I have a little girl that comes to my tumbling class i teach. Her name is "Tigerlily" no joke. I thought her mom was kidding. But nope. And she's an adorable little girl. Just was really weird to me. And I see lots of kids with unique names. But this was the most unique. And there really isn't a nickname for her. So it's pretty hard when I'm calling kids up and I'm like...... Sophie, Jack, Bella, Max, and then Tigerlily.... It's just too many syllables. Hahahahahaha

I picked really boring names for my girls, lol, but I love them so much! I used to work at an indoor playground and we had to make name tags and got all kinds of different names (and spellings!). The ones that stick out were Pepsi and a kid named Razor, last name Sharp. I know there are more, but I can't think right now!

Well working in healthcare you see lots of different names... here are a few:

Rocky Waters
Sonny Forest
Butterfly Fields (yep...)
Raymond Raymond

And the list goes on...

My sister was almost Stormy Gale, but my parents went with Kylene Marie instead. She hated it, but I've always loved it. I am Amber Dawn Nd have red hair and brown eyes. The thing I heard all my life (until moving to Germany): did they name you Amber because of your hair? The answer is no, I was a bald baby. :)

My MIL is a NICU nurse and she could make your eyes roll with some of the names she has heard in her 25 years.

Then my Aunt who is a hairdresser had a client who's last name was Benz and when they had a little girl they named her Mercedes.

Growing up as one of many many many Amys, I didn't want my kids to have popular names. But I didn't want them to be made fun of either (MIL wanted to name one of my sons BUG) so I have a Kyra, Kirby, and Kyler. Unfortunately for Kirby...it is now more common to see it as a girls name than boys (sorry son, you were named after the baseball player Kirby Puckett). We live in a multi cultural area and the names are so interesting...Kirby's second grade classroom had a Prince, Princess, Giftee, and Oblivion!

Amy! My dad is Kyler! He's gone most of his life being called Tyler - ha!

Here in New Zealand we have some tough rules about kids names and its not just first and middle names either... if those two and their family name end up saying something rude you don't get allowed it... some even with "shortenings"...

My girls both have one unique name each... and the other has a unique spelling...

my first girl is Anya Marree and while Anya/Anja is common in european countries here I have only met one other Anya... And English people always say it wrong making it come out as Enya instead of using a long A sound...

number 2 is Dannielle Geyla - EVERYONE spells D's name wrong and if meeting her for the first time tend to pronounce it DanYell rather than Danni - Elle ... and pronouncing it incorrectly bugs me! And Geyla is Welsh and a very good friends name... and I loved it... When D was born Geyla's hubby opened the announcement email and hollered for Geyla to come look... not two minutes later I got a phone call with a very happy lady on the other end of the phone...

D's besties are Shavaughn and Elise (named after a Cure I think it is song... me I always think Lotus!)

I went to school many moons ago with a girl named Blanin (said Blawnin) and her sister Sinead her Mum and Dad were Irish neither names were common here then or even now... I don't think I have ever met another Blanin...

Oh and then there is my cousins daughter Nevaeh - rewrite the letters backwards which is what I have to do all the time to make sure its spelt correctly...

Rayden Atreyu.

Think Mortal Combat and The Never-Ending Story.

I belong to a local alternative moms group - I hear lots of names that I think are weird. Then again some people think us calling Mason Masey or Mas is weird too. lol We get lots of funny looks at calling a pretty obvious boy Masey.
:giggle

ummm my surname is Cockle (as in the shellfish) and one of my dear friends suggested very helpfully I am sure, that I name my first born daughter Ophelia ................ and THAT is all I have to say on that matter!

Also that self same friend suggested when my second daughter was born I call her Meninga ...... *sigh*

My friend has named her kids Diesel and Denim.
I've also known a Porter House (that was just mean).

same friend suggested i name my son Hurricane Hilleary. i just told her to lay off the drugs. :giggle

Amanda, I DO like Ophelia as a character, but I'm not so sure I would go so far as to name my child that. Doesn't Ophelia drown? Not a good ending. I'm thinking maybe steering clear of that name might have been a good decision on your part.

oh...people on Brazil can be very creative and came up with unique and horrible names at the same time.....I would need special help from the braziliam girls from the team to explain that to you...calling Ana Paula, Valeria and Amanda!!!
oi...
you dun luff me anymore ????
***cries****

I cant believe some of the names you girls have mentioned here
One of my very best friends, we have a 40 years friendship, she was pregnant at 18 and had a boy... the "kid" is now 30 something....and still gets people to call him Andre....
my [completely crazy but I love her] friend called him....

Adonis Narciso

lucky the boy was/is extremely good looking....
not even the father wasn't able to persuade her to change her mind....and we are talking about late 70s here.....

In Brazil there are very, very few laws as to what you can call your child...they make a point about spelling...
for example, a friend of mine had her boy (now 29) and wanted to call him Michael because of Michael Jackson....
they were told they could only do it if the spelled it Maicol which is the sound the name has in Portuguese.

There are people who are completely gone and , believe you me, the government will allow a name like "Potato Bag" or Pepino which means cucumber....but what people do the most is combine names that none in their right minds would....(yes we are a country of crazy but lovely people!!!)
like for example: a girl 's grandma is Marcela, the aunt is Neide, then the girl will be called Marcineide, which is difficult to understand what is wrong with it unless you speak or know the sound of Portuguese...
My compadres (Sarita's God Parents) called their first born son Crisnandes, because of one friend called Cristiano & another surname Fernandes.....
anyway...yes, crazy things are happening more now with the internet giving people access to all idiotic ideas.....then they wonder why the kid is being bullied :(

I grew up in a lovely area for names (sarcasm there folks). It wasn't until high school when I moved to where I am now when I had to not correct teachers on how to say my name at the start of each year. Generally I got "Puh-tree-see-uh" uh, no, sorry, just plain ol' Patricia. lol
