When we lived in California, recycling was a big thing because they give you $$$ for glass, cans and bottles.
Here in New Mexico, it is not worth the time and energy to recycle.
until....................
:woot
we just got $50 for giving up an OLD fridge from our electric company!
They come and haul it away and give us money!

I feel so green (in a happy for the earth way and cash is green too)

bhaahh
are you a big GREEN recycle person or family?

that's awesome anne.

i know what you mean ... in CA everything was recycled. the recycle can in SJ was huge, much bigger than the reg garbage can. we would have to purchase special bag stickers if you had more garbage than what would fit in the reg garbage can!!! but it was good ... that recycle can took everything ... scrap paper, junk mail, newspaper, fabric/cloth, old small appliances, small bit of junk metal ... along with all the usual. when i moved to NY i was shocked at how little they accept for recycling. and some people in my neighborhood rarely put out their recycle cans. we can return bottles/cans for cash back or just throw them in the recycle can for pick up.

i try to do my part ... we even compost here!

We would love to be green. We have no where to store recycle bins, tho. :( Our garage isn't attached, so if we put the bins outside we get animals & bugs. Someday we'll be in a better house & then we can recycle!

I DO recycle at school, tho! :)

oh yes! we had a compost too! and chickens! lol, they ate everything! lol...
When I first saw our garbage can for actual garbage, it was maybe 20 gallons, I cried. But with the paper and plastic huge ones, we were able to do it...amazed us!

We recycle because there is separate pickup for recyclable materials. We also compost because we have separate "green" garbage pickup and "black" (waste) pickup. But the only thing we get money for is the bottles we take in to the bottle depot (milk, juice boxes, pop tins, etc). Our county is green in general, and each household was given a green bin and a black bin for garbage pickup.

Trash removal is pretty expensive here in my town, but recycling is free. So we recycle everything that is allowed!

I was never big into recycling (too lazy) but these past few yrs I have really embraced it. I recycle pop cans/bottles at a local depot, I have a recycling bin for the garbage pickup, I bring old electronics to the recycling depot and I recycle old clothes/household items by donating to charities. It took a bit to get into the habit of doing it but now it's second nature.

We recycle most of what we can. I'm not good about recycling paper (like school papers), though. We also have started composting this year, which has been interesting. My kids love tumbling the composter every couple of days.

Our community is enrolled to give us online green points for recycling, so we earn coupons and gift cards. My DH is installing rain barrels this week.... I'd say I'm fairly "green"

Oh, and we try to but local and organic whenever possible. That's important, too.

I'm in CA so yes I recycle everything I can...don't get any $$$ for it though, the trash pick up just takes is away when you use the recycle bin they provide. That's ok though, I'd rather do that then just keep filling more and more trash dumps...

We would like to go 'Green' here and being that we live in 'The Natural State' you'd think they would have more recycling going on. We tried it and was told that all our garbage needed to be in one container that they provide us. We were told that some towns/cities are moving in that direction but not in our area.

I was amazed how not green the US (or at least this small town in Utah where I am) seemed to be when I first came. They just handed out plastic bags at the grocery store like they were free! And they were!! Back home in Hong Kong (not the greenest city on earth either, mind you) we had to pay a fee to get plastic bags at the store.

I'm not very green since I just wasn't brought up that way, but when we lived in Korea (where DH's from) I saw how it could be done. Everything had to be recycled there (like you have to separate the tiniest bit of metal from plastic from glass etc etc). My MIL would store all degradable (food) trash in a plastic bag in the fridge until it was time to throw it all out.

Oh my! I can't imagine that part!

We are pretty green. We were both raised in California, so quite used to recycle and composting. When we first moved to Iowa there was only trash collection and yard waste. Now they have a big receptacle for recycle too. The program has been improving over the last few years and most people are on board in the neighborhood too. Stores often incentivize for using reusable grocery bags now, so more people are using them.

We recycle as much as we can...they have recycling here for a lot of items, and we even stopped using paper/plastic disposable cups for the most part. I take my own grocery bags to the store when I do our weekly shopping. I really like reusit dot com for all the stuff they have that's earth friendly. My goal is to find a replacement for Ziploc bags...I have found a few things that will work for us and just need to get them ordered and here!

Me neither... I'm just so used to throwing it into the trash or having a blade in the sink to do the work. When I was doing dishes there I would leave fruit peel etc in the sink and she would go and pick it up. Oops.

Our city does pick up here, alternating weeks for paper then plastics/glass. We also have compost pick up, that's fairly new.

I do the recycling, but haven't done compost in a while, it's tedious and I'm lazy.

After glancing at most of the responses here I'm embarrassed to say we recycle nothing ...

We recycle...curb side we have paper, glass, cardboard, cans, plastics collected, we have a compost. We collect rain water to run our house inside and out and lets not forget the solar power system we use. We are fairly green in our house.
