... just because. They are sometimes OK, but always too expensive. I sincerely wish that I had been the one to come up with this brilliant idea. Herd kids in and out all day. Sit them in front of a blue screen and click the camera button quickly, regardless of the actual appearance of said child. Then charge their parents the equivalent of a semester in college for a 5x7 and two 3x5 photos. Spectacular! #anothermissedopportunity (she is not mine, but I so wish she was ) So, I have a funny school picture story about my husband. When he was about 10 years old (remember this was the 70's people), he went to picture day in a white t-shirt (with blue trim, of course) and little velour letters that spelled his name that had been ironed on by his mom. BRAD On the way to school, somehow he got in a tussle with someone and one of the letters fell off. Yes... his smiling face was directly over the word BRA on his shirt. #classic Any good stories?
oh I bought them for about 3 years, and then said, no more...so I told the kids to make the funniest faces and that mom said it was okay...that way for sure we wouldn't buy them. Oh they were bad, crossed eyes, over done lip pouts and one daughter glared at the photographer, my oldest who has cowlicks that would make a guinea pig jealous did not comb his hair.... We laughed when they came to "proof" ! no worries we didn't buy. Then came Christmas, Mother's day and more crafts with photos of my funny faced kids on them....the photographer gave free tiny sticker sheets to all the teachers for crafts...bhahha my Christmas tree has a glaring angel, a crossed eyed snow globe kid and we just roll at this.
I always get them. No matter how bad they are. I just purchase the smallest package available, which is usually less than $10. I feel like it's a rite of passage to document horrible hair and clothing choices. And when Olivia graduated, it made for a fabulous photo set up!
Are you kidding?! The cheapest package this year at DD'so school was $30. Ugh. But what you did looked adorable!
Cheryl @gonewiththewind - how do you get a photo package for $10? We can't get a single 8x10 for that price here. Anyway, I always get them, too. It's who they are at that point in time. We always get the least expensive package, which ends up being about $40ish. I love looking back at them, year after year. I have a photo mat where I can put their Senior photo, with small photos of the other grades circling it. I can't wait to get them framed after they're done with school But now I have a Senior and the least expensive package for our needs to send to family (1-8x10, 2-5x7, 4-3x4, 8 wallets) is a whopping $250, plus and extra $30 to remove blemishes. They have sent out discounts, but that's if you spend $300+. We just don't have that kind of money, but what are our choices? It's go to JC Penney for a fraction of the cost (about $100 for the sitting fee and the shots), but then I'd have to retouch each one before printing. Then there's the cost of printing, and the time that goes into all of it. Yikes! He graduates in June and I still haven't purchased them. Sigh.
I think it's a 4x6 or a 5x7 and then a couple of wallets? It's a SMALL package. But I have the photo nonetheless. They always have had an inexpensive option in elementary school. Now when it came time for Senior portraits, that was another matter entirely, especially since I purchased digital rights. But if I remember correctly, we still got Olivia's freshman/sophomore/junior photo packages for less than $20.
I just checked Daniel's package for this year, and it doesn't have the price on it, but it was a 5x7, 4 wallets and 8 minis.
Anne, this is why I love you! This year we had a good story. Brody's 2nd grade, Jamie's in K. I had their gorgeous outfits from Pumpkin Patch set out. Brody outright refused. He wanted to wear a neon green shirt with a skull with grey shorts with a red stripe. I got the eye twitch. We both cried over this fight. We compromised, but that skull is prominent in the pic with his uncombed hair. After seeing that, Jamie asserted his right to wear his favorite peach striped shirt. So I now have 2 school pics with surfer beach boys in front of lush autumnal backgrounds. I'm bribing them next year. Oh, and here it's $34 for a 5x7 & 4 wallets. Nothing cheaper.
Oh, see... these I would HAVE to buy Here, too... I'm totes jealous about a $10-15 package. Our cheapest is like $40 and I have four kids! That's why I only buy them once (yes, our school takes Fall and Spring photos... again if I had only thought of this). AND... for the 1st time this year, we have to pay $10 if we want a class 5x7. These have always been free in the past. RACKET. One photo. 25 people pay for it. Sigh. *sticking my tongue out at you*
When Kennedy was 3, we had professional pics and the photographer ended up taking his shoes off doing a bunch of poses. The floor must have been grimy. When we got the huge print on a board backing, we realized there was dirt on the bottom of his foot. Like the whole foot bottom was noticeably brown/dirty. I always bought the school pics. Most of them turned out "ok" and I cringed and paid. But I was a single mom and couldn't afford my daughter's senior pics, so My grandma took her to an expensive photo place that had a "deal" which ended up being like a couple of photos for $100 and that one went into the yearbook. I ended up taking the rest of them (for the majority of friends and family). I did the same for my little sister.
ha! I always tell my kids to try to make a silly face for their pictures! More often than not, they get scolded, but I would love to get a silly faced picture from the school! i don't usually buy them. Too expensive. Our class picture is $10, and then to add others, it's usually around $30. I will occasionally buy them. One year, Colin was in the forest, and Shayne was on a beachy seaside. LOL! We couldn't stop cracking up! Of course, I can't fund them. Off too look again on FB!
I always buy the smallest thing...usually I can get a sheet of 4 3x5 plus the class photo and I think it's $11 (Canadian....right now that's like, what $8? US lol). I always take a set of photos for my kids birthdays (used to get them done at Sears until prices went up and quality went down) and then just print those for our family.
I have to make my own pictures because my kids are homeschoolers! If I had sent them to school but still went on to study photography as I have, I might have started out buying school pictures but then stopped around 2010. I took my oldest daughter (now 14) to a mall photographer for a few years, the last of which included her baby sister, but then never again!
I've got nothing to contribute, but I'm dying at your post @jenevang! The #anothermissedopportunity, that pic of the little girl and the story of your husband. #daymade
We're homeschoolers here too, but we meet with a community once a week. I volunteered to bring my camera and take "class" and individual photos and put together a year book. #whatwasithinking #imnotreallyanoverachiever lol
I'd love to be able to tell my kids to make funny faces. That's a riot! But even from kindergarten, these are the photos that go into the school yearbook (yes, they make yearbooks for the elementary schools too - something I couldn't understand because we didn't create them until 7th when I was their age). I buy the disc every year and then print what I need from cheaper places Plus I get the digital versions. I always make a small album for my kids with this picture as their opening page. the best story of MINE was when I was in third grade my sister was born ON CLASS PICTURE DAY. Needless to say, I looked like a mess while everyone else looked perfectly 1980s pretty. LOL
That is too funny! I have one of Brody that looks like he's floating in outer space. They cut him off under the knee, but there were still stars where his legs should be. That was the worst picture ever.
Cool! In my homeschool group's early days (when it was only about 20 families), some of us talked about making a yearbook, but we never did. I think the largest homeschool group in my area does a yearbook, but it's such a huge group and we only participate in a few activities so we wouldn't know most of the people or events in the book. I print all my scrapbook pages in a a book every year so that serves as our yearbook.
