If you color eggs, how do you it? Are you a fan of the basic Paas dye or do you get crafty with your eggs? We're doing a couple of different things this year...the Paas (because that's what DH likes LOL), the silk tie method and some plastic eggs with washi tape. I think the silk ties are fun because of the cool patterns. I gave my 5 yo some white plastic eggs and some of my washi tape after seeing this wreath at TT&J. She's had a blast with it.
i have never {not as a child, and not with my child} done easter eggs.. i want to.. but i dont even know where to start i would be really disappointed if the one and only time we do them they come out super lame haha
Dude. You must! It's super easy and fun. If you can boil an egg, you can do it. They are just so pretty!! Get a white crayon and doodle something on the egg before you dye it. Then you'll have the coolest eggs ever.
Oh La...you should totally do easter eggs...just coloring them all the pretty colors and not doing anything creative is fun enough but I bet once you got a few done you'd rock at the easter egg creativity. We always dye eggs. We get fairly creative, the wax crayon, tie dying, doing multi colors, DD loves to put stickers on hers. We always end up with an eclectic bunch of eggs and it's so much fun. There are tons of cool kits out there, seems like every year we try something different, but we always get the basic Paas kit cuz we know it works.
I really would like to do some glitter eggs, but I don't think I have the patience for it this year. We usually do the regular old coloring. I don't know what it is, but there is just something about those bright-colored eggs that I just totally love.
I totally fail as a mom and have never done them. LOL! I remember doing them when I was little and it was fine..but I don't remember it being super awesome...lol Like La, I don't even know where to start or anything...
We do the simple dyes and the kids like to put stickers and crayon on them. Have to admit, they end up looking very unique! But we have lots of fun. When I was young, we would each get to make 1 or 2 pysanky at my Grandma's house (wax burns on the fingers!). And BK (before kids), my younger sister and I got back into Pysanky and bought a bunch of supplies. The dyes are useless now and need to be replaced, but the wax + styluses are still good. The kids are probably old enough to give this a try. I don't have a very steady hand though. Here's the best of my eggs. I think they still need to be varnished, so they might not look like this anymore! We blow out the egg with a large gauge needle - very slow and difficult work and lots of eggs end up cracking right at the end. We compost the broken shells.
So start simple. Buy an egg dying kit at the store. Hardboil some eggs. And go to town. You can try drawing on the eggs before you dye them - we've found that cheap white candles work way better than crayons. But just get creative with dipping in multiple colors, holding the egg half way in one color then half way in the other, etc. Make sure your table is totally covered because it gets messy. But just DO it! Because it's FUN!!
The mess totally stresses me out too Angie! But I suck it up for a day and let the kids have fun. I've never bought the Paas kit, I just use the dye recipe on the back of the food coloring box. We like to draw with a white crayon or wrap rubber bands around them. I've pinned a few cool ideas for dyeing eggs but we'll probably just do the same old!
Laura, I love the silk tye method link you posted! I'm fascinated and can't wait to try it! I have to share a favorite Easter egg story. I had an uncle named Seymour. He had mental retardation which as a to me as a kid made him seem super cool because he like to do all the same things I did. We would color, play with Colorforms, and practice counting. I really loved him very much. One of Seymour's favorite things was coloring Easter eggs. He passed away when I was about 7 and my brother was 5. That Easter we were sad Seymour wasn't there coloring eggs with us. My mom came up with the idea that we would color an egg for Seymore and bury it for God to give it to him. We did that and I think it made us kids feel better. The next year for Easter we were of course coloring eggs again and a pretty cool thing happened. We dipped the egg in one color (you know the plain old fashioned Paas kit with the single color tablets) and out it came with a beautiful rainbow of colors on it. We were all marveling over how it happened and my little brother said, " that was Seymour thanking us for the egg last year." We still don't know how the egg came out with all those beautiful colors but it was pretty special. Oh, did I mention that I was raised Jewish! Lol! We still colored eggs though.
We usually just dye them and then use a little kit to decorate them. This year we also decorated plastic ones so we could leave them out on the table. last year we made snorkelers and dinosaurs
We usually buy different kits like tie dye, glitter etc. We have not even had time to do them yet. sigh...I also must help the Easter bunny fill plastic eggs too. I am so behind.
I"m embarrased to say that I've never dyed eggs with my kids. I bought a kit about four years ago and it's still in the cupboard. Sigh. Mom fail.
Heather those are amazing!! Laura, I've been wanting to try the silk tie method since I saw it several years ago.. I'm doing a dinner on Sunday and my friend got super excited about dying eggs, so we bought some kits at Target. LOL! (Note, this is a dinner for my friends. We are all seniors in college!) I remember dying eggs as a kid every year at church. We would do the white crayon thing or stripes, but nothing super fancy.
Just as a heads up for those wanting to try the silk tie method and because I wouldn't have thought about it...I've read to not eat the eggs you dye this way because the dye wouldn't be food grade. But as a display piece..they're gorgeous for sure! May be a good method for blown eggs..then you could keep them around.
